Opp 63 - Samson 53
Opp is playing well over the past few
games and could be peaking at the right time with the area
tournament coming up next week. The Bobcats defeated Samson
Monday Night - outscoring the Tigers by ten - 63 - 53.
Mathematically speaking -- Where Rhett Barnes = 24 points;; Donald
Jones = 16 points; and Albert Wilson = 12 points - equates to an Opp
victory moving the Bobcats to 13-10 on the season.
Coach Cassady is excited
about the play of his six plus - "my bench is starting to play well
and their defensively down the stretch has been great".
Offensively the bench had a more productive game against Kinston,
but should help as the Bobcats take on Florala tonight.
Opp 84 -
Kinston 54
The Bobcats put everything together moving back into the win
column - beating a different Bulldog - Kinston 84-54. Everyone
played in the victory and nine of the Bobcat's ten players scored.
The bench gained valuable experience playing the entire 4th quarter.
Todd Lacey = 18 points (3- 3 pointers),
W.C. Lane = 14 points 12 rebounds,
Danshay Edwards = 12 points, Donald Jones = 11 points
The 2 leading scorers came off of the bench and gives Opp 12 wins
and 10 loses for the year!
Opp 41
Ashford 42
Opp played one of its better games January 23 at Ashford but could
not finish and dropped a disappointing 42-41 area game to the Yellow
Jackets. Opp led throughout the game but blew a seven point
lead with 36 seconds to play. The Cats turned the ball over five
times in the last 1:29 after leading 34-24 after three quarters.
Todd Lacey came off the bench and scored eleven points for the
Bobcats.
Albert Wilson played his most complete game and scored ten points.
Opp fell to 11-10 overall with the loss and finished the area race
with an 0-4 worksheet
Opp 32 Andalusia 49
For the third time this year the Bulldogs have defeated the Bobcats.
This past Friday, before a near capacity in the Opp gym, the Dogs
prevailed 49-32. The host Bobcats played hard but points were hard
to come by and after holding a 12-7 lead at the first quarter break,
it was all Andy.
Nico Johnson led the Bulldogs with 16 points and 11 rebounds. Leslie
James added tne and Brandon Sims tacked on twelve. Rhett Barnes and
Donald Jones led the Cats with thirteen and ten respectively. Opp
travels to Ashford Tuesday and then goes to Kinston on Friday.
Daleville 60 - Opp 54
Opp lost to Daleville Friday
night and in the process lost any hopes of hosting the Area 4
Tournament. Daleville led throughout from 6-10 points and posted its
second win over the Cats in a week. Opp rallied to tie the game at
20 at halftime but the War Hawks quickly established themselves
offensively and took the lead for good in the first two minutes of
the second half.
The War Hawks clinched the win in the fourth quarter by canning
19-20 free throws. Opp has not shot well from the perimeter in the
last four games and such was the case last night. Opp is now 11-8
with Andalusia coming to town Friday. Albert Wilson led the Cats
with 16 points while Reggie Jones scored twelve and Rhett Barnes
added eleven.
Ashford at
Opp
Ashford took a leg up on the area 3 race with a 59-51 win over Opp.
The Yellow Jackets came out cooking from the perimeter and never
relented. They built a nine point lead after one quarter and
were never seriously threatened. Ashford led by 13 to 16 points most
of the second half. Guards Mike Ray and Jeremy White rained
down the treys and it proved to be the difference.
Opp got as close as six a couple of times but
could not catch the quicker and bigger Jackets. Fouls also plagued the
Cats as starters Donald Jones, Reggie Jones and DanShay Edwards all fouled
out late. Ray led the winners with 20 while White added 15. Rhett Barnes
led Opp with 17, eleven from the line, while Reggie Jones added eleven and
Donald Jones scored ten. The loss was huge for Opp for now they are
0-2 in the area, with both losses at home. Daleville is 1-0 and Ashford is
also 1-0 in area three. Opp travels to Daleville Tuesday, January 16 and
will play at Andy this Friday.

ELBA
The Opp Bobcats ran its
record to 8-4 with a 43-39 victory over the Elba
Tigers this past Friday in the Opp gymnasium. The win was anything but
easy as the Tigers took the lead in the third quarter and held it
until the
middle stages of the fourth quarter.

night against the Tigers scoring thirteen to
lead the Cats. Junior forward Donald Jones added eleven, including
eight
in the third quarter when point were hardest to come by. Senior Rhett
Barnes added ten to the winning totals. Elba point guard led all

Opp falls on road to Tigers
(12-20)
Red Level trailed for much of the game but
second half pressure on the ball enabled the home standing Tigers to
defeat Opp 47-40. Opp led 17-9 at the end of the first quarter and
24-20 at the half but the Tigers caught up late in the third quarter
and was the better team throughout the final eight minutes of play.
Opp was cold in the second half and did not play with the same zeal
that had earned them consolation honors in the Andalusia Christmas
Tournament.
Ray Knight and Cale Nolen provided the fire power for the winning
Tigers with 17 and 16 respectively. Rhett Barnes led all scorers with
27.
Opp wins two of three in
Andalusia Tournament
The Opp
Bobcats won two of three games in the 40th Annual Andalusia
Invitational Christmas Tournament played December 14-16 on the
Andalusia High School campus. After an opening day, 66-47 win over
Pleasant Home,
the Cats fell to the host Bulldogs 54-46 despite leading most of the
way. Intense pressure in the backcourt force Opp into floor mistakes
and
Andalusia
capitalized by going inside to Nico Johnson.
The strategy erased a six point Bobcat lead and late free throws were
converted by the Dogs. Another factor was Andy's ability to shut down
Rhett Barnes. He scored 14 of Opp's 20 first half points but Coach
Richard Robertson played a gimmick defense geared to stop the senior
guard and it worked. Barnes was held to two in the second half.
Opp downed the Elba Tigers in Saturday's
consolation game. Elba had been blasted in the other semi-final
matchup from Friday night. They fell hard to the Enterprise Wildcats.
(90-47) Opp jumped on the Tigers and led 17-9 after one quarter and
never trailed. Elba cut it to five on one occasion in the fourth
quarter but Opp held on. Junior forward Donald Jones led Opp with 17
while Rhett Barnes added 16. Gavin Repress led the Tigers with nine.

range of Rhett Barnes in the 3rd period to coast in to the

Opp took an early 5-0 lead but the home standing Samson quint went
on a 12-0
run and never trailed again. The Tigers led 16-11 at the break and
24-20 at

made free
throws in the last two minutes broke open what had been a

in the

those
nights where the attempts would not fall.

beating undefeated New Brockton

cold weather - one local team was braving the inside game of
previously undefeated New Brockton (7-0). The Opp Bobcats
turned to leading scorer Rhett Barnes (25) to charge back and tie
the game. New Brockton had an opportunity to win in
regulation, but missed 2 free-throws with no-time on the clock

advantage, but the Bobcats, led by the "downtown" shooting of Barnes -
come back and close the gap at the end of the 3rd quarter 41-42. Both
