Barnes signs
JUCO Scholarship
Opp
Bobcat Rhett Barnes signed a baseball scholarship to play with
Central Alabama Community College in Alexander City. The
Trojans recently hired Wynn Fletcher as Athletic Director and
Head Baseball Coach. Fletcher arrived from Lipscomb
College in Tennessee. Central has approximately 1200
students and participated in the 2001 JUCO World Series.
Barnes was selected
and played for the South team in the East-West All-Star Classic
sponsored by Alabama Lions International and hosted at Samford
University. Barnes played shortstop and pitched for the
Opp Bobcats.

Barnes & Hall Selected to
East-West Championship Weekend
Rhett Barnes and Cody Hall were two
baseballers selected to represent the South in the East-West
Championship Weekend slated for June 1st and 2nd at Samford
University in Birmingham. These Bobcats were among five
wiregrass players picked and are members of a 17 member South
team. Hall and Barnes survived four cuts/eliminations dating
back to Enterprise three weeks ago. Barnes will attend as a
member of the team and Hall is an alternate. Both played very
well during the three week selection process.
The South will face an all-star
team from Central Alabama June 1st at 7 pm. Should they win,
they would play June 2nd at 7 pm against either the Birmingham
Metro team or North Alabama all-stars. A loss on Friday would
mean they would play at 4 pm on Saturday.
The only other wiregrass selectees
were three members of the Charles Henderson team. All the other
"stars" except for two members from Leroy, were represented by
6-A schools. Leroy was the 2-A state champ.

Playoffs
4A Bracket
Opp ready for State
Opp 7 Daleville 5
Opp clinched the area three
runner-up position in the playoffs with a 7-5 win Tuesday. Opp's only lead
came in the bottom of the sixth inning when they scored three runs to
overtake the upstart War Hawks.
The War Hawks had taken a 5-4 lead in the top of the fourth after leading
4-1 at one point. Riley Dunn and Cody Hall had five of Opp's six hits.
Dunn had a single, double and triple and Hall had two doubles and three
rbi's. Rhett Barnes pitched four innings in relief of Hall and allowed no
runs while picking up his fourth win on the hill.
Opp concludes the regular
season Saturday with a trip to Montgomery to play Trinity.
Bobcats drop area
championship
The error bug bit the Bobcats hard Friday and it cost them the area
championship. Five costly defensive blunders was the difference as
Ashford played without a single mistake and defeated Opp, 6-5 at
Merchant's Field.
Both teams had nine hits offensively.
Billy Womack went the distance for the Jackets while Barnes and
Spann split time for the Cats. Mark Linton, Klint Short and Barnes
led Opp with two hits apiece. Short had three rbi's. With two out in
their last at bat, the Cats got a single out of Linton. Joe Kyser
walked and then Klint Short tripled to send both Opp baserunners
home. Short would not score however as the last Opp hitter grounded
out to shortstop to end the threat.
Opp can secure the runner-up position in the area with a win at home
Tuesday. Daleville is is the opponent. Saturday Opp concludes its
regular season with a trip to Montgomery to play Trinity.
Bobcats "pounce"
Opp 10 Greenville 2
Opp defeated Greenville 10-2 Saturday and played one of its better
all around games. The defense was solid as the visiting Bobcats
committed no errors. The team had fourteen hits and got four-hit
pitching from Rhett Barnes and Cody Hall.
Pitching....defense....hitting, when you do well in each area, your
chances of winning are good.
After falling behind 1-0 in the first, Barnes hit a bases loaded
double and the Cats never looked back. Cody Hall led the way
offensively with three hits. Barnes allowed two hits and both runs
were scored on him. Hall relieved him in the sixth and got the save,
his first of the season.
Opp 11 Luverne 9
It was not easy but the Bobcats scored two runs in the top of the
eighth inning and Cody Hall retired the Tigers in order in the
bottom half to claim the double header sweep in Greenville Saturday.
The Tigers scored five times in the second inning and took the early
lead. Opp got five in the third and another in the fourth to take
the lead for good at 6-5.
Luverne would not cave in. They got two runs in their last at bat
and forced the extra inning of play. Hall got the win in
relief after recording a save in the opener with Greenville. Riley
Dunn had a solo homer for the Cats.
With the win, the Cats are now 8-6 and were scheduled to play
Florala today and Daleville Tuesday.
Bobcats 8 - Bulldogs 2
Opp defeated Andalusia 8-2 in Opp Tuesday night behind
the three hit pitching performance of Zach Spann and Rhett Barnes. The
error-plagued defense of the Bobcats did the job without a single error as
Opp spotted Andy two runs and then erupted for six in the fifth and two
more in the sixth inning to clinch the win.
Spann pitched the first four innings and pitched well,
limiting the visitors to two hits, but the Dogs led 2-0 through four and
one-half innings behind the pitching of Matt Mellown and Matthew Jernigan.
The Dogs committed but one miscue in the field but it was costly. A
two-out grounder off the bat of Barnes was misplayed and Opp went on the
score six runs.
Jeb McDaniel and Mark Linton had two hits apiece and the
former knocked in three runs and Opp claimed its fourth win in eight
games. Barnes got the win, pitching three innings in relief, giving up
just one hit while fanning three.
Opp entertains Straughn Friday and travels to Troy
Saturday with a double-dip scheduled for 11 am.
Opp
falls to Ashford
Ashford scored seven runs in the first two innings and held off Opp late
to post an area win, 8-6. Zach Spann started the game on the mound for Opp
but struggled and gave way in the second to Rhett Barnes. Barnes pitched
well and held the Jackets scoreless until an unearned run was scored in
the bottom of the sixth.
Opp got two runs back in the second inning and added one run in the third,
fourth, fifth and sixth innings but could not push across any in the
seventh. Ashford reliever Logan Tolar was superb and shut down the Opp
comeback effort. Opp is now 0-1 in the area and will not play Ashford
again until April 13. Daleville is the only other team in this area race.
With the loss, Opp drops to 3-4 with games this week at home April 20 with
Andalusia and Straughn April 23. The Bobcats travel to Troy Saturday,
April 24 to play a double-header with the Charles Henderson Trojans.
BOBCATS GET
WIN
The Opp Bobcats finally
got things moving into a positive direction with a big victory over
previously undefeated Red Level. The Tigers came into the game
8-0 and moved the game to Opp due to lighting concerns.
Red Level opened the game up
early with two runs in the first with some aggressive running and
offensive power. Opp's Rhett Barnes got a slow start before settling
in on the mound for the Bobcats. Although Barnes gave up 2 runs in
the first on two hits he was able to shut down the Tigers through the next
three innings giving up a run in the fourth. Rhett finished with 5
Ks before retiring for senior Zach Spann who pitched the final 3 innings
giving up a run on three hits. The Bobcats finished the night
scoring 5 on 8 hits with 4 errors.
