Florala Wildcat Track team

Wildcats finish well at State Track
(Boys win 2nd Straight 4x100m Title)

.12 of a second.
A blink of an eye.

Last Year the Lady Wildcats defeated Talladega County 52.88 to 53.07.   This year Talladega County defeated Florala 53.00 to 53.12.

The amazing feet in the girls 1A State Runners-up title is three will be returning for at least two more years.  Kiana Smith, Angela Radford, Justina Clissold will all return and Tayaka Davis graduates with another medal to her collection and finished her second year with a 4th Place finish in the 1A 100m Dash.

The Boys 4X100 team won their second 1A State Title as OJ Chambers and Danny Bise were aboard both times.  Calvin Mulkey and David Bass joined the two in setting a mark for future Wildcat teams to meet.

The Wildcats defeated football nemesis, Maplesville, for the second straight year after the Wildcats finished at 45.27 followed by 46.00 from the Red Devils.  Last season Florala won 44.46 to 44.78.

It wasn't all track and running as the Wildcats added Discus, Shot, and Javelin to their field events and in their first year competing placed in all three.

Senior Jasmine Harrison finished in 3rd Place in the Shot with a distance of 31-02.50 (1st - 32-05.75; 2nd 31-05.50).

Senior TJ Fleming added track and field to a very busy year of Football, Basketball and baseball with a 3rd place finish in both Discus and Javelin.  Flemings distance in the Discus was 111-05 (133-08; 128-00) and the Javelin 138-07 (156-00; 140-08)

Both teams continued to place in track events as senior Calvin Mulkey finished in 3rd Place in the 1A 200m Dash.

Girls' 4x400m Relay: 7th Place (Angela Radford, Taylor Goodwin, Justina Clissold, and Paige Irwin).  "We are really excited about the future of this group. These are 8th and 9th graders with a great deal of promise if they continue to work hard at this event" stated Coach Brandi Evans on the members of the 4X400m team.

Eighth grader Irwin placed 8th in the 800m Run and Ninth grader Clissold placed 8th in the 200m Dash.

The Girls finished 8th overall for the second year in a row.  Teams are ranked overall gaining points for a top 8 finish.  Nineteen girls' teams scored points during the two day event.  The Boys also finished 8th overall out of twenty-six teams posting points.  Last season the boys finished twelfth.

Wildcats on Track for another Title

The boys and girls both finished first in the 4x100m sectionals last week at Tuscaloosa.  Last year both won the state title and had to replace their teams with new members.  The girls have only Tayaka Davis back, joined by an 8th grader and two underclassman.  The boys have four seniors and two returners in OJ Chambers and Danny Bise.

This weekend at Troy University the Wildcats will also compete for the overall team standing with many new individual events.

WIldcats on TRACK

The Florala Track team is known for speed, but Saturday they slowed down and took their time washing cars to raise money for the 2008 season.  A supporter also donated pizza to the team to keep their energy levels high.   "We'd really like to thank the Huddle House for allowing us their parking lot to assist us in hitting our goals" said Coach Brandi Evans.  .

The Wildcats started their 2008 Track Season yesterday in Jay, Florida and picked up where the left on in 2007 - the winner's stand.  Florala placed first in five events and again swept the boys 100m dash taking first, second and third.     The boys also remain on pace to repeat in the 4X100 taking first and Tayaka Davis won first in the 100m and 200m dash

The Florala Wildcats have announced the 2007-2008 team with some noticeable changes to last year's girls team.  Gone from graduation is Liz Ferman, but also missing are current seniors Emily Evans and DeDe Smith.

The Boys 4 x 100 relay team could be stronger than last season's with Danny Bise and OJ Chambers returning and joined by Calvin Mulkey and David Bass.

All in all - twenty-one members of the 2008 track team will compete for Florala, building in three short years one of the largest teams in 1A.  All team members must compete in at least two events, so the relay team members will also participate in some individual events.

"Most of our team members are new to track and field; therefore, we have not settled on exactly which events will be best suited for their abilities" said Coach Brandi Evans.

The Wildcats have several meets and over a month to prepare for Sectionals and State.

Wildcats look to defend Titles
After two seasons of state titles and championship trophies the Wildcats will begin preparation for another exceptional year on the oval track.

In 2006, Liz Ferman won the 1A 400 meter title and helped the girls to a 4th place finish in the 4 X 100 while the boys where finishing second in the same event.
Last year off the "heels" of Ferman, the Wildcats catapulted themselves into the spotlight as Liz returned for her senior season and helped Florala claim their historic, first ever team championship as both the boys and girls won the 1A State Title in the 4 X 100 Relay.

The Wildcats dominated track meet's last season as Ferman took first or finished near the top in almost ever event, while juniors Tayaka Davis and Deandria Smith were close behind. Emily Evans came on late last season to complete the girls team that seemed dystined to finish in first.

At Troy University, Florala finished in the preliminaries behind Talladega County, but finished three-tenths of a second ahead in the final run, winning at 52.88.
The boys faced the team that had knocked them out of the football playoffs, but the Wildcats finished ahead of the Red Devils winning at 44.46. OJ Chambers, DeAndre Lewis, Ro Williams, and Danny Bise finished with a medal of their own.

This season looks to pick up where the 2007 team finished if Evans, Davis, and Smith all return on the Lady Wildcats side. Bise and Chambers will be the only returners from the 4 X 100 boys teams.

Coaches Brandi Evans and Joy Colvin haven't announced the 2008 Track sqaud, but the meets have been placed on the calendar and the Wildcats get started this Thursday, March 13 at Jay, Florida. Last year, the Wildcats started at Jay and finished first in every event and won all three top spots in the 200m for the boys.
