Revisit - 2006 - Season

Henderson selected for
All-Star Sports Week

The Alabama High School All-Star Sports Week will be held in Huntsville and Andalusia’s Anna Henderson was among players selected to play during the weeks events.

The rosters and coaches for both the north and south teams for those sports were released Tuesday by the Alabama High School Athletic Association.  Rosters for the week’s four other events — football, girls and boys basketball and volleyball — were previously released in April.

All the athletes selected to participate in the All-Star Sports Week were juniors this past year.  The All-Star Sports Week is set for July 9-13 in Huntsville.

Local softball athletes earning invitations were Dothan’s Jo McAllister, Ariton’s Lexi Phillips, Andalusia’s Anna Henderson and Enterprise’s Sara Hilton. McAllister was selected as a pitcher, while Phillips and Henderson were chosen as infielders and Hilton as a catcher.  All will play for the south team in the July 11 game at Metro Kiwanis Sportsplex.

Dogs - Eagles fall to Trinity

Undefeated Trinity Presbyterian visited Andalusia yesterday to face both 1A #5 Pleasant Home and 4A #9 Andalusia in a double header softball game.  The Wildcats took on the Eagles in the initial game and battled to a 5-1 victory.  Pleasant Home took on the upper class challenge to run the distance.

The Lady Bulldogs have played seven games in seven days and could be showing the signs of a grueling schedule.  The undefeated Cats kept the Dogs scoreless and finished the nightcap 8-0.  Andalusia had 4 hits in the shutout game and dropped to 15-8 on the season.

Lady Bulldogs continue to win....

Although the boys didn't fair as well, the Lady Bulldogs (15-7) continue to hold on to their #8 ranking as they defeated Greenville 6-1.  Morgen Battey recorded 13 K's in the 3 hit win improving her record to 9-1.

Battey was 2/4 at the plate along with Sophomore Jessica Centner.  Senior Kali Mathews had only one hit on the day, but it was productive driving in two runs.

Opp defeated Andalusia 8-2 in Opp Tuesday night behind the three hit pitching performance of Zach Spann and Rhett Barnes. The error-plagued defense of the Bobcats did the job without a single error as Opp spotted Andy two runs and then erupted for six in the fifth and two more in the sixth inning to clinch the win.

Spann pitched the first four innings and pitched well, limiting the visitors to two hits, but the Dogs led 2-0 through four and one-half innings behind the pitching of Matt Mellown and Matthew Jernigan. The Dogs committed but one miscue in the field but it was costly. A two-out grounder off the bat of Barnes was misplayed and Opp went on the score six runs.

Jeb McDaniel and Mark Linton had two hits apiece and the former knocked in three runs and Opp claimed its fourth win in eight games. Barnes got the win, pitching three innings in relief, giving up just one hit while fanning three.

Money to Enterprise

three Enterprise Players are pictured with Andalusia / Opp Baseball team

The Andalusia Bulldogs and Opp Bobcats baseball programs spent their Sunday afternoon playing baseball and raising money for the victims of last Thursday's storm that ripped apart a community and captivated a nation.  Approximately $4,500 was raised from the 2 PM game that produced a winner, but the greater outcome was the feeling received from the jester.  "You really don't know how to help, but just doing something feels good" a player was overheard stating.  Professionals agree that the best possible outcome is to get the students and community back to a normal routine as fast as possible.

The food sold was donated by HB Paulk Co. The umpires donated their time and Opp Rec Department worked overtime to get the field ready.  A big salute to the umpires, players, coaches, fans, friends and families that attended Sunday's game...  GAME SUMMARY.
