Softball Varsity Girls = Elba 6 Opp 3
For their second game last Friday night Opp (10-17) took on
the host team Elba Lady Tigers. The Lady Bobcats would come
out scoring to start the game. In the top of the first
inning Opp got on the board as Hannah Cooke was hit by the
first pitch of the game. Sierra Thorn would single to left
field putting two runners on for Adrianne Ellison. Ellison
would drive the ball deep to left center field scoring both
Cooke and Thorn to give Opp a 2-0. After an Andrea Edwards

score. Opp took a 3-0 lead before Elba even came up to bat.
The Lady Tigers led off the bottom of the first with a walk
and they would turn that into two runs after two Lady Bobcat
errors as Elba cut into the Opp lead at 3-2 after one inning
of play. Opp threatened in the top of the second with two
runners aboard and two outs but neither would score as Elba
got the final out to end the threat. Elba would take
advantage of another Opp error in the bottom of the third
inning scoring two more runs in the process to take the lead
at 4-3 after three innings. Opp's fourth error of the game
opened the door for Elba in the bottom of the fourth inning.
The Lady Tigers would score another run on a single after
the error to extend their lead to 5-3 after four innings of
play. After a quiet fifth inning Elba would score their
final run of the game in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Back to back singles to start the inning would result in
another run on a third single with one out to give Elba a
6-3 after six innings of play. With only three outs to work
with Opp tried to make a comeback in the top of the seventh
inning. Courtney Mobley started off the inning with a base
hit and after a stolen base was at second base with no outs.
Elba would get the next three batters to end the game and
pick up the win 6-3. The Lady Bobcats were led by Courtney
Mobley who went 2 for 2 at the plate with a double and a
stolen base. Adrianne Ellison and Sierra Thorn each went 1

Softball Varsity Girls = Opp 5 Goshen 2
The Opp (10-16) Lady Bobcats entered the final weekend of
regular season play with a tournament in Elba. The first

Bobcat error to give the Lady Eagles a 1-0 lead with Opp
coming up to bat. In the bottom of the first inning the Lady
Bobcats got a runner aboard when Sydney Jones reached on
single but would be stranded at second base. Opp held Goshen
in the top of the second inning and then looked to get on
the board in the bottom half of the inning. Andrea Edwards
reached base on a Goshen error to get the Lady Bobcat
started. After a stolen base Edwards came around to score on
a Joi Rhymes double to center field tying the game at 1-1.

fourth inning. Joi Rhymes would double with one out and
being driven in on a Courtney Mobley double with two outs.
Mobley would score on a Hannah Cooke single to center field
extending Opp's lead to 5-2. With no outs in the bottom of
the fifth inning and the bases loaded for Opp the game would
be called due to time limit giving Opp the win 5-2. The Lady
Bobcats were led by Joi Rhymes who went 2 for 2 at the plate
with 2 doubles, an RBI, and 2 runs scored. On the mound
Sydney Jones went the distance giving up 2 runs on 5 hits
with 3 walks, a hit batter, and 9 strikeouts.
Opp gains over 1A Bulldogs
The Opp Bobcats picked up against the
Brantley Bulldogs one week after falling to last year's 1A Champion
Kinston Bulldogs. The up and down Bobcats gained a 1-0 lead
after the second, but Brantley looked to have a victory in hand
after scoring three in the third.
Each team added runs until Opp managed to tie the game at
four in the sixth. The Bobcats poured
in three runs in the seventh to gain the 7-4 victory over Brantley.
Sydney Jones picked up the win pitching all seven allowing four hits
throughout the game. Jones also scored two runs and watched
her teammates on offense as Alli Colquett hit a home run with two

Opp 7, Brantley 5
Last Monday Opp (9-16) traveled to Brantley to play
the Lady Bulldogs for the third time this season. The Lady
Bobcats were looking to sweep all three games from Brantley
this season. Neither team would score in the first inning as
Opp got runners to second and third and did not score and
Brantley went down in order. The Lady Bobcats would strike
first in the top of the second when Katelyn Mikel would
score on an Andrea Edwards gound ball to give Opp a 1-0 lead
after two innings. The game would remain 1-0 until the
bottom of the third when Brantley would strike for three
runs off of two base hits and a walk and a hit batter to
take a 3-1 lead after three innings. Opp would respond in
the top of the fourth inning. With two outs and nobody on
Katelyn Mikel hit a triple to right center field.
Alli Colquett would drive her in with a single cutting the
Lady Bulldog lead to 3-2 heading to the bottom of the
fourth. Brantley would add the run back in the bottom of the
fourth with a single to start the inning and a double with
two outs putting them back out in front by two runs 4-2
after four innings. Opp responded in the top of the fifth
again with two outs. Sydney Jones walked with two outs and
nobody on and would come around to score on an Adrianne
Ellison single to center field cutting the Brantley lead
back to one at 4-3 after five innings. With one out in the
top of the sixth opp got the play it needed to get back in
the game. Alli Colquett slammed a drive to deep right field
all the way to the fence for her third inside the park
homerun of the year tying the ball game at 4-4 with only one
inning left to play. The inside the park homer by Colquett
also marked her second one against Brantley this year with
the other one coming as part of a 10-9 win by Opp in the
Straughn tournament earlier this year. With the momentum of
Colquett's homer in the sixth Opp took over the game in the
seventh. Sydney Jones got the Lady Bobcats started with a
walk to lead off the inning. Sierra Thorn singled to left
field putting two aboard with no outs.
Adrianne Ellison gave Opp the lead with a double to center
field. Katelyn Mikel would follow with a single to to put
Opp ahead 7-4 in the top of the seventh inning. With only
three outs to work with Brantley attempted to make a
comeback in the bottom of the seventh. They would get one
run in on an Opp error but that would be all as the Lady
Bobcats held on to win the game 7-5. The Lady Bobcats were
led by Katelyn Mikel who went 3 for 4 at the plate with a
double, 2 singles, 2 stolen bases, an RBI and 2 runs scored.
Alli Colquett went 2 for 3 with an inside the park homerun,
a single, a hit by pitch, 2 RBI, and a run scored. Sierra
Thorn and Adrianne Ellison each had two hits along with a
run scored for both as well. Eillison also had 2 RBIs. On
the mound Sydney Jones went the distance giving up 5 runs on
4 hits with 4 walks, a hit batter, and 2 strikeouts.

Kinston 9 Opp 0
With most of their injured players back
the 2007 1A state champion Kinston Lady Bulldogs hosted the
Opp Lady Bobcats (8-16) last Tuesday afternoon. Opp would

first inning. Sierra Thorn was hit by a pitch and would be
stranded at first base as Kinston got the next out to end
the inning. From the bottom of the first inning on it was
all Lady Bulldogs. Kinston went to work quickly in the
bottom of the first inning sending ten batters to the plate
and scoring five of the first six batters to take a 5-0 lead
after just one inning of play.
Kinston would add another run in the bottom of the second
inning with a single followed by a two out double to put the

batters, and a strikeout.

Opp 8 Luverne 4
After an 0-3 performance in games over the weekend, Opp
(8-15) looked to bounce back into the win column Monday
against Luverne. Joi Rhymes would lead off the game with a
walk and would wind up at third base with two outs.
She would be left stranded though as Luverne got the third out to end the
Opp threat. Luverne would go quietly in the bottom of the
first and neither team would threaten in the second inning.
Opp would break the scoreless tie and get on the board in
the top of third inning. Three walks to lead off the inning
would turn into three runs. A Joi Rhymes sacrifice and two
passed balls later Opp had built a 3-0 lead.
The Lady Tigers would respond in the bottom of the third
with two walks to lead off the inning followed by a passed
ball and a sacrifice as Luverne cut the the Opp lead to one
at 3-2. Adrianne Ellison led off the Bobcat fourth with a
single and she would come around to score on a walk with the

kept Luverne at bay for most of the game but would be tested
in the last inning. A hit batter, a walk, and a single on
the first three batters of the inning for Luverne loaded the
bases with the top of the Lady Tiger lineup coming to bat.
Luverne would manage to bring two runners home on a
sacrifice and a passed ball but would fall short of a
comeback as Opp got three outs in a row to end the game and
pick up the win 8-5. The Lady Bobcats were led by Adrianne
Ellison who went 2 for 4 at the plate with Opp's only 2 base
hits of the game both singles. Ellison also had 2 stolen

New Brockton 3 Opp 0

After
splitting two games Opp (7-12) traveled to New Brockton for the rubber
game of the season. Both teams won their game with a shutout with Opp
winning the first game 6-0 and New Brockton winning the second game
4-0.
Joi Rhymes and Adrianne Ellison both got singles for Opp in the top of
the first inning as Opp had runners on second and third with just one
out. The Lady Bobcats would fail to score when a passed ball bounced
right back to the New Brockton catcher enabling the Lady Gamecock to get
the third out at home ending the Lady Bobcat threat.

After getting one runner aboard via an Opp error Newe Brockton would not
threaten in the bottom of the first inning. Andrea Edwards would lead
off the top of the second inning with a single but would be left
stranded at second base. New Brockton would strike out the next three
Opp batters to end the inning. In the bottom of the second inning the
Lady Gamecocks got on the board with a lead off single followed by a
bloop single with two outs to take a 1-0 lead after two innings.
Defense would be the key in innings three and four with just the Lady
Bobcats getting a runner aboard in the third via a hit by pitch. In the
bottom of the fifth inning the Lady Gamecocks would capitalize on a Lady
Bobcat error to start the inning.

Turning
the error into a run New Brockton extended their lead to 2-0 after five
innings of play. Deja vu occurred for Opp in the sixth innings when the
lead off batter for New Brockton reached on an error for the second
inning in a row. After a walk to the next batter New Brockton would
score their final run of the game on a single to right center field.
With the Lady Gamecocks up 3-0 Opp looked to make a comeback in the top
of the 7th. Katelyn Mikel got the rally started with one out hitting a
double to center field. Hannah Cooke moved her over to third base and
Courtney Mobley got a walk with two outs.
With
the tying run at the plate New Brockton would close the game as Joi
Rhymes popped up to left field for the final out giving the Lady
Gamecocks the win 3-0. The Lady Bobcats had five hits in the game with
Joi Rhymes, Adrianne Ellison, Andrea Edwards, Alli Colquett, and Katelyn
Mikel all registering a base hit each. Alli Colquett and Katelyn Mikel
each had a double, and Colquett also stole two bases. On the mound
Sydney Jones went the distance giving up 3 runs on 4 hits with just 1
walk, 2 hit batters, and 4 strikeouts.

Opp 11 New Brockton 11 (6 innings)
In their final game of the season the Opp (11-2-1) JV softball team
looked to end the season on a positive note. The Lady Bobcats got
things started in the top of the first inning. Bailey Croft scored with
two outs on a walk, two stolen bases, and a passed ball giving Opp a 1-0
lead. New Brockton responded in the bottom of the first inning with two
hits and an Opp error to tie the game at 1-1 after one inning of play.
In the bottom of the second inning the Lady Gamecocks scored four runs
all of whom reached base on walks to take a 5-1 lead in the game. New
Brockton sent up ten batters in the inning and only had just two hits in
all ten at bats. Bailey Croft was hit a a pitch to start the top of the
third inning when Opp would be the victim of another controversal call
in the field. Beth Anne Spurlin hit a ground ball to the Lady Gamecock
second baseman. With Croft racing towards second the New Brockton
shortstop caught the relay from the second baseman and without even
touching second base hurled a throw towards first that was dropped by
the Lady Gamecock first baseman. However instead of both girls being
safe the umpire in the field claimed Croft interfered with the throw to
first base and called both girls out on the play. Instead of that play
hindering Opp for the rest of the game it would spark Opp's offense in
the top of the fourth inning. New Brockton would walk the first six
batters of the inning as Opp scored two runs on two walks with the bases
loaded. Beth Anne Spurlin hit a single out to right center field
scoring two more runs as Opp would score seven runs in the
inning turning a 5-1 deficit into an 8-5 lead. New Brockton would
recover in the bottom of the fourth with a pair of hits and an walk to
score three runs to tie the game a 8-8 heading into the fifth inning.
Opp would go down in order in the fifth as New Brockton looked to win
the game in the bottom half of the inning. With two outs and runners on
first and second New Brockton hit a sharp ground ball in between
shortstop and second base. With the game on the line New Brockton sent
the runner from third home but she would be gunned down by Savannah
Gerber for the third out of the inning keeping the game tied at 8-8.
The game would go into extra innings and in the top of the sixth Opp
sent the entire lineup to the plate scoring three runs to take an 11-8
lead with New Brockton coming to bat. In the bottom of the sixth inning
the Lady Gamecock would duplicate Opp and send its entire lineup to the
plate scoring three runs to tie the game up once again this time at
11-11. Unfortunately for both teams the game would end in a tie at
11-11 when it was decided to call the game so that the varsity girl's
game could begin. The Lady Bobcats were lead by Bailey Croft who
reached base in every plate appearance but one stealing 4 bases and
scoring 3 runs. On the mound Hillary Mock started the game going two
innings before being relieved by Kourtney Bradley who pitched the rest
of the way. The JV Lady Bobcats finish their remarkable season with an
11-2-1 record defeating every team they played at least once.

Opp 12 Florala 0
After a defensive game against Andalusia in the game before the Opp
(7-11) bats looked to come alive in Florala Monday afternoon. Joi Rhymes
got the Lady bobcats started leading off the top of the first inning
with a base hit. Sierra Thorn would drive Rhymes in for the first score
of the game giving Opp a 1-0 lead after one inning of play.
In the top of the second inning Opp looked to put the game well out of
reach. Sending fifteen batters to the plate the Lady Bobcats would
convert six Lady Wildcat walks and two hitter batters into eight runs in
the inning. Opp also had two doubles in the inning to extend their lead
to 9-0 after just innings of play. Sydney Jones would lead off the top
of the third inning with a single followed by an Adrianne Ellison single
to right field which would score Jones to give Opp a 10-0 lead. Ellison
also came around to score on an Andrea Edwards RBI double to give Opp an
11-0 lead after three innings of play.
The pitching and defense for Opp kept Florala from threatening to score
through the first four innings with only one base runner reaching third
base. In the top of the fifth Sydney Jones would once again lead off the
inning with a single and would come around to score two batters later on
a Sierra Thorn base hit to give Opp a 12-0 lead heading to the bottom of
the fifth. Needing three runs to continue the game Florala looked to
attempt a rally in the bottom of the fifth.
The Lady Wildcats would get two base runners aboard breaking up pitcher
Joi Rhymes' no hitter in the process. The Lady Bobcats would hold and
get the final three outs to end the game in five innings and pick up the
win 12-0. The Lady Bobcats were led by Sydney Jones who went a perfect 2
for 2 at the plate with a hit by pitch, 2 singles, and 3 runs scored.
Sierra Thorn and Adrianne Ellison both went 2 for 3 at the plate with
each scoring 2 runs. Thorn also had 2 RBIs and Ellison 1 RBI and a
double. On the mound Joi Rhymes went the distance pitching a 1 hit
shutout. Rhymes faced just 19 batters giving up just 1 walk, hitting 2
batters, and registering 4 strikeouts.

Opp 21 Florala 7
The JV game between Opp (11-2) and Florala last Monday featured
seventeen walks in the game by Florala including nine in one inning
alone. Opp came to bat in the top of the first inning and would send the
entire line up to bat twice. Seventeen batters came to the plate for Opp
in the first inning.
The first six batters would all come around to score and Florala would
walk four batters in a row two time during the inning. As Florala came
to bat in the bottom of the first inning Opp had already built an 11-0
lead. The Lady Wildcats would get a walk and a base hit in the bottom of
the first inning as they got on the scoreboard at 11-1 after one inning
of play.
Both teams would go down quietly in the second with neither team would
get a base runner. Opp would go back to work in the top of the third
inning. The Lady Bobcats would take advantage of three Lady Wildcat
errors in the inning to push three more runs across extending their lead
to 14-1 heading to the bottom of the third. Florala would have their
biggest inning of the game in the bottom of the third inning.
Converting on three hits and three walks in the inning Florala would
send the entire line up to the plate. They would score four runs in the
process and cut the Opp lead to 14-5 heading to the fourth. Opp would go
quietly in the top of the fourth inning with only one batter reaching
base via a walk. In the bottom of the fourth Florala would score two
more runs on three base hits as they looked to make a comeback by
cutting the Opp lead to 14-7.
Any thoughts of a comeback were quickly dashed in the top of the fifth.
Opp would score seven more runs in the top of the fifth putting the game
all but out of reach. Florala would walk four batters in a row for the
third time in the game as Opp would extend the lead to fourteen points
at 21-7. The Lady Wildcats would go 1-2-3 in the bottom of the fifth
giving Opp the football score win of 21-7. Every Opp player on the
roster who got an at bat during the game would score at least one run
with Bailey Croft, Beth Anne Spurlin, and Alli Jessie leading the way
each scoring 3 times.

Andalusia 1 Opp 0
Last Thursday Opp (6-11) and Andalusia (14-10) put on one of the best
pitcher's duels in high school softball that you will find. Great
defensive plays and stops contributed to the game being kept to the
slimmest of scoring margins as well with only one run being scored the
entire game by both teams.
Opp went down on strikes in both the first two innings and Andalusia
managed to get one base runner in each of the first two innings but
neither team would score as both pitchers cruised through each inning
without any trouble. The Lady Bobcats finally broke through with a base
hit in the top of the third inning when Katelyn Mikel got a single to
right field. After a stolen base she ended up being stranded at second
base as Andalusia retired the next three batters to end the Opp threat.
The Lady Bobcats biggest chance to score came in the top of the fourth
inning when two base runners reached base. Sydney Jones and Sierra Thorn
each reached base with a pair of singles.
With the runners on first and second and one out Andalusia would
strikeout the next two batters leaving both runners stranded. Both teams
would go in order in the fifth with each pitcher facing the minimum
three batters each time. Opp would go 1-2-3 in the top of the sixth as
well with the game still scoreless. In the bottom of the sixth inning
Andalusia led off the inning with a single which was their first base
runner since the second inning.
With one out and two runners aboard Andalusia hit a double to right
field which would score the game's only run giving Andalusia a 1-0 lead
after six innings. In the top of the seventh the Lady Bobcats would make
the game very interesting. Sierra Thorn would single to center field to
lead off the top of the seventh. After two stolen bases the Lady Bobcats
had the game tying run on third base.
Andalusia would strikeout the next three batters to end the game leaving
the tying run stranded on third base. Andalusia won the pitcher's duel
1-0 with with the aid of 15 strikeouts against Opp batters. The Lady
Bobcats were led by Sierra Thorn who went 2 for 3 at the plate with 2
singles and 2 stolen bases. On the mound Sydney Jones went the distance
giving up just 1 run on 4 hits with no walks and 7 strikeouts.

Opp 11 Andalusia 7
With the two teams splitting the first two games of the season Opp
(10-2) traveled to Andalusia for the rubber game of the season series.
The Lady Bobcats looked to make a statement early in the game. Savannah
Gerber walked to lead off the game and would come around to score the
game's first run. A big double by Haley Norris would bring home Bailery
Croft to give Opp a 2-0 lead with Andalusia coming to bat. Andalusia
would respond in the bottom of the first sending all nine batters to the
plate and scoring three runs to take a 3-2 lead after the first inning.
Opp would respond in the top of the second as well tying the game with
one swing of the bat. Savannah Gerber hit a fly ball to deep left field
and would come all the way around to score on her fourth inside the park
homerun of the year to tie the score at 3-3. The tie would not last long
when Andalusia got a run in the bottom of the second inning on a walk
followed by a double with two outs as the Lady Bulldogs reclaimed the
lead at 4-3 after two innings. Opp would answer right back in the top of
the third with a run off of a Allison Kelley base hit that would score
Beth Anne Spurlin tying the game once again at 4-4. In the bottom of the
third Andalusia attempted to put the game out of reached as they scored
two runs in the inning with one out. Looking for more Andalusia loaded
with bases with just one out, but a huge double play by the Lady Bobcat
defense would put out the threat and hold Andalusia to just two runs in
the inning. With the Lady Bulldogs leading 6-4 going to the fourth, Opp
would answer back as they had done the previous two innings. Walks to
Octavia Thompson and Savannah Gerber to start the inning would pay off
as both came around to score on base hits by Alicia Mummert and Bailey
Croft as Opp tied the game once again this time at 6-6. In the bottom of
the fourth the Lady Bobcat defense dug in and prevented a score by
Andalusia which would spark the bats for Opp in the top of the fifth.
With the score tied at 6-6 Opp looked to take the lead for good in the
top of the fifth inning. Sparked by their defensive stand in the bottom
of the fourth the Lady Bobcats would take their time in the top of the
fifth as Andalusia's pitching totally melted down. The Lady Bulldogs
gave up three straight walks to begin in the inning and after getting an
no balls and two strikes count on Leah Kouvelous Andalusia would hit
Kouvelous with the next pitch driving in the go ahead run. It would stop
there as Opp would drive in four more runs to open up a five run lead at
11-6 with Andalusia only having one more chance at bat. The Lady
Bulldogs got the lead off runner aboard in the bottom of the fifth on a
lead off single. A Lady Bobcat error with two outs would allow her to
score but it would not be enough as Opp retired the next batter to get
the win 11-7. The Lady Bobcats were led by Savannah Gerber who went 1
for 2 at the plate with an inside the park homerun, 2 walks and 3 runs
scored.

Pleasant Home 3 Opp 1
The last time Opp (6-10) faced Pleasant Home during the first week of
the season the Lady Bobcats were shutout by the Lady Eagles 16-0 in just
three innings. Last Tuesday's rematch would be much
different.
A much improved Lady Bobcat team traveled to Pleasant Home to take on
the 1A #1 ranked Lady Eagles. The game would turn out to be a defensive
battle as both pitchers kept the other team from scoring. Opp would get
a runner aboard in the top of the first but could not move her around to
score as the Lady Eagles came to bat. Starting pitcher Sydney Jones
would sit Pleasant Home down in order in the bottom of the first.
Opp would threaten in the second getting two base runners aboard, but
they would not be able to bring them home as Pleasant Home would get all
three outs in the inning via strike out to end the Lady Bobcat threat.
Opp would match Pleasant Home in the bottom of the second retiring the
side leaving the game scoreless going into the third. Joi Rhymes walked
to begin the top of the third and would make it all the way to third
base but would be left stranded as Pleasant Home got a pop up in the
infield to end the Lady Bobcat threat. The Lady Bobcats seemed to have
all the momentum in the bottom of the third as they got two outs in one
play.
A Pleasant Home batter popped up to catcher Sierra Thorn and then a Lady
Eagle runner was doubled off of first base for a double play. Pleasant
Home got another runner aboard with a walk and then a sure inning ending
out turned into an inside the park homerun as a fly ball to left field
was caught then dropped when two Lady Bobcat players collided on the
play. Fortunately neither player was injured on the play, but Pleasant
Home scored two runs to take a 2-0 lead into the fourth inning.
Opp would get a run back in the top of the fourth on a Sydney Jones
triple with two outs followed by an Adrianne Ellison single that brought
Jones home to the cut the Lady Eagle lead to 2-1. Pleasant Home got
another run in the bottom of the fifth on back to back doubles as they
extended their lead to 3-1. Neither team would get another base runner
aboard for the rest of the game as Pleasant Home would get the win by
the score of 3-1. The Lady Bobcats were led by Adrianne Ellison who went
1 for 2 at the plate with a walk, a single, and an RBI. On the mound
Sydney Jones went the distance giving up 3 runs on 4 hits with 2 walks
and 4 strikeouts.
Softball JV Girls
Pleasant Home 5 Opp 2
The Opp (9-2) JV girls met Pleasant Home back in the first week of the
season it was Opp who got the win. Last Tuesday they looked to make it
two for two against Pleasant Home. Neither team would get a runner
aboard in the first inning as each team tried to see what the other one
had. In the top of the second inning Opp would get on the board first
when Alicia Mummert hit a double to right field and then came around to
score on a passed ball by Pleasant Home that gave the Lady Bobcats a 1-0
lead. The Lady Eagles would respond in the bottom of the second inning
scoring three runs of their own. After a walk and a single Pleasant Home
got a triple that scored two runs and then a passed ball brought in the
third run to give the Lady Eagles a 3-1 going into the third inning. Opp
looked to score in the third when Leah Kouvelous reached third base on a
Pleasant Home error, but would be stranded as the Lady Eagles would get
the next three batters out to end the threat. The top of the fourth
would see a very controversal call by the officials when Alicia Mummert
was running to first base. The umpire in the field claimed that Mummert
ran out of the base line and called her out despite the fact the ball
was thrown away by Pleasant Home. A protest by the Opp coaching staff
and a meeting in the field ensued, but the call would stand and Opp
would be turned away in the fourth. Pleasant Home would add to their
lead in the bottom of the fourth inning scoring two more runs to take a
5-1 lead heading into the fifth and last inning. Opp bagan a rally in
the top of the fifth scoring a run to cut the lead to 5-2 and appeared
to be on the way to another run. Allison Kelley tripled and then
attempted to come to home on the next play when she slid into to home
plate getting her foot on the plate but she would be called out as Opp
was on the short end of another close and controversial call. Pleasant
Home got the last out and picked up the win 5-2. The Lady Bobcats were
led by Alicia Mummert who went 1 for 2 at the plate with a double, 2
stolen bases and a run scored. On the mound Kourtney Bradley went the
distance giving up 5 runs on 4 hits with 3 walks and 5 strikeouts.
Bulldogs fall to
Lady Bobcats
Opp 13 Brantley 7
After
a huge comeback win over Brantley in the Straughn Tournament
Opp (6-9) would face the Lady Bulldogs in a rematch in Opp
Monday afternoon. This game would be the Lady Bobcats
home finale for the 2008 regular season.
Brantley would threaten in the top of the first as they got
a runner to third base with one out but would turned away
when Opp retired the next two batters to keep the game
scoreless. Opp came up in the bottom of the first inning
looking to score.
Seven of the first eight batters reached base and the Lady
Bobcats would score three runs on six hits in the inning.
Four of those hits came with two outs giving Opp a 3-0 lead
after one inning. Brantley would respond by tripling to lead
off top of the second inning. Opp ended that threat by
retiring the runner on an attempt to steal home plate on
passed ball.
Despite the failure to score on that play Brantley would
score two runs on three hits in the top of the second inning
to cut the Lady Bobcat lead to 3-2. Opp got another run in
the bottom of the second inning when Joi Rhymes would single
to start the inning and later come home on an Adrianne
Ellison double to give Opp at 4-2 lead heading into the
third inning. Neither team would score in the third inning
despite both teams getting a runner to third base.
Sydney
Jones would come around to score for Opp in the fourth on
double by Adrianne Ellison to extend Opp's lead to 5-2. In
the fifth inning Opp would get three more runs as they took
command of the game at 8-2 heading into the sixth. Brantley
would attempt to get back into the game in the top of the
sixth scoring two runs on a Bobcat error as they cut the
lead to 8-4. Opp would respond in a big way in the bottom of
the sixth scoring five runs with the first five batters of
the inning all coming around to score.
Opp would fall short of ending the game via the ten run rule
in the sixth, but would take a nine run lead into the
seventh at 13-4. With one out Brantley would get a couple of
base hits and would turn them into runs scoring three in the
inning. It would not be enough as Opp got the final out and
the win 13-7. The Lady Bobcats were led by Adrianne Ellison
who went 4 for 5 at the plate with 2 singles, 2 doubles, 4
RBIs, a stolen base, and a run scored.
Joi Rhymes went 2 for 5 reaching base on an error with a
single, a double, 3 stolen bases, an RBI, and 3 runs scored.
Rhymes also got the win on the mound going 5 innings giving
up 4 runs on 5 hits with 2 walks and 2 strikeouts. Sydney
Jones came in relief going 2 innings giving up 2 runs on
just 1 hits, with 1 walk and 4 strikeouts.

Straughn Tournament
Softball Varsity Girls =
Opp 10 Brantley 9
In the first game of the Straughn tournament Thursday
afternoon Opp (5-7) took on the Brantley Lady Bulldogs for
the first time this season. The game would be back and forth
throughout with Brantley getting the edge early in the game.
Opp went down quietly in the top of the first inning, as
Brantley came to bat. The Lady Bulldogs would get three runs
on two hits and a Lady Bobcat error as Brantley took a 3-0
lead after one inning. Opp would respond in the top of the
second inning with three runs of their own to tie the game
at 3-3. Brantley broke the tie in the bottom of the second
inning as the first five batters all reached base.
Four would come around to score on three straight hits for
Brantley giving them a 7-3 lead heading into the third
inning. Opp would respond in the top of the third when
Adrianne Ellison reached on a fielder's choice, and Alli
Colquett would line a shot to right center field for her
third inside the park homerun of the season.
The Lady Bobcats cut the lead to 7-5, but would see Brantley
extend the lead back out to four runs at 9-5 by inning's
end. The top of the fourth would see the game's tide turn.
Opp led off the inning with a Katelyn Mikel single, and the
hits would keep coming. The Lady Bobcats would get seven
straight base hits and score an amazing five runs in the
process to take the lead in the game at 10-9.
With the game's momentum shifted Opp looked to Sydney Jones
to shut down the Bulldogs. Jones would do just that going
lights out against Brantley as she faced the minimum nine
batters over the next three innings. Opp held on to win the
game 10-9 led by their five run fourth inning to put them on
top for good. The Lady Bobcats were led by Alli Colquett who
went a perfect 4 for 4 at the plate hitting for the cycle,
with a single, double, triple, and homerun, along with 2
runs scored. On the mound Joi Rhymes got the win going 3
innings giving up 9 runs on 8 hits with 5 walks and no
strikeouts. Sydney Jones came in relief to pick up the save
going three innings giving up no runs or hits with no walks
and 3 strikeouts.
Softball Varsity Girls = Straughn 9 Opp 0
In their second game of Pool play of the Straughn tournament
Opp (5-8) took on the host team Straughn Lady Tigers in the
night cap game. The game started out close as Opp went
quietly in the top of the first and Straughn got one run in
the bottom of the first on a pair of singles and a double.
Both teams would not threaten in the second and third
innings as Opp and Straughn had difficulty getting runners
aboard. The Lady Tigers would break the game open in the
bottom of the fourth inning. Straughn would send eight
batters to the plate with four runners coming around to
score on a walk and four hits in the inning.
With three singles and a double Straughn would take a 5-0
lead after four innings. In the bottom of the fifth it would
seem like deja vu as the Lady Tigers would send eight
batters to the plate again with four more runs scoring on
four more hits as Straughn expanded its lead to 9-0. Once
again the Lady Tigers scored on three singles and a double.
The Lady Bobcats had one last chance in the top of the sixth
but would go down 1-2-3 as Straughn won the game 9-0.
The Lady Bobcats were led by Joi Rhymes who went 1 for 1 at
the plate reaching base all 3 times on 2 walks and a single.
Rhymes also had a stolen base and would be the only runner
of the night to reach second base for Opp. On the mound
Sydney Jones went the distance giving up 9 runs on 13 hits
with just 1 walk and no strikouts.

Softball Varsity Girls = Opp 12 Florala 2
After going an entire week without scoring a single run the
Opp (2-6) Lady Bobcats looked to end that drought last
Monday against Florala. They would not have to wait long to
get on the board. After Florala walked and scored one in the
top of the first Opp came to bat and Helena Harrison got
things started for Opp with a single to centerfield. After a
hit batter Andrea Edwards would drive the runners in to get
up the lead 2-1 and end the Lady Bobcats scoring drought.
Florala would go quietly as Opp came to bat in the bottom of
the second inning. Courtney Mobley would triple to deep left
field and would be brought in by Helena Harrison on an RBI
sacrifice infield ground ball that gave Opp a 3-1 lead. The
Lady Bobcats and Lady Wildcats each got two runner aboard in
the third inning but could not get a runner around to score
as the score remained 3-1 heading into the fourth. Florala
got the lead off batter on and she would later score on a
single to cut the lead to 3-2 and give Florala some momentum
going into the fifth. Looking to tie or possibly take the
lead Florala loaded the bases in the fifth with no outs but
would turned away by a great defensive play on a force out
at home followed by two straight strikeouts by pitcher
Sydney Jones to end the inning and any Lady Wildcat threat.
With the momentum in the other direction Opp went to work in
the bottom of the fifth sending fifteen batters to plate and
closing the door on any hopes of a Florala upset as the
final run came when Courtney Mobley was hit by a pitch for
the second time in the inning to bring in the game ending
run as Opp got a much needed win 12-2. The Lady Bobcats were
led by Sydney Jones who helped her cause on the mound going
3 for 4 at the plate with 2 singles, a double, an RBI, 3
stolen bases, and 2 runs scored. Helena Harrison went 2 for
3 with 2 singles, an RBI, 3 stolen bases, and 2 runs scored.
On the mound Sydney Jones went the distance giving up 2 runs
on 6 hits with 3 walks and 10 strikeouts.
Softball JV Girls = Opp 18 Florala 7
After winning two of three games in their tournament last
Saturday Opp (6-1) took to the field against Florala last
Monday afternoon and the Lady Bobcats struck early and
often. After Florala went quietly in the top of the first
Opp started the bottom of the first with three straight
singles en route to scoring five runs and taking a 5-0 lead
into the second inning. Florala went quietly in the top of
the second as well and Opp added three more in the bottom of
the second inning as they took command of the game at 8-0.
Florala would get on the board in the top of the third with
two walks and an error the Lady Wildcats got three runs to
cut the Lady Bobcat lead to 8-3. Opp got two more in the
bottom of the third on four walks and a couple of wild
pitches that gave Opp a 10-3 lead as the teams headed to the
fourth. Florala got two more in the top of the fourth and
then Opp began to score at will in the bottom of the fourth
highlighted by Beth Anne Spurlin's inside the park homerun.
Opp got eight runs in the inning to give them an 18-5 lead
as they headed to the top of the fifth. In the top of the
fifth Florala would get two runs but the deficit was too
great as Opp picked up the win 18-7. The Lady Bobcats were
led by Bailey Croft who went a perfect 2 for 2 at the plate
with 2 singles, a walk, a hit by pitch, 3 runs scored, and 6
stolen bases. Savannah Gerber went 2 for 3 with 2 singles, a
walk, 3 runs scored and 5 stolen bases.

New Brockton 4 Opp 0

Thursday's game between Opp (1-5) and New Brockton was a
rematch from the Tournament last Saturday in Andalusia. The
Lady Bobcats look to win another game against an improved
Lady Gamecock team. Neither team threatened in the first
inning as both teams went three up and three down. New
Brockton got the lead off batter on as she was hit by a
pitch, and with one out a single and a triple by the Lady
Gamecocks put them ahead 2-0 as Opp came to bat in the
bottom of the second. Lead off batter Hannah Cooke stroked a
single to right field to lead off the inning but she would
be stranded as New Brockton would strikeout the next three
batters. Neither team could score in the third or fourth
innings as New Brockton came to bat in the top of the fifth.
After a leadoff walk and a single to get the runner to third
a passed ball allowed the run to score as the Lady Gamecocks
took a 3-0 after five innings. The sixth inning saw neither
team threaten a score as New Brockton came to bat in the top
of the seventh. The Lady Bobcats had played errorless ball
until the seventh when two errors on the first two batters
would result in another New Brockton run as the Lady
Gamecocks got a key single with two outs to bring in their
fourth and final run of the afternoon and took a 4-0 into
the bottom of the seventh. The Lady Bobcats were retired in
order as New Brockton struck out the side in the seventh to
win the game 4-0. Strikeouts would hinder the Lady Bobcats
all game as they were fanned 15 times in 27 at bats by New
Brockton pitching. The Lady Bobcats were led by Helena
Harrison who went 1 for 2 at the plate reaching base twice
with a single and a hit by pitch. Hannah Cooke was also 1
for 2 reaching base twice as well with a single and a walk.
On the mound Sydney Jones went the distance for Opp giving
up 4 runs on 4 hits, with 4 walks and 7 strikeouts.
Opp 4 - New Brockton 3

The Opp (2-0) JV girls looked to better their great start to
the season on Thursday against New Brockton as they took on
the JV Lady Gamecocks in another close thiller. Neither team
would score in the first as both team were set down in
order. New Brockton would strike first in the top of the
secon inning as a routine single turned into three bases as
the Lady Bobcats committed two throwing errors on the play.
The next batter drove the runner in and New Brockton took a
1-0 lead after two innings. The top of the third inning New
Brockton got the first two batters on with two walks to
start the inning and one run would score on passed ball and
the other on a single to left field as New Brockton took a
3-0 lead into the bottom of the third. The Lady Bobcats
would respond as lead off batter Beth Anne Spurlin would be
hit by a pitch to start the inning. After two sacrifices to
move the runner to third, Savannah Gerber hit an RBI single
to right to make it a 3-1 ballgame. Gerber would then steal
second and third base and then would come home on a wild
throw to pull the Lady Bobcats to within one run at 3-2
after three innings. Pitcher Ali Taylor came in and shut
down New Brockton in the fourth and Opp would then save
their best inning at the plate for when it counted most.
With two outs Opp managed to get two runners aboard and then
Beth Anne Spurlin would rip a double into left field that
would score the tying run and on the play a bad Lady
Gamecock throw allowed the go ahead run to score as well as
Opp had taken the lead 4-3 at the end of four innings after
the being down 3-0. Kourtnee Bradley came in and got the
first two batters of the fifth inning out before an error
got a runner aboard and she managed to get to third base but
a routine ground ball to shortstop ended the New Brockton
threat and the game as Opp held on for the 4-3 comeback win.
The Lady Bobcats were led by Beth Anne Spurlin who went 1
for 1 at the plate with a single, a run scored, and she was
a hit by pitch. Savannah Gerber, Haley Norris, and Allison
Kelley all three went 1 for 2 each with a single, and a run
scored. On the mound Hillary Mock started the game going 2
innings giving up 3 runs on 2 hits, with 4 walks and a
strikeout. Ali Taylor came on in relief to pick up the win
going 2 innings giving up no runs, 1 hit, with no walks and
2 strikeouts. Kourtnee Bradley got the save as she went 1
inning giving up no runs, hits, or walks and recording 1
strikeout.
Straughn 11 Opp 0
(program23 correspondent - tripp
norris)
A day after playing a very close game against the 2007 1A
champion Kinston Lady Bulldogs, Opp (1-4) looked to try to
even the score against county rival Straughn in a rematch of
their meeting in the Andalusia Tournament.
Unfortunately this day would belong to the Lady Tigers.
Straughn would get on the board first with a hit batter who
was later drove in on a double with two outs to give
Straughn a 1-0 lead with the Lady Bobcats coming to bat.
Adrianne Ellison would get on base with a single to right
field with two outs as Opp looked to even the score but she
would be stranded at second base as the next batter was
retired ending the threat.
Neither team threatened in the second inning as Straughn
entered the top of the third clinging to a one run lead.
Straughn sent its entire lineup to the plate against Lady
Bobcat pitcher Hanna Harrison in the third inning as all
nine batters came to the plate with the Lady Tigers pushing
five runs across on just two hits and two Bobcat errors.
With a 6-0 lead Straughn continued to pound out the hits in
the fourth inning scoring five more runs coming on five hits
to take a commanding 11-0 lead. The Lady Bobcats were
stunned as they were down 1-2-3 in both the third and fourth
innings. Harrison departed after four innings and Joi Rhymes
came in relief shutting down Straughn in order in the top of
the fifth. Opp would have to score two runs for the game to
continue, and they would get a shot in the bottom of the
fifth.
The would get the shot with the help of two walks of the the
first three batters of the inning but would not able to
score as Straughn retired the last two batters to end the
game in the fifth inning via the ten run and win 11-0. The
Lady Bobcats were held to just one hit and it came from
Adrianne Ellison who went 1 for 2 from the plate with a
single to lead the Lady Bobcats. Katelyn Mikel also reached
base for the Lady Bobcats on two occasions with a walk and
she also reached on a Lady Tiger error. On the mound Hanna
Harrison went four innings giving up 11 runs, on 9 hits,
with 4 walks and 3 strikeouts. Joi Rhymes went one inning
retiring all three batters she faced.
Softball JV Girls = Opp 8 Straughn 6
With their game against Kinston canceled the Opp (1-0) JV
team took to the field against the JV Lady Tigers last
Tuesday afternoon for their season opener. Straughn would
take an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning aided
by two Lady Bobcat errors in the field, but it would be
short lived as Opp benefited from a Lady Tiger error to push
a run across to tie the game at 1-1 after one inning. Errors
would continue to play a big part of the game as Opp
committed two more in the third inning allowing the Lady
Tigers to score three more runs to take a 4-1 lead into the
bottom of the third inning.
The Lady Bobcats would once again respond with two walks to
start the inning and then a clutch hit by Octavia Thompson
that drove in two runs. A walk to Bailey Croft and another
Straughn error would allow both Thompson and Croft to score
as Opp scored four in the bottom of the third to take a 5-4
after three innings. The top of the fourth would see
Straughn retake on the lead 6-5 as they led off the inning
with a single and a walk and scored on a pair of passed
balls. Opp would not fold as they responded in the bottom of
the fourth with a walk and a single to lead off the inning
with the crucial play of the game coming as Savannah Gerber
laid down a bunt that was poorly fielded by Straughn
resulting in a costly error that scored the go ahead runs as
Opp scored three in the bottom of the fourth to take a 8-6
lead into the fifth.
Pitcher Kourtney Bradley would throw her best inning of the
game at the right time as she got the Lady Tigers 1-2-3 to
seal the win for Opp in their season opener 8-6. The game
would go just five innings as some JV games play just five
if agreed upon by both coaches at the beginning of the game.
The Lady Bobcats were lead by Octavia Thompson who went 1
for 2 from the plate with an RBI single, a walk, a run
scored, she also reached base on an error. Savannah Gerber
also reached on an error, walked and scored 2 runs. On the
mound Kourtney Bradley went the distance for the Lady
Bobcats giving up 6 runs on just 4 hits, with only 2 walks,
and 4 strikeouts, including striking out the side on just 11
pitches in the second inning.
Bobcats fall to 1A Bulldogs
Softball Varsity Girls = Kinston 2 Opp 0
After a decent showing in the Andalusia
Tournament to start the season Opp (1-3) began their regular
season last Monday afternoon against the defending 1A state
champion Kinston Lady Bulldogs who were coming into the game
with injuries at key positions.
Kinston would strike first in the top of the first inning
and take advantage of two crucial Lady Bobcat errors to push
one run across for a 1-0 lead with Opp coming to bat.
Kinston retired the first two Lady Bobcats, but Helena
Harrison would be left stranded after getting the first Opp
hit of the game. Both teams would go down quietly in
the second inning as pitching kept both teams off the bases.
The Lady Bulldogs got a double in the third inning and
converted it into a run on an error to take a 2-0 lead after
three. Again the evening Both teams would
go quietly in the fourth and fifth innings as neither team
threatened to score.
Opp retired Kinston in the sixth and got a runner on base by
way of a Lady Bulldog error, but the threat was short
lived as Kinston retired the next batter to maintain their
two run lead heading into the seventh.
The Lady Bobcats would go down in order in the seventh as
Kinston held on for a 2-0 win.
At the plate Helena Harrison lead the Lady Bobcats going 1
for 3 with the Lady Bobcats only hit of the game. Joi Rhymes
was the only other Lady Bobcat hitter to reach base as she
reached on an error in the sixth. On the mound Sydney Jones
went the distance for Opp giving up just 2 runs neither of
which were earned, 3 hits, with no walks and 5 strikeouts.
Bobcats knocked out by Tigers
TR Miller 8 Opp 5
With
a break in between games and the wind dying down Opp (1-2) played in
their second game on Saturday in the Andalusia Tournament against TR
Miller of Brewton. Earlier in the day Miller had given up a seven
run lead in the last inning to Flomaton High School and lost the
game on the last at bat 11-10. With Opp defeating New Brockton
(STORY BELOW) earlier in the
day the Lady Bobcats would play TR Miller with the winner advancing.
The Lady Bobcats came out in the first inning with the bats moving
as they got two runs on an Adrianne Ellison RBI double to take a 2-0
lead with Miller coming to bat. The Lady Tigers managed to get a
leadoff walk and after a stolen base, a sacrifice, and an error
Miller got a runner across to cut into the Opp lead 2-1 after the
first inning.
The
Lady Bobcats went quietly in the top of the second inning, and then
Miller would 5 unearned runs in the bottom of the second inning on
five costly Lady Bobcat errors including one that cleared the bases
to give Miller a 6-2 lead. Opp would manage to cut into the lead at
6-3 with a run in the top of the third aided by two Miller errors,
but the Lady Tigers responded with two more in the bottom of the
third to take an 8-3 lead after three innings.
With time limits on each game in the Tournament, Opp headed to the
top of the fourth inning with their last chance at a comeback. The
Lady Bobcats got the first two runners on with an Allie Colquett
walk, and a Joi Rhymes single. Adrianne drove both runners in with a
two RBI single to right field with two outs. Miller retired the next
batter and held on for the win 8-5.
The Lady Bobcats were again lead by Sierra Thorn who went 2 for 3
from the plate with a single, a double, and 2 runs scored. Adrianne
Ellison also went 2 for 3 with a single, a double, and 3 RBIs, and
Joi Rhymes went 1 for 3 as she reached on an error, and had a
single, and 2 runs scored. Hanna Harrison went the distance on the
mound for Opp giving up 8 runs, of which only 2 were earned, 4 hits,
3 walks, and a strikeout.
Bobcats dominate Gamecocks
Opp 6 New Brockton 0
A cold and chilling Saturday (March 8) Morning would play a factor
in the Lady Bobcats first game of the Andalusia Tournament as Opp
(1-1) took on New Brockton, but it would be the Lady Gamecocks that
would be hampered by the weather.
After
New Brockton went down 1-2-3 in the top of the first inning the Lady
Bobcats came to bat and went on a tear. Sidney Jones got it started
with a base hit to left field and then the string of errors began
for New Brockton. High throws and fielding errors would stake Opp
out to a commanding 5-0 lead after one inning aided by 4 Lady
Gamecock errors.
Southpaw Sidney Jones was almost unhittable sitting down the Lady
Gamecock hitters followed by a dominate second inning as she struck
out three batters in a row on nine straight pitches. Jones was
on her way to picking up a complete game shutout and her first win
of the year.
Neither team would score in the second or third inning and New
Brockton went quietly in the fourth. The bottom of the fourth inning
would see the Lady Bobcats add another run on a Helena Harrison
triple that turned into an inside the park homerun on New Brockton's
sixth error of the game.
Opp loaded the bases looking to add more until the game was called
with two outs in the bottom of the fourth inning due to a time limit
that was set for each game in the Tournament. Opp picked up
their first win of the season, 6-0.
The Lady Bobcats were led by the hot bat of Sierra Thorn who went 2
for 2 at the plate with 2 singles, a run scored, and was hit by a
pitch. Helena Harrison went 1 for 3 with a triple turned homerun due
to an error, and 2 runs scored. Adrianne Ellison also went 2 for 3
with 2 singles. On the mound Sidney Jones went the distance for Opp
pitching a 2 hit complete game shutout giving up no runs or walks,
and striking out 6 Lady Gamecocks including 3 in a row on 9 pitches.
