LADY BULLDOGS WIN AREA

Blanche Alverson scored 10 points to lead Andalusia (14-9) over T.R. Miller (12-9) for the 4A Area 2 Championship.  Although trailing 11-10 at halftime the Bulldogs rallied to outscore the Lady Tigers 14-5 in the third quarter to pull away with the title, 33-22

The Victory over T.R. Miller was the third straight over the Lady Tigers for Andalusia - however the Bulldogs can not enjoy this victory for long.  They must now focus on another difficult task, because while they may have won on one front, they didn't receive any gifts on another front.

Winning the Championship allows the Bulldogs to host the Sub-Region contest against the runner-up of Area 1 - Thursday at 7:00 PM, but the Lady Dogs must now face #5 Escambia County (25-6).  Thomasville upset the area champ 48-47 in the final ofthe  4A Area 1 contest.  Thomasville will host TR Miller.

If the Bulldogs defeat Escambia County they would move on to the Regional Tournament and face the winner of Opp vs Dadeville.

Hillcrest topples Bulldogs

Andalusia couldnšt hold on to a slim one-point halftime lead over Hillcrest on Tuesday, falling behind in the third quarter before Bulldog turnovers led to a big 67-50 Jaguar victory.  Andalusia just hasnšt been the same since making it to the finals of the Dothan Eagle/Dothan Progress Holiday Prep Classic at the beginning of the season. At that point, the Bulldogs were 8-2 and had ascended to the No. 1 ranking in 4A, according to the Alabama Sports Writers Association.

Andalusia rode that momentum into area play, winning their first two games, but then another loss to Enterprise was followed by a loss to current area No. 1 T.R. Miller.   Now, with tournament seedings just around the corner, the loss to Hillcrest could be damaging. Just like in the previous meeting between these two schools, Hillcrest stormed out to a 10-2 lead behind two three-pointers from Prentice Riley.  Andalusia mounted a mid quarter comeback, using a jumper by Leslie James and a leaning layup by Brandon Sims to cut into the lead 6-12. Another three, this time by the Jaguaršs Curtis Richardson, pushed the lead to 15-7, but Andalusia managed to keep the margin to single digits behind a three-point play by Jeremy Ferrell.

Andalusiašs patience on offense began to pay off in the second period. Nico Johnson scored the first points of the quarter and a technical foul on Hillcrest allowed the Bulldogs to climb within five points, 14-19.  James sunk a midrange jumper a minute later and Sims cut through the lane to add two more on Andalusiašs next possession. After forcing a Hillcrest turnover, Sims would later give Andalusia their first lead of the night with a three-point play that gave the Bulldogs a 23-21 advantage.
The two teams traded baskets down the stretch, but a Riley bucket with only four seconds left until the break cut the Andy lead to only one at 29-28.  Andalusia started hot in the third, with James making good on a three-point play and Ferrell and Sims combining to push the lead to 36-30. However, numerous Andy turnovers kept Hillcrest hanging around and the Jaguars were able to take the lead back with a three from Clarence Jackson with 2:31 left in the period. Once Andalusia fell behind, Hillcrest kept applying pressure, turning turnovers into points to take a 49-42 lead into the final period.
Andalusia only managed eight points in the fourth, as Hillcrest used a 13-0 run to take a commanding 64-48 lead with only 1:07 left. The Bulldogs would manage just two points down the stretch as Hillcrest pushed ahead for a 67-50 victory.

Cleveland Knight led Hillcrest to the win with 16 points, while Riley added 13. James and Sims each scored 13 for the Bulldogs. With the loss, Andalusia drops to 14-5 overall and 3-2 in area play. They will host T.R. Miller this Friday with the B-Team beginning the nightšs action at 4:30 p.m. The girls, then boys will follow after.

LADY BULLDOGS

The Andalusia Lady Bulldogs may only have a 9-9 overall record, but the team has excelled where it counts, moving to 5-0 in their area after Tuesdayšs 53-25 stomping of Hillcrest.  The Lady Bulldogs have faced a difficult out of conference schedule this season, with six of their losses coming to 6A Dothan, 6A Enterprise, 4A No. 7 ranked Opp, and 2A No.1 ranked Samson. In each of those losses, the Lady Bulldogs were in the game until the final quarter as they watched their opponent squeak out a victory.

However, wins havenšt been a problem in their area.  Andalusia opened area play with a huge win over W.S. Neal before picking up a nine-point win over Hillcrest. After beating T.R. Miller 45-32, the Lady Bulldogs began the cycle again, blowing away W.S. Neal 62-11 and cruising by Hillcrest for their most recent victory.  Though Andalusia went on to earn a 28-point victory, Hillcrest put up a strong showing in the first quarter, staying within three of the Lady Bulldogs to trail 7-10.  Andalusia got most of their scoring in the first frame from Anjelica White, who had six points to keep her team on top.
In the second quarter, Blanche Alverson got in on the act, opening up the quarter with a jumper from inside the paint and then adding four straight points a minute later to put Andalusia on top 18-7. Whitešs eighth point of the game increased the margin to 22-7 and the Lady Bulldogs went into the break with a 24-11 advantage.

Andalusia opened up the third period with a 9-0 run, which included four more points from White. A three from Cantess Rudolph finally got Hillcrest on the board with 4:25 left in the quarter, but another jumper by Alverson kick started an 8-0 Andy run that pushed the lead to 43-15.  Hillcrest managed to cut into the lead in the fourth, getting to within 21 with 5:20 remaining in the game. But Andalusia bounced back, with three points from Jamie Holmes igniting a 6-0 Andy run that put the game officially out of reach.  White led Andalusia with 18 points, while Alverson notched 10 and Holmes added eight. Kaylen Thomas had eight for Hillcrest in the loss.  Andalusia will not play tonight, but will return to action on Friday when they host T.R. Miller. The B-Team will kick off the action at 4:30 p.m., with the girls, then boys following after.

Andalusia 49, Opp 32

OPP -- Nico Johnson recorded 16 points for Andalusia (13-5). Brandon Sims and Leslie James scored 10 each.

Andalusia 62,
W.S. Neal 35

ANDALUSIA -- Nico Johnson scored a game-high 31 points and Jeremy Ferrell added 10 as Andalusia (12-5) rebounded from Tuesday's loss to T.R. Miller. The Bulldogs, who fell from first to ninth in this week's 4A rankings, will play at Opp today.

BULLDOGS FALL AGAIN

Brandon Andrews scored 12 for TR Miller, who gain a leg up on Andalusia in area play.  The Tigers upset the #1 ranked Bulldogs, 45-32 - who will likely fall from the top spot in the new rankings released tomorrow by the Alabama Sportswriters.  Nico Johnson had 19 rebounds and 13 points in the lose as the Bulldogs fall to 11-5 on the season.

Andalusia 62 - Opp 31

After a close first three quarters, the Bulldogs exploded for a 26-7 fourth quarter run and disposed of the Bobcats 62-31 in Andalusia. The Dogs led 23-18 at the half but took control early in the third period by dominating the boards with a 43-14 advantage for the game.  Nico Johnson led the Dogs with 23 points and 18 rebounds. Opp travels to Daleville January 16 and returns to the Opp gym for a Friday date with the Bulldogs again. Opp is 0-2 in the area. Daleville is 1-1.

Lady B
ulldogs drop to Cats

Opp edged Andalusia 55-53 this past Friday night in one of the Bobcats'
most satisfying wins of the season. The Opp win was the first over Andy in several years. Ironically, it was the Dogs that broke on top early, taking a 19-4 first quarter advantage. After falling behind 25-8, Opp would go on a 28-8 run of its own and take control. This run covered all of the second quarter and much of the third.  Opp led 49-41 with 3:47 to play in the game and appeared home free.  Andalusia went to the full court press and hurt the Cats. Opp missed seven free throws late while Andy canned ten for ten. A Kiara Henderson turn around jumper in the lane with six seconds to go clinched it for Opp. A Blanche Alverson three pointer at the buzzer fell awry and the Cats earned its thirteenth win in fifteen tries. Opp will take a 1-1 area record to Daleville January 16, then play host to Andalusia on Friday.

Andalusia back on track

Both Andalusia basketball teams have started out region play 2-0 after each squad was able to claim a victory over Hillcrest on Tuesday night.  The boys held on for a 53-46 win, while the girls marched to a 43-31 victory.

The Andalusia boys were playing in their seventh straight away game in the past week and a half, after making it to the finals of the Holiday Prep Classic and then traveling to take on Dothan, W.S. Neal, and Hillcrest. That stretch didn’t have any effect on the Bulldogs, who went 5-2 over the period, putting an exclamation point on the road trip with a come from behind victory over the defending 4A State Champion Jaguars.

Andalusia trailed 37-30 at the half, but the combination of Nico Johnson and Jeremy Ferrell proved to be too much for Hillcrest.  Johnson finished with another monster game, coming away with 25 points, 16 rebounds, five steals, and four blocks while Ferrell, who had missed the previous six games, finished with 11 points.  Justin Holder had 12 for Hillcrest in the loss.

The No.1 ranked Bulldogs are now 9-3 on the year and will face off against Enterprise for the third time this season. So far, Enterprise holds a 2-0 advantage after defeating Andalusia in the championship game of both the Andalusia Christmas Tournament and the Holiday Prep Classic.

LADY BULLDOGS

The Andalusia Lady Bulldogs got another win, jumping on Hillcrest early and in the end holding on for a 43-31 victory. The Lady Bulldogs were up 10-4 after the first quarter, but Hillcrest fired back to pull within 16-18 going into the break.
Andalusia started out the third with another scoring run and managed to push the lead  up to 11, 28-17, going into the final frame. That cushion proved to be all they would need for the victory as they scored 15 more points in the fourth to capture their sixth win of the season.

Blanche Alverson led the Lady Bulldogs to the win, finishing with 19 points, 12 rebounds, and seven blocks. Anjelicia White had 11 points, four assists, and four steals, and Chantavia Lawrence added six points.  Just like the boys, the girls will look for another win when they host the Wildcats

The night was not a total success for the Bulldogs whose B-Team lost 50-35 to Hillcrest.

Games against the Enterprise Wildcats begin at 4:30 with the JV followed by the lady Bulldogs and the #1 Varsity boys.

Andalusia defeats Neal

Nico Johnson's 27 points and 12 rebounds sparked Andalusia to an area win over winless WS Neal.  The 0-14 Eagles have yet to find their way into the win column and drop 44-69 to the #1 ranked Bulldogs.  Andalusia travels to Hillcrest-Evergreen on Tuesday moving to 9-3 on the season and 1-0 in Class 4A area 2.

Andalusia Lady Bulldogs fall twice in Dothan

Holmes County 38, Andalusia 37: Jenna Griffin put back a missed shot at the buzzer to give Holmes County the win. Brianna Belcher and Priscilla Isaacs led Holmes County with 10 points each.  Blanche Iverson led Andalusia with 18 points.

Despite leading 19-15 at halftime, the Lady Bulldogs couldn't battle through an 0-12 scoring slump in the third period as the host Dothan Lady Tigers defeated Andalusia 43-33.  The 10-1 Tigers were lead by Tequila Martin's 20 points while Blanche Alverson led the Bulldogs with 16.  Andalusia moves forward in the losers' bracket to face Holmes County at 4:30.

Andalusia drops first game

The Andalusia Bulldogs lost their first game of the season falling to 5-1.  The Bulldogs lost to the Enterprise Wildcats in the Championship game of the 40th Andalusia Invitational.  Enterprise won their fourth straight Invitational as Michael Lee led the 11-1 Wildcats with 25 points.  Nico Johnson scored 14 with 18 rebounds for the Bulldogs.   Enterprise 74, Andalusia 65.

Championship Night RECAP
(Jon Menard)

Even with 44 points from sophomore standout Nico Johnson, the Andalusia Bulldogs fell to Enterprise 74-65 Saturday night in the championship game of the 40th Annual Andalusia Invitational Basketball Tournament. Enterprise took control early, cruising to a 10-4 lead within the first three minutes of the quarter.  Wildcat forward Michael Lee accounted for six of those early points and it seemed like Enterprise might run away with another big tournament victory. However, the Bulldogs kept feeding Johnson inside, and even with three players guarding him, the sophomore was able to bang in eight points to keep the Enterprise lead to six, 20-14, after one. Seven early second quarter points from Johnson keyed a 10-3 Andy run, and the Bulldog ended the quarter with eight more as the Enterprise lead decreased to 36-33 heading into the break.  Brad Peeden and Lee combined for eight early third quarter points, but Enterprise didnšt have an answer for Johnson, who continually pounded away on the boards and muscled into the lane for 11 points in the quarter. But a complete team effort for Enterprise, which saw six different players score, increased the Wildcat lead to 57-45.  Four more points from Johnson to begin the fourth quarter put Andalusia back in the game, but Enterprise answered right back with a three-point play by Patrick Morris. Johnson answered back with three more, but four straight points from Scott increased the lead back to double figures at 65-55.

Both teamšs would continue to trade baskets down the stretch, but Andalusia couldnšt overcome the guard play of the Wildcats and fell 74-65. Lee finished with 25 points to lead Enterprise to their fourth consecutive championship in the Andalusia Christmas Tournament.  The 44 points from Johnson helped the sophomore lock up MVP honors for the tournament. He also finished with 18 rebounds and six blocked shots in the game.

Andalusia made the championship game with their 54-46 victory over Opp on
Friday night.   Andalusia fell behind 9-4 in that game, before rebounding with 14 second quarter points, eight of which came from Jeremy Ferrell, to cut the Opp lead to two heading into halftime.

The Bulldogs took back the lead after the third quarter, and closed out the
game with an 11-4 run to win by nine. Ferrell and Johnson each had 16 points to lead Andalusia to the victory.

Andalusia advances over Straughn

The Andalusia Bulldogs rested the first string and major players most of the second half as the Bulldogs cruised to an easy 52-25 opening round victory.  The Bulldogs are hosting the first tournament of the Holiday season in Covington County and came out firing.  The Straughn Tigers could never find any rhythm during the game and didn't score their first points until the 2nd quarter.  Sophomore Nico Johnson had 4 boards 5 assist and 14 points in less than 3 quarters including a crowd pleasing dunk, then he watched from the bench as varsity and junior varsity team members playing with the varsity for the tournament.  Junior Varsity Sophomore Jeremy Ball had 9 points in the Bulldog's Victory.  Junior Trent Driver  lead the Tigers but mostly in the second half with 12 points.

Andalusia sweeps 'Rala

Both the Florala and Red Level Varsity boys will try to get back in the win column Friday night, but one will not make it - as they prepare to meet head-to-head in Red Level.  The Wildcats are coming off a loss to 4A Andalusia last night as Nico Johnson controlled the boards and the game in the Andalusia 62-45 victory.  Michael Carson kept the Wildcats close in the first half scoring 10 points before fouling out in the 3rd quarter.  Once Carson went out it was all Bulldogs.  Zouchrain Vickers, although scoreless in the first half - stepped up play when Carson went to the bench and finished the night with 14 points.  Jeremy Ferrell added 14 to go with Johnson's 24 to lead the Bulldogs.

The Andalusia Lady Bulldogs dominated the 1A Lady Cats and also posted 62 points for the evening.  Andalusia held Florala to 25 points and about the same in turnovers.

The evening started with the Andalusia Junior Varsity setting the tone and defeating Florala 49-32.  Florala's Dixon and Andalusia's Ball both scored 19 to lead their teams.

The Varsity Boys prepare for their Christmas tournament that begins Thursday night - shooting 27 of 46 from the floor and 8 of 16 from the line.  The Wildcats were 14-43 and 3 of 12 from the three point arc.  Florala had 21 turnovers to Andalusia's 17.

Pleasant Home Girls defeat Andalusia - Boys flip

The Andalusia Bulldogs hit the hardwood for the first game of their season as sophomore Nico Johnson was hitting baskets and not quarterbacks.  The starting linebacker poured in 19 points and showed no rust pulling down 13 rebounds and blocking 8 shots as the Bulldogs defeated 1A Pleasant Home 61-41.  Jeremy Ferrell added 21 points and 13 rebounds.

The Lady Eagles from Pleasant Home changed the boys trend between the varsity and B-Team boys falling to Andalusia 44-51.  The 1A area 3 team defeated the Bulldogs 56-49.
