Luverne downs Lady
Tigers
(correspondent to Program23)
The Lady Tigers took the lead early and lead by 7 points at the
half, the girls came out flat in the 3rd and got down by as much as 20
points but rallied in the 4th with better defense and some good shooting.
The twenty point deficit was to much to overcome as the Red Level Lady
Tigers lose an important 2A Area 3 battle to Luverne by a score of 58 -
47.
Red Level vs
Highland Home
The Red Level girls upending Highland Home 52-44. The Lady Tigers controlled the game from
the opening tip, dominating Highland Home on the boards and in the scoring
column for the first three quarters of the contest. However, a furious
Lady Squadron rally in the final period, which included 12 fourth quarter
points from Jessica Merriweather, forced Red Level to hold on to the ball
and settle for wide open shots.
Though the Lady Tigers went on
to dominate the first period, they missed their first six shots of the
game before Starla Jones finally put the Tigers ahead 2-0 with her running
jumper with 6:35 left in the opening frame. A bucket by Erica Crawford
stretched the lead to 4-0, before Highland Home answered with a free throw
from Merriweather. But the Red Level assault continued. Jones, Crawford,
and Koneshia Calloway all added baskets in the quarter as the Lady Tigers
took a 15-4 lead into the second quarter.
Highland Home managed to come
alive in the next period, due to the post play of Merriweather. The Lady
Squadron guards patiently dribbled around the top of the key, waiting for
their star to get open. Merriweather managed to get a couple of baskets,
but did most of her damage from the free throw line, where she hit on 9 of
10 of her attempts to keep her team hanging around, 18-29. Red Level
began to attack the lane after the break, stretching the lead to 32-20
with a layup by Crawford. Merriweather answered back for the Lady
Squadron, but then Crawford went on a tear, scoring seven of the next
eight points to put her Lady Tigers up 39-27 going into the fourth.
An opening quarter bucket by Adrianna Bradley increased the lead to 14,
but Merriweather then took over the game, scoring a jumper with 4:05 left
to cut the lead down to 41-31 and then exploding for 10 of the next 14
points to get her team within five, 41-46.
Jones drove the lane a minute
later to get her team back on the board and Lania Paulk and Bradley ended
the quarter with two straight jumpers to give Red Level their fourth area
win of the season. Crawford led Red Level with 15 points and Jones
added 10. Merriweather had 30 for Highland Home in the loss.

dropped their games to the Luverne Tigers, including an overtime loss by
the Lady Tigers and a 63-55 varsity defeat. Fred Hawkins was
dominate leading Luverne to 9-3 with their area win over the Red Level
Tigers. Clay Marshall poured in 18 points as the host Red Level
Tigers couldn't turn things around for the second straight area loss.
Luverne's Jaleesa Franklin
hit a three pointer as the time expired in the first period to put the
Tigers ahead 11-3 in the opening of area play for 2007. Luverne
was just in Red Level last week competing in the 9th Annual Classic,
but lost the first two games (Andalusia / Brantley) before
defeating McKenzie. The Red Level Lady Tigers started slow and
couldn't find a rhythm in the first period and partially into the
second until Starla Jones of RL hit an outside jump shot pushing the
Lady Tigers closer. Lania Paulk played well inside with several
rebounds and blocked shots down low, but got into foul trouble early
including a charging call on offense and had to sit for the final five
minutes of period two. Lindsay Jones took a pass from Starla
Jones down low to pull with in four points with four minutes to play,
but Luverne's Burnett countered pushing the lead back to six.
Red Level fought tough in the second half sending the game into
overtime for the second time in consecutive games. This time the
Lady Tigers fell in the extended period.

Lady Tigers win thriller
After trailing by nine points in the
closing minutes of the first half, the Red Level girlsı varsity
basketball team pulled out a stunning 44-42 home-court victory
against the visiting Florala Wildcats on Friday.
The score was tied at 42 a piece with 26
seconds left on the game clock when Starla Jones went to the free
throw line after taking a hard foul driving the lane. Jones calmly
sank both attempts in what would provide the eventual margin of
victory. Though the Lady Tigers were forced to play catch up
basketball for most of the night, sophomore guard BreAnna Pate
scored the initial basket on the opening tip off, putting her team
temporarily in front, 2-0. But, Florala quickly answered
when Reva Odom hit a 3-pointer from the right side of the key that
barely moved the net.
Then, freshman Lania Paulk gave the
lead, 4-3, back to the Tigers with a
follow on basket coming off a low post. However, that would be the
last time
Red Level would be the front runner until the waning seconds of
the game. In
fact, the Lady Wildcats stretched the lead to eight points, 14-6,
to close
out the opening period and still led at the half, 24-19, though
the margin
had been cut to five. Red Level (4-4 Overall, 1-0 District)
struggled to stay in the game in the first half primarily on
its free-throw shooting ability. Erica Crawford went
three-for-three during that time, including a 3-point effort to
move the Tigers a bit closer, 14-9, as the second period got
underway. Paulk added two others as the team went 5-5 in the first
16 minutes of play. Neither team shot the ball well from the
floor, with one exception Floralaıs Odom. Possessing a
lightning-quick release, Odom practically owned the right side of
the key, burning the cords for a trio of 3-pointers. Each seemed
to come at just the right time to stem a Tiger rally or to lift
her team out of a temporary shooting slump.
Red Level seemed to be a different team
as the second half got underway, making up the 5-point, first half
deficit and finally tying the game at 33 all on a Jones jumper
from about eight feet. "I gave them a chewing out at halftime,"
Red Level Coach Delores Kelley said. "We were just too lazy on
defense. We went from our 2-1-2 to the triangle, primarily to
cover the [Florala] girls on the outside. We had to take away that
outside shot." The changes seemed to work, with Floralaıs Odom
being held to only a pair of free throws in the second half. She
finished with 11 points to lead her teamıs losing effort, while
Deandria Smith contributed eight in a supporting role.
Meanwhile, Red Level presented a balance
scoring attack with three players hitting double figures. Tierra
Brundidge, Andrianna Bradley and Jones all finished with ten
points each. Brundidge is a senior while Bradley and Jones are
each sophomores.
