Ashford ends Bobcats' season

Varsity Boys = Ashford 77 Opp 58

With Ashford and Daleville tying in area wins this year a coin flip had to be made to determine who got to host the area tournament and who would have to play Opp (6-17) in the semi final game Friday night. Daleville won the toss and got to host so Opp would play Ashford for the right to go to the Area Championship the following Monday.

Opp and Ashford exchanged baskets in the first quarter as the score remained close with Ashford taking a 1 point lead with just .9 seconds remaining. A tipped basket by Ashford's leading scorer DC Condrey made the game 16-13 after one quarter.

In second quarter Ashford's DC Condrey and Mike Ray seemed to score every time they touched the ball as seemingly neither missed a shot the entire quarter helping Ashford open the lead to 13 at the half 41-28.

The Yellowjackets came out in the second half and scored 8 points quickly before the Bobcats got on the board in the third as Ashford blew the game open taking a 64-41 lead after three quarters. The fourth quarter would see Ashford extend the lead to 30 points at 76-46 but the Bobcats would not quit going on an 12-1 run to end the game including a buzzer beater shot by WC Lane to end the game, but it was Ashford winning by the score of 77-58 thus ending Opp's season.

The Bobcats were lead by Gavin Free with 16 points, Albert Wilson had 13 points, and Donald Jones added 11 points. Ashford had 54 of their 77 points scored by 2 people, with DC Condrey leading the Yellowjackets with 29 points, and Mike Ray had 25 points.

Varsity Boys = Opp 44 Elba 31

Opp (6-16) and Elba took to the floor last Friday night for their third meeting this year. Elba had won the first two meetings including the buzzbeater that gave Elba the Opp X-Mas Tournament. The game last Friday would be much different as the Bobcats came out and played one of their best games of the year. Both teams got 2 baskets quickly for a 4-4 tie early on, but after that Opp took control of the game and never let go taking a 9-6 after one. The second quarter saw Opp beat Elba up and down the floor scoring or going to the line on every trip down the floor as the Bobcats doubled up the Tigers 14-7 to take a 23-13 lead at the half. The Bobcat defense held the Tigers in check the rest of the game as Elba would get no closer than 10 points the rest of the contest. The Bobcats came away with the win 44-31 to end the regular season. The Bobcats were lead by Donald Jones who had 12 points, Albert Wilson had 11 points. Erwin Spears had 6 points, and Gavin Free and Curtis Matthews had 5 points each. Keena Phillips lead the Tigers with 8 points, and Jason Mitchell added 7 points for Elba.

B-Team Boys = Opp 44 Elba 21

The Opp (10-8) B-Team looked to end their season on a 5 game winning streak as they took on Elba for the first time this season. Both teams got quick buckets to start the game at 2-2 as Opp then turned on the defense holding the Tigers scoreless while going on an 11-0 before Elba made the last 5 points in the quarter for a 13-7 Bobcat lead after one. The second quarter was all Bobcats as they made every shot they took and the Tigers could hit nothing as Opp outscored Elba 16-2 in the second to take a commanding 29-9 lead at the half. The third quarter would be more of the same as Opp held Elba to just 2 points again while scoring 9 to take a 38-11 lead into the fourth. Elba would manage 10 points in the fourth but it would not be near enough to catch Opp as the B-Team won 44-21. The B-Team Bobcats were lead by Britt Wilson who has 11 points including 2 three pointers. Tyler Harrison and Quadir Kincaid each had 10 points, and Justin Furgeson added 4 points.

B-Team wins @ Florala

B-Team = Opp 28 Florala 24

The B-Team game was a tale of two halves as Opp (9-8) won the first half and Florala won the second half. The first quarter was a defense battle as both teams ran their offenses very well and played well defending the other. Neither team could get a shot to fall as Opp took a slim 4-2 lead after one. The second quarter would see the Bobcats rack up 13 points to Florala's 2 to take a commanding lead at the half at 17-4. The second half started out very differently as the Bobcats became cautious and Florala began to score at will quickly getting back into the game as they cut the Bobcat lead down to 6 entering the fourth quarter 19-13. The final quarter saw Florala charge to attempt to take the lead, but were turned away each time. Florala managed to cut the lead to just a single point, but had to begin fouling to extend the game. The Bobcats made the clutch free throws that they needed to secure the 4 point win 28-24. The B-Team Bobcats were lead by Tyler Harrison who had 14 points, Steadman Gerber had 6 points, and Richard Davis added 5 points.

Varsity Boys = New Brockton 52 Opp 43

Last night Opp (5-16) tried to make it 3 for 3 against New Brockton for the year, but it was not to be on this night. New Brockton would take control of the game in the first quarter scoring the first 4 points of the game and taking a 15-8 lead after one quarter. The second quarter would see the Bobcats cut the lead to as little as 6 on three seperate occasions but could get no closer as the Gamecocks took a 25-16 lead into the half. The Gamecocks continued to lead on the scoreboard as they outscored the Bobcats 15-9 in the third to lead 40-25 going into the fourth. The Bobcats would make some noise in the fourth scoring 18 to New Brockton's 12 but there was not enough time remaining as the Bobcats began to foul to extend the game and New Brockton made free throws to stay ahead and come away with the win 52-43. The Bobcats were lead by Gavin Free who had 13 points including 6 of 6 from the foul line. Albert Wilson had 9 points, and Donald Jones added 8 points. Shambray Johnson lead the Gamecocks with 20 points.

B-Team Boys = Opp 41 New Brockton 27

The Opp (8-8) B-Team got another win last night behind good defense and clutch free throw shooting. Opp got off to the fast start scoring the game's first 6 points and took a 6 point lead after one quarter 10-4. Defense was key in the second quarter as Opp was held to only 4 points and New Brockton 2 as the Bobcats took a 14-6 lead into the half. The second half saw both teams provide some offense as Opp managed to maintain their lead 26-20 after three quarters. The Bobcats managed to withstand a Gamecock attempt at a comeback as New Brockton drained 5 from downtown in the second half but it would not be enough as great free throw shooting by Opp made the difference as the Bobcats went on to win 41-27. The B-Team Bobcats were lead by Tyler Harrison who had 12 points including 6 of 6 from the foul line. Steadman Gerber had 10 points, and Richard Davis added 8 points. Kevin Edwards lead the Gamecocks B-Team with 8 points.

Varsity Boys = Opp 59 Kinston 44

Tonight's Varsity Boys game was a little bit closer than the final score indicates. Opp (5-15) and Kinston waged war for 3.5 quarters until a technical foul turned the tide in Opp's favor and the Bobcats took full advantage. Both teams battled pretty evenly in the first half as Opp took a 12-9 lead after one quarter and a 24-19 point lead at the break. Kinston fought back in the second half taking the lead late in the third quarter, but Opp scored at the end of the quarter to lead by 1 point heading into the fourth 33-32. With about 6 minutes to go in the game it seemed like the Bulldogs had gained all the momentum as a behind the back pass was converted into 2 points and Kinston took the lead 42-41, but that momentum was quickly erased in a matter of 10 seconds. Following the layup Opp in bounded the ball and Kinston Center Timothy Donaldson was whistled for his 5 foul leaving the court he kicked the bleachers resulting in a technical foul and awarding Opp 2 more foul shots in addition to the 2 caused by his personal foul. Opp, who was 3 of 21 from the line at that point made all 4 free throws and took the lead for good. Kinston's momentum was gone and they were never the same the rest of the game as Opp made seemingly every shot they took, blowing the game open in route to a win 59-44. The Bobcats were lead by Albert Wilson who had 23 points, and big man Curtis Matthews added 14 points.

B-Team Boys = Opp 47 Kinston 27

The first meeting of the B-Team between Opp (7-8) and Kinston went down to a last second shot in overtime, but that was the first game of the season. The game tonight saw a much better Bobcat B-Team going up against the same Kinston from earlier in the year. The first quarter was dead even as both teams scored 9 points each ending with a 9-9 tie after one. That would where the Bobcats took over as they went on a 6-0 run to begin the second quarter to take a 9 point lead into the half at 23-14. Opp took a double digit lead in the third and Kinston wouldn't be a threat the rest of the game as Opp came away with a big win 47-27. The B-Team Bobcats were lead by Steadman Gerber who had 14 points, Richard Davis had 8 points, and Britt Wilson added 7 points.

Ashford drops Varsity

(program23 correspondent - tripp norris)

Varsity Boys = Ashford 61 Opp 52

With one last chance to secure an area win this season Opp (4-15) and Ashford played a hard fought even first half as Ashford led by 1 after the first quarter and Opp lead by 1 at the half.

With only 8 Bobcats playing the night, Opp began to fatigue in the third quarter as they were unable to stop Ashford's D C Condrey who hit 3 from downtown in the third to give Ashford an 8 point lead heading into the fourth 48-40.

The Yellowjackets would extend the lead to double digits in the fourth but the Bobcats would not let up trying to battle back.  There just wasn't enough time left in the game as Opp only cut it to as close as 9 points and Ashford won 61-52.

The Bobcats were lead by Lavarous Colston who had 11 points, W C Lane had 9 points. Erwin Spears and Todd Lacey each had 8 points and Albert Wilson and Gavin Free each added 5 points.

B-Team Boys = Opp 30 Ashford 29

The B-Team game between Opp (6-8) and Ashford was a back and forth contest in which it seemed like when one team scored - so did the other one in exactly the same manner - whether free throws, three pointers, or shots from the field.

Opp took a 6-3 after the first, but that lead disappeared at the closing seconds of the half when Ashford made a 3 pointer as time ran out to give the Yellowjackets a 1 point lead at the half 14-13. Opp re-took the lead at the end of the third quarter by 1 point, 21-20, and both teams would score 9 points each in the 4th quarter highlighted by Britt Wilson's game winning shot with 11 seconds left.

Ashford turned the ball over on the next inbound and Opp held on for the 1 point win 30-29. The B-Team Bobcats were lead by Britt Wilson who had 12 points, Richard Davis had 7 points. Steadman Gerber and Quadir Kincaid each had 4 points and Tyler Harrison added 3 points.

Andalusia wins second over Opp
(Lady Bobcats get win)
(program23 correspondent - tripp norris)

Varsity Boys = Andalusia 53 Opp 27

Before the games started tonight Opp (4-14) was already shorthanded with two players sick one out of the state and one sitting out the first half for disciplinary action, the Bobcats dressed only seven players against #2 Andalusia (15-4) with only six of them playing in the first half and the boys gave 110% as they managed to lead the Bulldogs the whole first quarter. A desperation three pointer by the Bulldogs found the bottom of the net to tie the score 11-11. That seemed to turn the tide as fatigue set in for the Bobcats and Andalusia pulled away in the second quarter to lead 27-13 at the half.

The second half scoring would be about the same as the first with Andalusia scoring 26 and Opp 14 for a final score of 53-27.

The Bobcats were lead by Gavin Free with 10 points, Curtis Matthews had 5 points, and Erwin Spears and W C Lane had 4 points each.

B-Team = Andalusia 41 Opp 31

The B-Team game tonight saw Opp (5-8) miss several shots in the first quarter that would eventually be the difference in the game. Andalusia went up 8-2 after the first quarter and took a 10 point lead into the half at 23-13. The teams were dead even in the second half as each team scored 7 in the third and 11 in the fourth and Andalusia held on to win 41-31. The B-Team Bobcats were lead by Richard Davis with 11 points, Steadman Gerber had 9 points, and Britt Wilson added 5 points.

Varsity Boys = Daleville 43 Opp 36

Tonight's game between Opp (4-13) and Daleville (4-12) would go a long way to determine who would host area tournament and who would play whom in the semi final round game.

The game started off as a back and forth contest as expected as Daleville took a slim 1 point lead at the end of the first quarter 9-8. The Bobcats then went cold as ice in the second quarter missing opportunities from open jumpers to simple layups but good defense kept them in the game as they only trailed by 3 points at 17-14 going into halftime.

The Bobcats cold streak would continue in the second half for the rest of the game as Daleville made shots where the Bobcats continued to miss. Opp got to within 7 points, but that was how the game would end as Daleville won 43-36 taking the lead in the area in the process.

Albert Wilson lead the Bobcats with 13 points, while Donald Jones had 7, and Lavorous Colston added 4.

Lady Bobcats 3-0 in area -pick up win

B-Team Boys = Opp 35 Daleville 26

The last B-Team game between Opp (5-7) and Daleville came down to the final shot with Daleville making the final basket as time ran out. The Bobcats were out to avenge that defeat and they would.

The first quarter saw a defensive battle as neither team attempted many shots but the ones that were went in as Daleville took the lead 6-5 after one quarter. Opp would then take over claiming the lead midway through the second quarter and would never give it up the rest of the game holding off each Warhawk attempt at a run.

Opp ran the lead to double digits in the fourth quarter and won the game by 9 points 35-26. Steadman Gerber lead the Bobcats with 8 points, and Quadir Kincaid had 7. Britt Wilson, Tyler Harrison, and Richard Davis each added 6.

Varsity Boys = Andalusia 67 Opp 46

The Varsity Boys game tonight between Opp (4-12) and Andalusia started out with Andy's usual fast pace up and down the floor game which benefited them well in the first quarter as they took a commanding lead 24-5 after one. The rest of the game would see a slower pace as this is more to the pace the Bobcats prefer to play. The Bulldogs lead 47-18 at the half but the Bobcats did not quit outscoring Andalusia 28-20 in the second half, but the Bulldog lead was too much to overcome as Andalusia won 67-46. The Bobcat scoring was spread throughout the roster as Lavarous Colston and Tyriss Lane lead the Bobcat scoring with 10 points each. W C Lane had 5 and four Bobcat players Erwin Spears, Gavin Free, Todd Lacey, and Donald Jones each added 4.

Andalusia's Brandon Sims paced the Bulldogs with 23 and Nico Johnson posted 16 for the 13-4 Bulldogs.

Lady Bobcats drop fifth

B-Team Boys = Andalusia 40 Opp 23

Opp (4-7) came out in the B-Team game and started off very cold missing several shots and going the whole first quarter without a field goal as their only points came from the foul line as Andalusia took a commanding lead after one at 16-1. Opp would get on the board in the second as they put up 12 points to Andy's 8.

The second half saw Opp start off making two field goals to pull to within 5 but they would get no closer as Andalusia pulled away in the fourth for the win 40-23. Tyler Harrison lead the Bobcats with 6 points, while Quadir Kincaid had 5. Richard Davis and Steadman Gerber each had 4 and Brit Wilson added 3.

(program23 correspondent - tripp norris)

Ashford 52 Opp 46 (OT)

Tuesday's Varsity game between Opp (4-11) and Ashford (14-8) was a defensive battle through the game and would have to be settled in overtime.

Both teams struggled to make any baskets from the field in the first half as Ashford took a 5 point lead into the half 17-12. Both teams showed signs of life in the third quarter as they both were able to score in double figures with Ashford outscoring Opp 14-11.

The fourth quarter belonged to the Bobcats as they clawed their way into a 41-41 tie with 8 seconds remaining and attempted to try to win the game until a controversial back court violation was called on Opp giving Ashford the ball, but their attempt to win the game also failed so the game remained deadlocked at 41-41.

The overtime would belong to Ashford as they scored 7 straight points before Opp got on the board and held on for the 52-46 win.

Albert Wilson, Lavarous Colston, and Donald Jones each had 10 points to lead the Bobcat scoring. Tyriss Lane, W C Lane, and Curtis Matthews each added 4.

B-Team Boys = Ashford 47 Opp 39

The B-Team game started out very good for Opp (4-6) as they scored 8 points before Ashford was able to get on the board, but the YellowJackets managed to scored 13 unanswered to end the quarter and took a 13-8 lead after the first quarter.

Opp's defense took over in the second quarter as they held Ashford to only 2 points while the Bobcats scored 10 and lead 18-15 at the half. The second half would belong to Ashford as they retook the lead for good in the third quarter and held on for an 8 point win 47-39.

Tyler Harrison lead the Bobcats with 13 points, and Richard Davis had 10. Steadman Gerber had 6 and Quadir Kincaid added 4.

Warhawks defeat Bobcats
(program23 correspondent - tripp norris)

Opp (4-10) began the second half of the season and area play tonight in Daleville against the previously winless Warhawks. The game started out in Opp favor as the Bobcats went on a 8-0 run to start the game and lead 13-8 after the first quarter. Daleville managed to tie the game at the half at 23-23 and the game would remain dead even after three quarters as well at 34-34. The final quarter was even until the final two minutes when Opp began getting called for a series of fouls in which Daleville was able to go to the line and eventually take the lead and hold on for the five point win 55-50. The foul ratio was 11-2 in Daleville's favor in the second half. The Bobcats were lead by Albert Wilson who had 12 points, Gavin Free had 11. Todd Lacey had 9 and W C Lane added 8.

B-Team Boys = Daleville 33 Opp 32

The Opp (4-5) B-Team came off of a 3 week layoff tonight and it showed as the Bobcats only managed 1 point in the entire first quarter and trailed 8-1 after one. The teams would go about even in the second quarter as Daleville took a 19-7 into the half. The Bobcats came out in the second half and cut the lead to 4 twice in the third quarter and then clawed back to take the lead in the fourth quarter with about two minutes remaining. This game would come down to who had the ball last as the team exchanged one point leads for the next minute. The B-Team like the Varsity so many times already this year was hit with a buzzer beater shot as Daleville sank a jump shot at the buzzer to come away with a one point win 33-32. Steadman Gerber lead the Bobcats with 12 points, while Tyler Harrison added 9, and Quadir Kincaid chipped in with 4.

Lady Bobcats keep winning

Bobcats 1-1 in Tournament
(Lady Bobcats 2-0)

Opp 46 Kinston 44

Tonight's Varsity Boys game would determine the runner up in the Opp Tournament as both teams had fallen to Elba the previous two nights. Opp (4-9) came out and scored 9 straight points including a three pointer and two foul shots to take a 9-0 lead before Kinston got on the board. Kinston did manage to respond but the Bobcats matched them point for point and maintained a 9 point lead at the half 27-18. The third quarter would belong to Kinston as they outscored Opp 14-7 thanks to 3 three pointers in the quarter to cut the Bobcat lead to only 2 heading into the final quarter. Tied at 44-44 the Bobcats found this situation very familar except they had the ball this time with the clock winding down and with just 4.5 second left it was the Bobcats who made the winning shot this time. An attempt by Kinston to tie the game was no good and Opp held on for the win 46-44. Gavin Free lead the Bobcats with 12 points, W C Lane had 9. Lavorous Colston had 7, and Albert Wilson added 6.

Elba 44 Opp 42

With only three teams in this year's Opp Christmas tournament last night's game between Elba and Opp (3-9) would probably determine the winner on the boy's side. The game was a close as expected and came down to the wire with the two teams being so even. Opp jumped out to an early 8-0 but it eventually became 10-8 in favor of Elba within minutes as Elba maintained a 1-6 point lead throughout the contest. The Bobcats fought back to tie it in the 4th quarter and this one like so many Opp games this year was decided on the final play. With the game tied at 42-42 the Bobcats were on the recieving end of another buzzer beater shot as time ran out for the third time this year (Florala, Red Level) giving Elba the win 44-42. W C Lane lead the Bobcats with 12 points, Albert Wilson had 9. Lavarous Colston had 6 points and Gavin Free added 5.

Lady Bobcats win over Tigers

Varsity Boys = Red Level 48 Opp 46

Opp (3-8) returned home hoping to turn things around after going 1-2 in the Andalusia Tournament last weekend, but Monday Night they would fall to Red Level (5-3) in another close game.  Missed free throws and layups contributed to the Bobcats demise, as both teams started out slow and maintained a slow pace until the half when the Tigers took a 5 point lead into the locker room 24-19. The Bobcats showed signs of life in the third as they managed to cut the Tiger lead to one after three quarters. The Bobcats gained momentum in the 4th and lead by as many as 5 points but the Tigers chipped away and clutch free throw shooting gave them a 2 point lead with 4 seconds left. The Bobcats last chance failed as a bad pass was thrown right into the hands of a Tiger player and Red Level held on for the 2 point win, 48-46.

Lavorous Colston paced the Bobcats with 14 points including 2 threes from downtown. Gavin Free had 10 and Albert Wilson added 8.

B-Team Boys = Opp 35 Red Level 29

The Opp (4-4) B-Team gained a bit of revenge from their December 7th loss at Red Level (5-3) winning, 35-29. The Bobcats held the lead the entire game jumping out to a 6-0 and Red Level would not get any closer than 4 the rest of the night. The B-Team extended the lead to 12 in the 4th quarter and saw Red Level cut it to 4 twice before making free throws at the line to secure the 6 point win.

Bobcats fall to 6A Wildcats
(Program23 Correspondent - Tripp Norris)

Varsity Boys = Enterprise 78 Opp 47

The Varsity Boys game between Opp (2-5) and Enterprise started off with the Wildcats playing zone defense throughout the first half and the Bobcats were able to stay with Enterprise point for point only trailing by 6 at the end of the first quarter. The second quarter Opp managed to pull to within 4 points twice thanks to free throw shooting and the Wildcats inablility to make any from the foul line, but lead by 12 at the half. The second half Enterprise went to man to man defense and began to pull away. The Wildcats lead by 15 after three quarters and hit 4 three pointers in a row to start the final quarter and enroute winning the game 78-47. Albert Wilson and Donald Jones lead the Bobcat scoring with 12 points each.
Lavorous Colston had 10 and Tyriss Lane added 6.

Varsity Girls = Enterprise 43 Opp 39

As anticipated the girl's game would come down to the wire as a much improved Opp (5-4) team looked to exact revenge on Enterprise (7-2) from the loss earlier this season, and things were going well for the Lady Bobcats in the first quarter as Opp managed to build up a 10 point lead with some heard earn baskets against a physical Lady Wildcat team. In the process however, Enterprise had managed to used its chances at the foul line to cut into the Bobcat lead and to tied the game at halftime at 22 all. The second half started much like the first as Opp came out and scored 8 quick points and lead by 8 midway through the third quarter, and held a 5 point lead going into the final quarter. In the final quarter the Wildcats were able to catch up thanks to 2 three pointers and the gift of being in the bonus like in the first half. Opp continued to lead until the final 2 minutes as Enterprise tied the game on a three pointer and then took the lead for good with 1 minute to play. The Lady Bobcats were down by as many as 5 but a clutch three pointer by Sharece Stephens cut it to 2. Enterprise was unable to inbound the ball and turned it over but the Bobcats would miss their opportunity as the Lady Wildcats grabbed the rebound and sank 2 more free throws to hold on to the 43-39 win. The Lady Bobcats were lead by Abby Foster with 9 points.
Kiara Henderson and Mychal Drew each added 8, along with Sharece Stephens and Adrianne Ellison who each added 5.

B-Team = Enterprise 33 Opp 20

The Opp (3-4) B-Team boys sank into a hole early in the first quarter and were never able to recover, as Enterprise jumped out to a 8-1 lead and held a 10-3 after the first quarter. The rest of the game was played evenly as the Wildcats lead by only 8 at the half 18-10. The Bobcats only managed 3 points in the third quarter but did score evenly with the Wildcats in the fourth as both team scored 7 points each in the final quarter as Enterprise won 33-20.
Steadman Gerber lead the Bobcats with 9 points, Brit Wilson had 6 and Quadir Kincaid added 4.

Varsity Boys = Red Level 52 Opp 47

The Opp/Red Level Varsity Boys games each year are usually tight and come down the 4th quarter. The game last night was no different. Red Level (3-3) used its opportunities given at the foul line to earn the five point win over Opp (2-4) last night. The two teams only combined for 15 points in the first quarter as they tried to get the feel for one another. The 2nd quarter was totally different as both team scored in double digits capped off by Albert Wilson buzzer beater to cut the Tiger lead to just 3 points at the break. The third quarter belonged to the Bobcats as they chipped away at the Tiger lead and managed to tie the game at 35 all entering the final quarter. The 4th quarter would be a close quarter as each team exchanged a 1 point lead until the Tigers managed to mount a 4 point lead with a minute remaining. Opp managed to cut it to 2 with less than a minute to play but then had to begin fouling and the Tigers made the neccessary free throws to win by the score of 52-47. The Bobcats were lead by Albert Wilson with 16 points, Tyriss Lane added 8, and Lavorous Colston chipped in with 7.

B-Team Boys = Red Level 46 Opp 32

Opp managed to cut it to 4 at the half, but Red Level extended it to 8 after a 4-0 run to end the 3rd. The Bobcats tried to cut into the lead in the 4th but Red Level responded each time and pulled away late to win 46-32. Steadman Gerber lead Opp with 8 points, Tyler Harrison had 7, and Richard Davis 6. Zane Christian chipped in with 5 and Quadir Kincaid added 4.
