Florala Wildcat Track team

BOYS WIN 1A STATE TITLE

The Florala Wildcats won their first ever team state title in any sport in the 1A Girls 4x100 meter in a time of 52.88.  Approximately 5 minutes later the Wildcats added their second title when Florala won the 1A Boys 4x100 meter relay at 44.46.  The Wildcats had to wait for approximately two hours for the girls official confirmation as a Wildcat team was disqualified for the second straight day.  Coaches Brandi Evans and Joy Colvin have - pleading cases to a science and won their second appeal in as many days for the Wildcats.

Katie Carroll collapsed about three quarters through the 800 meter run and was taken to an area hospital.  Carroll was unconscious when medical assistance arrived and once stable was taken for fluids and treatment.  Katie greeted her teammates back at Troy University and is doing great.

Wildcats on the verge
State Track Meet

The Florala Wildcats have four opportunities to add to last year's state championship by Liz Ferman as the boys posted the best time from the field in the 4x100 meter race and the girls were in second in the 4x100 meter.  Liz also has an opportunity for individual awards in 100m 200m and 400m while DeAndre Lewis has a chance in the 100 meter dash boys.  Tayaka Davis placed fifth in the 100 m dash and will push Liz during Saturday's finals.

Wildcats almost disqualified
State Track Meet

The Boys finished way ahead of the pack in the prelims of the 4x100 at Troy University, but were disqualified from the competition after an official flagged Ro Williams for running out of their lane after passing the baton.  The Florala coaches Brandi Evans and Joy Colvin immediately challenged the ruling and after review the Wildcats were allowed back into the field for tomorrows final.

The girls are three-tenths of a second behind Talladega County in the 4x100.  Liz Ferman finished at the top of the 100m Dash and still has the 200m and 400m to attempt.  Teammate Tayaka Davis finished third in the 100m and should qualify for the finals with Liz on Saturday.

DeAndre Lewis also qualified for the boys 100m finals on Saturday.

TRACK

The Florala Wildcats went to Troy University Thursday to run with the "big schools" as they competed against 6A Charles Henderson, 6A Dothan, 5A Eufaula and other larger schools from the area.  Coaches Joy Colvin and Brandi Evans had a depleated team as several members were unable to compete due to illness.

This didn't stop the boys from holding their own against a stadium full of speed.  DeAndre Lewis ran well in his heat - finishing 3rd in the 100M dash and Junior Tayaka Davis finished 3rd in the girls 100M dash.   Danny Bise was a late entry into the 400M, but with last minute coaching and advice from Colvin and Evans finished 2nd.

The boys had hoped the 4X100 would be their best opportunity for placing and after the first leg from Lewis, the Cats had a distinct advantage.  The first baton pass was exchanged and Ro Williams kept the Wildcats in the lead going into the second turn, but a delayed baton pass held the Wildcats down and by the last turn Florala had fell back in the pack.

Katie Carroll surprised the field with her fourth place finish against the upper classification.  "Katie has been working extremely hard and she performed well against some great competition today" said Evans.  Carroll ran the 800 meter for the Wildcats

"It was a great experience for the team" said Evans and Colvin.  "We should do really well in the sectionals and we have a few things to work on over the next couple weeks".    PICTURES

"Dusting" the competition

Florala Track Coaches Brandi Evans and Joy Colvin made adjustments to the Wildcats' track roster and immediately the changes paid off.

Emily Evans joined the relay team to secure the first leg of the girls 4x-relay.  Evans show tremendous speed during the "Powder Puff" football game Homecoming week and is a captain on the Cheerleading squad.

The Lady Cats' left the competition in the dust and finished in 1st place once Relay results were posted.

Ferman leaves the field

DeAndre Lewis continued adding ribbons to his collection finishing first in the 100m dash and first in the 200m dash.  "Ro" Williams finished 3rd in the 200m dash.

For the Lady Cats individually - Tayaka Davis finished 4th in the 100m dash, but watched from behind as Senior Liz Ferman finish ahead of the pack in first..  Ferman also finished 3rd in the 400m dash.

Florala performed well as a team, but the individual results have yet to be posted from the TR Miller meet.  Liz Ferman told Program23 Friday afternoon she had a difficult time getting out of the blocks.  "we couldn't use our starting blocks - and I was a little uncomfortable coming out".
"Dede" Smith in the long jump.
Like the Troy meet the results are generally not available to the schools until the week after the meet.

The Florala Wildcats Track season is out of the starting block and Senior Liz Ferman is on pace to defend her State Title in the 400 meter dash and add the 100 meter into the mix.  Florala competed Thursday in Jay, Florida and had a great showing for only their second competition of the season.  Liz placed first in both the 100 meter and 400 meter dash - while the boys swept the 200 meter and DeAndre' Lewis set expectations for the boys.  Danny Bise was able to compete with the Wildcat Baseball team having the day off.

Florala Track

The expectation is high and the pressure for another Championship for the Wildcats' Track team.  Thirteen students are members of this years' team - building from nine last season.  Three members return from last years' fourth place Girls 4X100 relay team - Tayaka Davis, Deandria Smith and Liz Ferman.   On the boys side only junior Calvin Mulkey returns from last season's second place 4X100 team.  Florala is the lone county team to compete in Track and replaces five members from last year's squad.  The Wildcats also add Long Distance Running, Decathlon, Shotput and Discus to their competition events.  6'7 315" Junior Dominique Moore and 6'3 240 Senior Kyle McCoy could add a new dimension to the boys team.

Senior Liz Ferman also looks to add another Championship to last years 400m dash.  The senior has already received notice from college scouts eyeing her success from last season and her potential in the upcoming season.
