Andalusia finishes second

The Andalusia Bulldogs went into the second round tied for first with Boaz in the 4A AHSAA State Golf Tournament looking for their fourth title in four years, but when the final groups finished Boaz pulled out an upset.  The Trinity boys placed third in the tournament, shooting a 657. Boaz was at 639 and Andalusia was seven back at 646.

"We didn't know much about Boaz before the tournament, but they played well and they deserved to win," Trinity coach Jim Tuley said.  In fact, first-year head coach Eric Whaley took a Boaz golf team with no seniors to win the event - shooting a plus 60 on the Grand National course in Opelika.

Andalusia's David Mathews and Boaz's Mark Hudgins (junior) shot plus 8 for a 152 and the tournament lead for medalist honors.  Each player shot 76 on both days of the two day event.

The Bulldogs shot consistent scores over the two day event and added to their impressive sheets as a Golf powerhouse.

Bulldogs return from Mobile after shooting 323
(Jonathan Menard - Andalusia star)

The Andalusia golf team returned from the Azalea City Invitational in Mobile with an 11th place finish after combining to shoot a 323 on Monday.

The event was originally scheduled to last from Sunday to Monday, but was knocked down to a single day after weather played havok with the course on Sunday. Still, Andalusia put up a solid performance led by rounds of 77 by David Mathews and Jordan Maynor. Alex Short finished with a score of 82, while Gillis Jones wrapped up the day with an 87.

Auburn High School won the event, with Spain Park coming in second and UMS-Wright finishing in third.

Could be another great year for the Andalusia High School Golf Team.  Last year's team won the 4A Championship with a total team score of 639 and 2nd Place UMS-Wright finished at 643.  David Mathews, who shot +4 during last year's two day tournament (78, 76), returns with Zach Portemont and Jordan Maynor.  Mathews and Portemont finished 3,4 individually.

The Bulldogs play April 9 in Enterprise on the Tartan Pines Golf Course and in Columbus, GA April 13-14.  Andalusia will host the Sectional Tournament on April 40 with this year's Championship held in Opelika on the Grand National May 14-15.
