Bulldogs fall to Tigers

Thomasville could have ended any hope the Bulldogs held for the playoffs with their 21-6 victory over Andalusia last Friday.  The Tigers improved to 3-1 in 4A region 1 behind 4-0 Jackson.  Andalusia fell to 1-3 in the region and could miss the playoffs for the first time in four years  (Andalusia Bulldogs - Playoff Record).

Andalusia will have to win the remainder of their games to move to 4-3 in the region.  It isn't out of the realm of possibilities with Clarke County (2-4; 2-2), Hillcrest (2-4; 1-3), before UMS-Wright (4-2; 3-1).

The Bulldogs end the season against the Opp Bobcats  who improved to 4-0 in 4A region 2 with their win over Ashford.

The Bulldogs played a close game against Thomasville, but three plays could have cost them the game.  Andalusia took the lead on a 31-yard field goal from senior Gillis Jones to with 5:17 in the first, but a 68-yard touchdown pass by the Tigers put Thomasville ahead to stay as the second quarter started.

Jones added another field goal to pull within one point (7-6) with almost 3 minutes remaining in the first half, but another long pass put the Tigers up by 8 points as time expired.

The Bulldogs defense had several turnovers from Thomasville in the second half, but Andalusia couldn't capitalize on their fortune.  Andalusia's senior QB, Brent Shriver, played with a separated shoulder and it hampered the Bulldogs from throwing the ball.

Thomasville put the game away late in the fourth when Mitchell Cowan ran a 35-yard TD with less than 5 minutes remaining.

The Bulldogs face Clarke County for Homecoming Friday Night.

Middle School Champs

After sweeping through Straughn and Opp the Andalusia Middle School football team has been crowned the 2008 South Alabama Middle School Conference Champs.
The teams started this new conference this year with Andalusia, Straughn, and Opp participating.

Andalusia host #10 Thomasville

The Bulldogs return home for the game of their lives, battling nemesis Thomasville in 4A region 1.  Thomasville kept the Bulldogs from reaching Birmingham two years ago when Andalusia lost 42-26.

Andalusia has key injuries that could hamper their chances, but the Bulldogs do have enough to win the game.  Both quarterbacks are tentative with shoulder injuries, but could be ready by the end of the week.

The Bulldogs have lost to some difficult teams in the first half of play, including region leader Jackson, 5A Greenville (currently in second in region 3), and Straughn, who is 5-0.

The Bulldogs control their own destiny and still have an outside shot at making the playoffs.  Friday's game against Thomasville is critical with winnable games over Clarke County and Hillcrest.  If Andalusia slips in one of those games they will have to beat UMS-Wright in week 9 to secure a playoff spot.  Wright is currently 4-1 with a lone loss to 6A #7 McGill-Toolen.

In Thomasville the Bulldogs will face a team with 2 losses, but still has enough support to be ranked #10 in 4A by the Alabama Sportswriters.  One of only four 2 loss teams through the seven polls to be ranked.

Thomasville's losses are to region leader UMS Wright (21-14) and to 1A power Sweet Water (30-14) to start the season.  The Tigers have won three straight including their non-region contest over 3A Sumter County (2-3) in York, Alabama.

Jackson 53, Andalusia 20

The Aggies remained undefeated moving to 4-0 for the season and 3-0 in 4A region 1 as the Bulldogs were handily defeated 53-20.  Andalusia falls to 1-2 in region play and 1-3 overall.  The Bulldogs still have an outside chance to make the playoffs, but have yet to face the heart of the region.

Bulldogs pull it together.

If you walked in at halftime you might have though you were at a baseball game with the Bulldogs leading 2-0, but Andalusia poured it on the in the second half to  pick up Coach Brain Seymore's first win as the head coach of Andalusia.

All County kicker Gillis Jones put the Bulldogs up 5-0 with just under 8 minutes to play in the third when the senior connected from 40 yards out.

The Bulldogs defense provided some intense play and hard hits creating several turnovers in the second half and the offense capitalized on every opportunity.  "We finally played like we were capable of playing," head football coach Brian Seymore stated after the game.

Andalusia picked up their first region win and prepare for 4A region 1 leader Jackson next week after a dominate defensive performance from the Bulldogs.  "Our defense really dominated from beginning to end and I really fell that was the key in the game."

The Bulldogs have improved each game and the defense has continued to allow fewer points since their opening loss to Straughn.  The Tigers scored 50 in that first loss, but the defense reduced that in the second game to 20.  Last night the defense shutout the Eagles and will need a solid performance next week when they face Jackson.

Andalusia drops heartbreaker

Nico Johnson's interception with less than 2 minutes seemed to seal the deal for Andalusia leading 15-14, but BC Rain held the Bulldogs and forced a punt that led to the game winning 20-15 touchdown.

Andalusia will return home to host their first game for the season and hope the friendly confines will result in the Bulldogs first win of the season.

WS Neal is 1-1 for the year and lost all five starting offensive linemen from the 2007 season.  The Eagles do return their quarterback and top receiver on offense, but the skill could be defense with 6'2, 295 lb DT Jamar Travis.

Dogs fall to Tigers

Andalusia went into Straughn to open the 2008 season and the Tigers were waiting with their best team in years.  Andalusia shut down the Tigers opening drive and had a chance to take a quick lead with a fourth down attempt, but the pass was over thrown and the Tigers started with great field possession and took advantage.  After a 25-7 lead, Straughn went on to a 50-26 win.

Almost here

Is 2008 the year the Bulldogs have been waiting for? After two successful back-to-back seasons of playoff riches the Andalusia faithful are exited about the return of Brian Seymore and with him the hopes that a senior laden team of playoff experienced talent could push the 'dogs over the top and into Birmingham.

What new talent roams the sidelines?   Do the Bulldogs have the size to content in 4A as the official roster has only two players that weigh over Nico Johnson's 235 - senior Chris Kelly at 255 and sophomore Lex Bradley at 250?

And while every recruiter in the country may be aware of Nico Johnson, is there a player that will step up and be noticed during a game and get recruited themselves?  It will be an excellent opportunity for every play at Andalusia as well as the Bulldog's opponents.

Based on their performance during the spring - the Bulldogs could go 4-6 this season, but Seymore has a talent rich senior squad that could have as many as four players going on to play college ball
