Lady Bobcats' Season ends in Sub-Regional

Varsity Girls = Handley 66 Opp 54

For the second year in a row the Opp (18-8) Lady Bobcats had to travel 3 plus hours to play in a Sub-Regional game.  Last year the team traveled to Dadeville this year they would travel to Roanoke to play the Handley (26-2) Lady Tigers.

In last year's game the Lady Bobcats came out and were caught totally off guard by Dadeville this year things were different as it was Opp who came out scoring at the beginning of the game taking a quick 6-0 lead until Handley was able to catch up and make it a 6-5 game as the two teams traded 1 point leads until the end of the first quarter where the Lady Bobcats would lead 16-15.

This would go back and forth throughout the second quarter with neither team leading by more than 4 points as Handley took that into the half at 29-25.

The third quarter scoring was dead even as both teams scored 15 points each for a 44-40 Handley lead after three.

The Lady Bobcats would make it a close game down to the end as they matched the Lady Tigers point for point.  The Lady Bobcats would get no closer than 2 points as they had to begin to foul towards the end of the game.

Handley would make seemingly every free throw down the stretch as they came away with the win 66-54 win to advance to the South Regional in Troy.

The game was won at the free throw line where as Handley shot a whopping 31 for 36 from the line to Opp's 8 of 13.  Fouls would hinder the Bobcats especially in the second half as they were whistled 26 times during the game to Handley's 10.

The Lady Bobcats were lead by Kiara Henderson with 17 points, Mychal Drew had 13 points, and Abby Foster had 11 points.  Handley was lead by Brittany Paige who had 29 points.

The Lady Bobcat Seniors Kiara Henderson, Sharece Stephens, Abby Foster, Joi Rhymes, Stephanie Hickman, and Adrianne Ellison finish their basketball careers at Opp with a record of 68 wins to only 37 losses.

BOBCATS FALL TO ASHFORD
(program23 correspondent - tripp norris)

Varsity Girls = Ashford 51 Opp 49

In one of the most foul happy ballgames Opp (18-7) faced this year their quest for an area championship came up 2 points short.

The Lady Bobcats were whistled 30 times during the game and had four starters foul out with the fifth starter being forced to the sideline with an injury. The game started off very good for Opp scoring the first 5 points of the game as Abby Foster drained a 3 pointer to begin the game and Kiara Henderson hit an easy 2 to make the score 5-0 before Ashford got on the board. The two teams would exchange baskets for the remainder of the quarter as Opp lead 13-11 after one.

The Lady Bobcats kept the momentum going in the second quarter as they made the first basket of the quarter, but the starters began to hit foul trouble as Ashford took the lead at the end of the quarter for a 24-22 lead at the half in favor of the Lady Yellowjackets.

The Lady Bobcats came out cold to start the second half missing several shots to start the half, allowing Ashford to build a 9 point lead midway through the third quarter.  Th Lady Bobcats did not give up and managed to cut the lead to 5 at the end of the third quarter at 39-34.

Opp came out roaring in the final quarter as they managed to tie and then take the lead with 6 minutes remaining, but then the game fell apart for the Lady Bobcats as the Opp starters began to foul out of the game one by one.

Eventually every starter was out of the game as 4 fouled out and 1 was forced out due to an injury. The Lady Bobcats never gave up as they continued to fight for every point. Opp managed to cut the lead to one but an intentional foul with 7 seconds left all but gave the game to Ashford.

The Lady Yellowjackets got two fouls shots plus the ball. Making only 1 of 2 the Ashford lead was at 2 points, as they managed to run out the remaining time to come away with the win 51-49 and the area championship.

The Lady Bobcats were led by Kiara Henderson who had 13 points, Abby Foster and Mychal Drew each had 10 points. Sharece Stephens had 7 points, and Joi Rhymes added 6 points. Navira Bigham led the Lady Yellowjackets with 15 points, and Christina Rogers had 13 points for Ashford.

Varisty Girls = Opp 47 Elba 25

The Opp (18-6) Lady Bobcats were much improved Friday night against Elba than the night before against Florala, as they scored 15 unanswered in the first quarter en route to another win. The Lady Tigers didn't score until the second quarter and would get no closer than 20 points for the entire contest as Opp took a 31-10 lead at the half. The future Lady Bobcat star saw action in the second half as the entire bench saw action in the third and fourth quarters, as Opp extended its lead to 43-17 after three quarters. The Lady Bobcats would cruise to the 47-25 win as they now look ahead to the area tournament championship on February 9. The Lady Bobcats were lead by Kiara Henderson who had 14 points, Abby Foster had 9 points. Joi Rhymes and Mychal Drew each added 6 points.

Bobcats win @ Florala

Varsity Girls = Opp 35 Florala 26

Still reeling from the loss to Samson the Opp (17-6) Lady Bobcats took to the floor last Thursday night against a determined Florala Lady Wildcat team. Opp jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead after two easy baskets by Abby Foster but that was quickly erased by the Lady Wildcats who went on a quick 5-0 run to lead 5-4. Both teams traded baskets for the rest of the quarter as Florala took a 2 point lead after one 15-13. Opp finally came alive in the second quarter as Florala's slim lead was erased in the first minute of the quarter as they Lady Bobcats went on a 6-0 run, but Florala was determined to keep the game close as they battled back to cut the lead to 7 at the break 33-26. The third quarter began with the Lady Bobcats making a quick basket to extend the lead to 9, but that would be the last basket of the night for anyone. With 5:10 remaining the the third quarter the rest of the Girls game along with the Varsity Boys were canceled due to bad weather approaching the area. The games will not be made up due to the area tournament. The Lady Bobcats were lead by Abby Foster who had 15 points, including a pair of threes from downtown. Kiara Henderson had 12 points, and Katelyn Mikel added 4 points.

Bobcats fall to 2A Tigers

Wednesday's game between Opp (16-6) and Samson (18-3) was scheduled two weeks ago, but as soon as the announcement was made all eyes turned towards Samson, Alabama.

The Opp Lady Bobcats are eyeing the postseason and the game with Samson would be a taste of what they will see the deeper into the playoffs they go. The two teams came out and went scoreless for the first 3 minutes of the game until Samson got on the board.

Opp came back and responded as the teams traded baskets for the next 2 minutes until the Lady Tigers got a few stops on defense and converted them into points as Samson took a 17-7 lead after one.

Junior Mychal Drew scored all 7 Lady Bobcat points in the first quarter. The second quarter began the same way with teams trading baskets and fouls until Opp found themselves down by 15, and went on a 17-4 run to end the half cutting the Lady Tiger lead to just 2 points at the break.

Samson came out in the third quarter and scored the first 4 points of the half and extended their lead to 6 after three quarters at 48-42. Foul trouble and free throw shooting would hinder the Lady Bobcats down the stretch as 3 starters would foul out of the game in the fourth quarter leaving the bench to try to make up the difference. Having to foul late in the game the Lady Bobcats put the Lady Tigers at the line and Samson made the necessary free throws to come away with the win 65-54.

Free throws made the difference in the game as Samson went 21 of 31 from the line to Opp's 10 of 27. The Lady Bobcats were lead by Sharece Stephens who had 11 points, Joi Rhymes had 10 points. Abby Foster and Mychal Drew each had 9 points and Kiara Henderson added 8 points. Kala Bess lead the Lady Tigers with 22 points including going 12 of 15 from the line, and Trianna Reeves had 16 points for Samson.

Varsity Girls = Opp 76 New Brockton 6

Last night's Varsity Girls game was over as soon as Opp (16-5) won the opening tip and scored two easy points to begin the rout of the Lady Gamecocks. The Lady Bobcats played about as perfect game as they have all year holding New Brockton to zero points from the floor as all of the Lady Gamecock points came from the foul line. Opp took at 19-1 lead after one quarter and extended that to a 47-4 lead at the half. The Lady Bobcat bench saw most of the action in the second half which was played under continuous clock, as Opp built the lead up to 66-6 after the third quarter, and the bench held New Brockton totally scoreless in the fourth quarter while adding 10 more points to make the final score 76-6. Four Lady Bobcats registered in double figures as Joi Rhymes lead all Lady Bobcat scoring with 16 points, Kiara Henderson had 14 points. Mychal Drew had 13 points, Shaerce Stephens had 10 points, and Adrianne Ellison added 8 points. Anna Beth Sawyer lead the Lady Gamecocks with 3 points, and Monica Largess added 2 points for New Brockton.

Varsity Girls = Opp 81 Kinston 31

The Opp (15-5) seniors went out tonight with a bang as the offense exploded for 81 points tonight against Kinston. Opp took advantage from the opening tipoff and never looked back as 4 senior starters registered in double figures. Opp jumped out to a 26-5 advantage after the first quarter and then built the lead to 40-19 at the break. With most of the bench playing in the second half they were able to match up well with the Lady Bulldog starters as Opp built their lead to 68-26 after three and finished off the game with a final score of 81-31. Four Lady Bobcats registered in double figures as Kiara Henderson lead the way with 19 points. Abby Foster had 12 points, Sharece Stephens had 11 points, and Adrianne Ellison had 10 points.

Varsity Girls = Opp 42, Ashford 31

With Daleville's win over Ashford last Friday the regular season area title was already Opp's (15-4) before the game even started, but the Lady Bobcats wanted to put the exclamation point on the area and go for the perfect 4-0, and they would thanks to a great defensive fourth quarter.

In the first quarter neither team could stop the other as both exchanged baskets for most of the quarter with Opp leading 15-11 after one. The Lady Bobcats would hold Ashford to only 3 second quarter points as they took a 9 point advantage into halftime, 23-14. The Lady Jackets would not go quietly storming back in the third quarter outscoring Opp 12-5 and cutting the Lady Bobcat lead to just 2 entering the fourth quarter.

Opp would turn on the scoring late in the fourth quarter while all five of Ashford's points came early in the quarter and a great Lady Bobcat defense held Ashford scoreless for the last 5 minutes of the game.

The Bobcats pushed the ball up and down the floor and made key baskets down the stretch to pull away and win the game 42-31 to go undefeated in area play.

The Lady Bobcats were lead by Kiara Henderson and Mychal Drew who each had 10 points. Abby Foster and Adrianne Ellison each had 8 points, and Joi Rhymes added 4 points.

Varsity Girls = Opp 30 Andalusia 19

A defensive game that was dead-even for the entire first half gave - seemed whoever had the ball last would win. Opp (13-5) was looking for a little bit of payback tonight against Andalusia (13-8) for the three point loss last week at home.

They would get it in the second half as Andalusia was unable to score anything against a stingy Opp defense. The teams were tied 10-10 after the first quarter and Andalusia start the second quarter implementing a stall with each team only able to score 2 points for a 12-12 tie at half.

Opp took a slim 2 point lead into the fourth at 19-17, but that's when the Bobcat defense took over as they totally shut down the Bulldogs in the fourth quarter holding them to just 2 points.

Taking advantage of Lady Bulldog mistakes and converting them into points Opp pulled away and got the win 30-19.

The Lady Bobcats were lead by Joi Rhymes with 8 points, Kiara Henderson and Mychal Drew each had 7 points, and Abby Foster added 5 points.

Anjelica White paced the Lady Bulldogs with 6 points.

#5 Lady Bobcats 3-0

Varsity Girls = Opp 62 Daleville 46

In a game that started off very slow Opp (12-5) looked like they were never going to get on track against Daleville and in the first half they didn't. Opp did maintain the lead throughout the first quarter taking a 5 point lead after one at 14-9. Daleville then took over the second quarter putting in a scare into the Lady Bobcats as Daleville took a 24-21 lead into the half.

Opp would then respond in the third quarter scoring the first 12 points of the half and taking back control of the game. Daleville's leading player was called for a 3rd personal foul and as she was leaving the game comments towards the officials earned her a technical foul and she would not return to the game.

The Lady Bobcats took full advantage in the fourth quarter and pulled away from the Lady Warhawks scoring almost at will. Daleville battled to the finish but with their best player on the bench it would not be enough as the Lady Bobcats picked up the area win 62-46.

Abby Foster lead the Lady Bobcats with 13 points, while both Mychal Drew and Adianne Ellison had 10 each. Joi Rhymes had 8, Kiara Henderson had 7, and Sharece Stephens added 6.

Varsity Girls = Andalusia 61 Opp 58

After defeating Ashford on Tuesday night Opp (11-5) came out strong against Andalusia (12-6) tonight taking a 16-9 lead after the first quarter.  The second quarter saw Andalusia come alive as they scored 27 points in the quarter and took an 8 point lead into the half at 36-28.  The second half saw Opp score 7 straight points before Andalusia got on the board as the teams battled to a tie at the end of the third quarter.  The quarter ended with the officials watching the clock and the goal none of the three were watching the Andy player launching a desperation three pointer and the in the process fell down to the floor without any contact. The shot was missed and one of the officials called Opp for a personal foul giving Andalusia free throws to end the third quarter.

Andy made all three and proved to be the difference in the game as both teams scored equally in the fourth quarter giving Andalusia a 61-58 victory.

Kiara Henderson lead the Bobcats with 24 points, while Mychal Drew had 11. Sharece Stephens had 11, and Abby Foster added 5.

Lady Bobcats roll over YellowJackets
(Opp 65 Ashford 52)
(program23 correspondent - tripp norris)

Tuesday's game was the matchup that Opp (11-4) had been looking forward to since the end of last season as Ashford (13-2) defeated Opp 3 times last year. This year things would be different as the Bobcats came out with something to prove.

Ashford lost 4 starters and the coach from last year's state runner up team and the Lady Bobcat team remained intact.  Opp built a 9 and 10 point lead in the first quarter and it would remain that way throughout the game thanks to great free throw shooting by the Lady Bobcats.

Ashford would manage to cut the lead in the second half to as many as 6 but the Bobcats would turn them away each time and build the lead back up to 9-10. With time winding down in the fourth quarter Ashford began to foul and the Bobcats made clutch free throws and managed to pull away and come out with the big 65-52 win.

Sharece Stephens had a career night leading the Lady Bobcats with 22 points. Abby Foster had 13 and Mychal Drew added 10.

Varsity Girls = Opp 55 Daleville 27

Tonight's girls game between Opp (10-4) and Daleville started out back and forth game in the first half before Opp turned it into a rout in the second half. The Lady Bobcats came out and focused on stopping Daleville's Kendra McKinney who scored 17 of Daleville's 27 points. The first quarter would see a back and forth battled between her and Opp's Kiara Henderson as the Lady Bobcats lead 13-9 after the first quarter. The second quarter saw Daleville take the lead momentarily at 17-16 but what followed was a 10-0 Opp run to end the half. Up by 9 points the Lady Bobcats did not stop in the second half as they continued to pile on the points as they built the lead to 15 entering the final quarter. Daleville's one girl show was no match for Lady Bobcats team as Opp held Daleville to only 2 fourth quarter points en route to the 55-27 area win. Kiara Henderson lead the Lady Bobcats with 14 points, Abby Foster had 13. Mychal Drew had 7 and Katlyn Mikel added 6.

Lady Bobcats 72 Kinston 25

The girls game between Opp (9-4) and Kinston was over about as soon as the first set of free throws were made by Opp in the early moments of the game as Kinston was held completely scoreless in the first quarter 29-0. The rest of the game was played primarily by the Opp bench as the scoring was spread around throughout the game for Opp with each member of the Lady Bobcat roster registered at least 2 points. Opp rolled to the 72-25 win and their second straight championship in the Opp Tournament. Kiara Henderson lead the Lady Bobcats with 13 points and Abby Foster had 12. Mychal Drew had 9 and Tournament MVP Sharece Stephens added 8.

Opp 62 Elba 28

The girl's side of the tournament is Opp's (8-4) to lose and last night the Lady Bobcats took care of business as usual. After the big win over Paxton last week and a long layoff the Lady Bobcats were slow to start this game as both teams went scoreless for the first 3 minutes of the game and then the Lady Bobcats found their rhythm and began to take it to the Lady Tigers scoring the game's first 9 points in a foul happy first half as Opp and Elba combined for 27 first half fouls. Opp lead 38-15 at half and the bench saw action in the second half. Good defense by Opp in the second half limited Elba to only 13 second half points en route to a 62-28 win. Sharece Stephens lead the Lady Bobcats with 12 points, Soyia Folmar had 9, and Mychal Drew had 8. Adrianne Ellison had 7 and Joi Rhymes and Helena Harrison each added 6.

Lady Bobcats tangle with Bobcats

Varsity Girls = Opp 57 Paxton 32

Tonight's battle of the Bobcats game between Opp (7-4) and Florida 1A #3 Paxton (9-3) was a tale of two halves as the Opp Lady Bobcats came into the game ready for the test from the Paxton Lady Bobcats. Opp came storming out of the gate and made an easy bucket from the opening tipoff and jumped out to a 10 point lead before Paxton got on the board but once they did they took off going on a 20-5 run to end the half.

Down by 5 at the half Opp came out and took total control of the 2nd half. Looking like a championship team they picked up the pace of the game beating Paxton up and down the floor using their quickness to their advantage as Opp outscored Paxton an amazing 42-12 en route to a 25 point win 57-32 in a game most thought would be close. Joi Rhymes lead Opp with 17 points, Kiara Henderson had 16. Sharece Stephens and Mychal Drew each added 9.

Junior Varsity Girls = Paxton 40 Opp 14

With only two days of practice for the Opp JV girls which was comprised of mostly junior high players and high school freshman they Opp JV team never got on track against a seasoned Paxton Junior Varsity team. The game would belonged to Paxton from the opening tipoff to the final buzzer as Paxton cruised to a 40-14 win. Future Opp Lady Bobcats got their first real taste of high school basketball against one of the best teams in Florida.

This was a good learning experience as several underclassmen will have to fill the void in the 2008-2009 season. The Opp Lady Bobcat team will graduate seven Seniors from this year's squad.

Varsity Girls = Opp 55 Red Level 23

Following the heartbreaking loss to Enterprise last week the Opp (6-4) Lady Bobcats had a week to prepare for the Red Level (4-7) Lady Tigers. The Lady Bobcats got off to a slow start but managed to pick it up scoring 14 points in each of the first two quarters and took a 16 point lead into the half at 28-12. The Lady Bobcats turned up the pressure in the second half and extended their lead to 30 points in the 4th quarter and picked up the win by the final score of 55-23. The Lady Bobcats spread the scoring around tonight as Abby Foster lead the Lady Bobcats with 13 points. Sharece Stephens and Joi Rhymes each had 8, Kiara Henderson had 5. Adrianne Ellison, Mychal Drew and Stephanie Hickman each added 4.

Varsity Boys Story

Varsity Girls = Enterprise 43 Opp 39

As anticipated the girl's game would come down to the wire as a much improved Opp (5-4) team looked to exact revenge on Enterprise (7-2) from the loss earlier this season, and things were going well for the Lady Bobcats in the first quarter as Opp managed to build up a 10 point lead with some heard earn baskets against a physical Lady Wildcat team. In the process however, Enterprise had managed to used its chances at the foul line to cut into the Bobcat lead and to tied the game at halftime at 22 all. The second half started much like the first as Opp came out and scored 8 quick points and lead by 8 midway through the third quarter, and held a 5 point lead going into the final quarter. In the final quarter the Wildcats were able to catch up thanks to 2 three pointers and the gift of being in the bonus like in the first half. Opp continued to lead until the final 2 minutes as Enterprise tied the game on a three pointer and then took the lead for good with 1 minute to play. The Lady Bobcats were down by as many as 5 but a clutch three pointer by Sharece Stephens cut it to 2. Enterprise was unable to inbound the ball and turned it over but the Bobcats would miss their opportunity as the Lady Wildcats grabbed the rebound and sank 2 more free throws to hold on to the 43-39 win. The Lady Bobcats were lead by Abby Foster with 9 points.
Kiara Henderson and Mychal Drew each added 8, along with Sharece Stephens and Adrianne Ellison who each added 5.

Varsity Boys Story

Girls = Opp 64 Red Level 27

The Opp (5-3) Lady Bobcats picked up last night where they left off the night before in Georgiana and played even better as they took on much improved Red Level (3-6) Lady Tiger team. This night however, would belong to Opp as they jumped out to a 22-4 lead after the 1st quarter and Red Level would get no closer. The Lady Bobcats played like state title contender for the entire game as the bench played most of the 2nd half and were able to match up well with Red Level's starters holding them to just 14 second half points. The Lady Bobcats were lead by Abby Foster with 14 points including going 8 for 9 at the foul line, Sharece Stephens had 12 points, Joi Rhymes and Helena Harrison each had 9 points, and Kiara Henderson added 8.

Bobcats Boys Fall - Girls Win

Varsity Boys Story

Girls = Opp 58 Georgiana 36

The Lady Bobcats (4-3) played perhaps their best game as a team last night against a tough Lady Panther (4-4) team. The game started with a pair of buckets by each team and then Opp lead by point leader Kiara Henderson took over as the Bobcats built a 10 point lead after the first quarter. That lead would increase to 20 points by halftime as Opp lead 30-10 at the break. The rest of the game was played mostly by the Opp bench who still managed to match Georgiana point for point as Opp outscored the Panther 28-26 in the 2nd half en route to the 58-36 victory. Kiara Henderson led all scorers with 22 points, Abby Foster had 11 including a pair of threes, Mychal Drew and Helena Harrison each added 6.

Lady Bobcats start off slow

The Opp Bobcats got off to a slow start to the 2007-2008 season losing their first two to Dothan and Northview in their opening week.  The larger 6A schools were just to much for the 4A Lady Bobcats who dropped the pair 47-31 (Dothan) and 85-47 (Northview).

The Lady Bobcats got back into the win column by demolishing Volleyball power in Basketball winning 76-11 over 1A Kinston.
