Bise signs with Faulkner

After a senior season of collecting nearly 2,800 all purpose yards - 1300 receiving with 18 touchdowns, 1000 return yards and nearly 400 yards rushing - Danny Bise has signed to play football with Faulkner University.

Faulkner's newly hired Offensive Coach Gregg Baker was in Florala Wednesday to get Bise's signature and spoke with those in attendance about Danny's role in next year's offense.  "Faulkner is fortunate to have a player of Danny's caliber still available - Memphis's loss is Faulkner's gain" stated the Eagles Coach.  Danny had been highly recruited by Memphis, but elected to stay closer to home and attend the Montgomery school.

"I'm excited with a chance to play close to home and about the program's direction" said Bise.  "[Faulkner] will be joining the Mid-South conference next year and our first game will be in the Crampton Bowl."

Faulkner competes in the NAIA and went 1-9 last season in their first year of existence.  The school joins a new conference and will also be eligible for post season play after the 2008 football year.  Baker is new to Faulkner and was the head coach at 4A Alabama Christian Academy last season and will be coaching at the collegiate level for the first time.

"I really believe that Danny will be an impact player for us in his freshman year.  When I saw him on film I got on the phone with Coach Hudson to check on his status and desire to play at the next level."

Bise, who plays on the Wildcats baseball team is also expected to run track again in the spring as the Wildcats look to defend their 4X100 State Titles in girls and boys track.

Three among Forty-Two best
Covington County players included in finalists for 2007 Mr. Football Award

Three players from Covington County join Foley High School senior wide receiver Julio Jones (considered the nation’s top prep prospect by ESPN) in a list of 42 finalists selected last week by the Alabama Sports Writers Association for its 2007 Mr. Football Award.  sporting news on Program23

On the list...

Andalusia's Michael Berry, 6' 200, has over 1,500 yards rushing and 30 touchdowns while averaging 128.9 yards a game.  Berry also played sparingly in several games nursing an early season injury.
Andalusia's "Baby D" is one of the reason's Berry has holes to run through.  The 6'2 320 pound lineman has helped the offense roll up more than 4,000 yds
Florala's Danny Bise
has nearly 2,800 all purpose yards for the 2007 season - 1300 receiving with 18 touchdowns, 1000 return yards and nearly 400 yards rushing.

 Season Ends for Wildcats

For the second straight year the Florala Wildcats season comes to an end in Maplesville where the Red Devils were too much for the 1A Wildcats.  Florala spotted Maplesville to a 41-0 halftime lead, before falling short in the second half 54-30.

The Florala Wildcats had carried a worried crowd through halftime until the game was decidedly in the Wildcats favor.  AL Johnson came out to play and took an early 8-0 lead.  The Wildcats scored late in the second quarter to tie the score when Calvin Mulkey scored on a pass from TJ Fleming and Gundrum caught a two-point conversion from Fleming to tie the game.

The Wildcats scored 16 in the third period to advance to the second round to face the Maplesville Red Devils.  The Red Devils soundly defeated Florala last season 42-0.

Hudson "painting a canvas"
(quietly picks up 160th win)

Florala Wildcats' head football coach Arlton Hudson goes about his job without looking for extra reward or praise.  That's why no one knows that Hudson picked up his 160 career coaching victory last Friday Night over McKenzie.

Hudson has accomplished this at schools where most can't win.  His first year at Southside his team finishes 9-1 - the previous ten season only produced a combined 8 wins.  Last season Hudson arrived at Florala after leaving Hillcrest as their winningest coach.  At Florala, Hudson is one of four coaches to have an undefeated season.    CONGRATS COACH HUDSON on #160..... and keep painting wins...

ASWA Player of the Week

Opp's David Brownlee, Florala's Calvin Mulkey and Andalusia's Michael Berry earned nominations, but it was Fort Payne quarterback Slade Smith earned a spot in the state record book with seven touchdown passes and Alabama Sports Writers Association offensive player of the week honors.

Mulkey - Birmingham News Player of the Week

Florala Wildcat Calvin Mulkey gained more statewide attention after last week's 372 yard performance and being named the Birmingham News' State Player of the Week.  Mulkey had 226 yards rushing with TD runs of 31 and 65 yards and also had 146 yards in receptions, including a 68-yard touchdown reception.

Mulkey also gained attention Sept 12 as defensive player of the week after the Wildcats win over Providence when he returned a blocked punt for a touchdown with no time remaining.

Wildcats Top Tigers

Calvin Mulkey scored three touchdowns and the Wildcats improved to 7-2 on the year ending 1A region 2 play defeating McKenzie 39-30.  McKenzie held the ball for almost three quarters of the game - turning from their spread offense to a running - misdirection style offense that show cased a lot of young talented players.

Mulkey started things off for the quick scoring Wildcats on a 68 yard scoring strike from TJ Fleming.  The point after by Cliff Goolsby was good and the Homecoming crowd enjoyed a 7-0 lead.  Starting a freshman quarterback in place of an injured Rudolph, the Tigers went ahead of the Wildcats on a 12 yard strike themselves and added a 2 point conversion 7-8.

Maurice Cain scored in the second half to put the Wildcats back on top 15-8, but the Tigers roared back for a 15-16 halftime lead.  In the third quarter it was all Wildcats with scores from TJ Fleming, Calvin Mulkey and OJ Chambers building a 33-15 advantage, but McKenzie came back shocking the homecoming crowd that didn't leave.  The Tigers scored with less than 3 minutes to go bring the game close at 33-30.

After a failed onside kick, Calvin Mulkey ran a 65 yard touchdown to give the Wildcats a nine point advantage and the victory 39-30.

Florala improved to 6-1 in the region and will play 3A Dale County in Midland next Friday to end the regular season.  The Wildcats will host AL Johnson in the first round of the playoffs.

Powder Puff Excitement

The Seniors may have been a different class, but the results were the same as they dominated the 2nd Annual Wildcat Powder Puff game during Homecoming week.  The crowd, much larger than last season, enjoyed an emotional game that went as expected with the track team overwhelming the junior . freshman squad.  Dee

Dee Smith opened up scoring with a 65 yard blurr down the right side as she showed her speed, but it was defense the rest of the game until the final quarter when Emily Evans scored twice for the "Hesiman"
team.  The junior-freshman squad threatened in the end driving to the goal line as time expired - unable to score in the 18-0 defeat.

Brantley adds to streak

The Brantley Bulldogs added another year to their winning streak over Florala with a 34-15 victory over the Wildcats in week 8.  The match-up of undefeated region teams was close in the first half as Florala kicked their first field goal of the season from Cliff Goolsby to take a 3-0 lead.  Brantley drove the length of the field using power and speed to take a 3-7 lead, but Florala who earlier had not thrown the ball went to their open passing attack to take back control 9-7.  The defenses that controlled most of the first 9 minutes of play was failing for both teams as Brantley took another lead 9-14.

TJ Fleming threw his second TD of the night  for a 15-14 Wildcat advantage.  The Wildcats looked in control on Brantley's next series as Florala's defensive front gained space into the back field throwing the Bulldogs for a loss.  On third down, Cliff Goolsby grabbed Anthony Gulley in the back field and Reggie Gundrum assisted to bring down the speedy and powerful back for a loss.  Florala was flagged with a fifteen yard penalty that moved the Bulldogs closer to the first down marker.  Gulley gained the corner and won the footrace to the end zone as Brantley took a 15-20.  Jarred Martin, who is the leading tackler at middle linebacker and starts at center, was ejected from play on a failed two point conversion and the Wildcats never recovered.

With the loss the Wildcats fall to the second position and will host their first playoff game in three years.

Winners of two Straight

Florala defeated Pleasant Home and Zion Chapel to wrap up no less than a third seed and likely a second seed in the playoffs.  The wins mark coach Arlton Hudson's seventh playoff appearance with Florala and second consecutive since returning two years ago.  The Wildcats, who face Brantley and McKenzie should be at least the second seed and probably face region 4's fourth seed and with a win - another trip to Maplesville.

BACK ON TRACK
Wildcats defeat Eagles

The Florala Wildcats were looking at Pleasant Home as a blimp on the schedule - a possible break after 2A #5 Wicksburg and time to rest before #7 Brantley and #6 McKenzie end region play.

However, the Eagles had different plans as a first half crowd watched in horror as the neighboring school looked to upset the #9 ranked Wildcats.

Pleasant Home started the night with an un-orthodox play with an onside kick and recovered the ball to shock Florala.  Garrett Roland picked up a big play and move Pleasant Home down to the 23 yard line and the Eagles moved the ball to the 16 yard line as Florala was still celebrating from early festivities on Senior night.

Josh Dozier takes the ball into the end zone and a shocked home crowd sat in disbelief as the Eagles took an 8-0 lead after Doziers' 3 yard run and a two point conversion by the senior.

The Eagles looked to take advantage, but one play and 52 yards later - senior David Bass scored off a TD pass from senior TJ Fleming.  The point after was no good and the Eagles kept their 8-6 lead.

Tyler Barbaree took the ball on the next play from Pleasant Home after coming in motion and romps around the end to pick up an Eagle first down as Arlton Hudson called a time out with the ball close to mid-field.  It was the Eagles that made the first mistake fumbling in the backfield and picked up by Florala's Stephon McLaughlin at the 41 yard line.

The Wildcats make their first fourth down conversion at 3:23 in the first with a Fleming quarterback sneak at the 15 yard line.  On the first down play - Fleming found Calvin Mulkey in the end zone for a 15 yard touchdown and Florala took a 12-8 lead.

The Wildcat defense stepped up on the next series of plays and hold the Eagles after Reggie Gundrum takes Barbaree down on a 6 yard loss putting the Eagles in a touch situation deep in their own territory - setting up a punt from Dozier and Wildcats start on their 47.

1:17 was the time on the clock in the first quarter as Danny Bise is tackled on a two yard gain, but it only took another play for senior OJ Chambers to break free through the middle of the line and followed Bise and Gundrum down field rambling 51 yards with 51 seconds remaining giving Florala a ten point lead 18-8.

The teams went back and forth before Pleasant Home closes the gap.  On a third and twelve - the Eagles get a big gain on a pitch to Langley and Dozier picks up the first down on fourth down.  Pleasant Home picked up three and four yard gains throughout the late drive in the second quarter.  6:38 remained in the quarter as Dozier picked up ten yards from the 23 yard line pushing the Eagles to the thirteen.  Dozier picks up another first down moving in the ball inside the three yard line of Florala and Dozier again scores adding another conversion to trail Florala 18-16.

Florala takes the ball on their 24 after a 48 yard punt from Pleasant Home with 1:18 left after both teams swap possessions.  TJ Fleming passes to Stephon McLaughlin on first down, but the ball bounces off his chest and into the waiting hands of Danny Bise who takes the errand ball to the Eagles' 32 yard line.  On the following play - Fleming hits Danny Bise for his third touchdown pass of the night to end the quarter and takes a 24-16 advantage.

Pleasant Home scores with 2:41 left in the game to give them 24 points, but Florala had added scores of their own and held a 39-24 lead.  With the win the Wildcats move to 4-0 in 1A region 2 and 5-1 for the season.  Pleasant Home falls to 0-4, 1-5 over-all.

County's last undefeated falls

Florala knew going into the season that the Wicksburg game was going to be tough.  The Schedule was made out by departing coach Doug Vickery - now at Flomaton (5-0) - which includes two 3A teams to start and end the season and 2A Wicksburg in the middle.  Last season the Wildcats lost in the final quarter and a repeat performance happened last night at Mathews Stadium.  2A #6 Wicksburg pulled off a 23-21 victory with a 30 yard field goal at the 4:06 mark.  The Wildcats were held on one fourth down attempt, but the defense held the Panthers giving Florala one last chance with :54 seconds remaining.  Florala drove the field and had a 30 yard pass intercepted in the end zone by Blake Wallace to secure the Panther win....

Wildcats prepare for #6 Wicksburg

Last season was a game to be forgotten - another injury filled night that included the loss of then senior Kyle McCoy.  This year the Panthers roll into "the Mat" with both teams 4-0 and ranked in their classification.  The Wildcats are nursing some injuries like last season, but nothing serious or game threatening.

The Wildcats have yet to play a game with rain or wet conditions in their four wins and are uncertain how good their offense could be on a dry field.  Florala scored their first two touchdowns last Friday against Kinston on two plays - a pass to #5 Danny Bise and a pass to #3 Calvin Mulkey.  The prior week TJ Fleming had over 400 yards passing and 4 TDs.

Florala is also shooting for only their fifth undefeated season in Florala history.  The last time - Arlton Hudson was Florala's head football coach.

Florala 35, Kinston 19

With the Band and Cheerleaders send home because of rain and tornado warning - the football team waited around to get started a little after 7 as the Kinston Bulldogs take the ball and drive the length of the field on their first possession.  Kinston lines up for a field goal attempt and Calvin Mulkey takes the short kick at the three and returns into Bulldog territory for the Wildcats first TD.

Danny Bise and Mulkey catch TJ Fleming passes for the first two scores and Reggie Gundrum adds a score of his own.  Florala built a 27-0 first half lead and play the JV in the entire second half as the #7 Wildcats defeat the Kinston Bulldogs and move to 4-0 over and 3-0 in the region.

"Cat" fight in Ariton

A "Wild" cat finish to an exciting game at Providence sends the Wildcats to Ariton 2-0 on the season and 1-0 in 1A region 2.

The Purple Cats defeated Zion Chapel 47-6 to move even for the season and 1-0 in region play.

"Wild" Finish at Providence

Last year it seemed the bounces went the other way for Florala, but this year - just maybe - the Wildcats can get a few breaks.  One came Friday night as Providence Christian lined for a field goal with a chance to win the game with less than 4 seconds remaining.
