Slow start ends Tigers' season
Red Level 12 31 46 67
Leroy 21 32 55 73

The Red Level Tigers basketball season came to a end Friday night, facing off against Leroy the Tigers got off to a sluggish start and the Bears would use their 21 first quarter points to stake a 9 point lead.

The second quarter, Leroy came out and increase their lead but the Tigers poured it on during the last half of the quarter to excite the Red Level faithful.  Down 20-30, the Tigers realed off 10 quick, unanswered points to tie the game at 30.   Red Level hit 1 free throw shot to give them their first lead of the game at 31-30, but the Bears hit the last shot before half taking a 32-31 lead in tthe break.

A slow third quarter start for the Tigers would resemble their first quarter during the first 3 minutes as the Bears increased their lead to 9 points, creating an uphill challenge for Red Level the remainder of the game.

Red Level managed to cut the lead down to 4 points twice in the last 30 seconds but would eventually lose by 6 points, 67-73.

The Tigers were led in scoring by Leonard Palmer with 22 points, Cale Nolen added 19, with Mathew Bond's 12, and DJ Sankey posted 11.

Leroy would also have 4 guys in double figures with Patrick Rivers leading the way scoring 22 points.

The Tigers had a great season after getting off to a slow start.  Red Level managed to come back and play some of their best basketball in the last 3 games of the season and will be hoping to carry the momentum over in to next year, this year's team had graduate 4 seniors who will be greatly missed and we wish good luck to each one of them in their future.

Tigers fall in Luverne
Red Level lost to Luverne by a final score of 78 to 73.
Luverne 14 35 56 78
Red Level 16 36 52 73

Red Level came out and started right back where they had left off playing with great enthusiasm and the same intensity they had in their win over Georgiana.  The 2A Area 2 Championship game would be another close one where R.L had lead the 1st two quarters but had a slight offensive slowdown in the 3rd qtr and would try to make another comeback.

Red Level fought back and took the lead 66 to 65 with 3:34 left in the game but at the Tigers were in serious foul trouble with one player on the bench with five fouls and another five players with 4 fouls a piece, Luverne would take advantage of it by feeding their big men in the paint and shooting great from the free throw line to seal the win down the stretch.

Red Level would get one last shot to close in on the lead, being behind by only 4 points with 36 seconds left the third seed had the chance to cut the lead to 2 points with possession of the ball.  However a costly turnover on the inbounds would give Luverne a 6 point lead.

Luverne dominated the boards early and and the early aggressive play from Red Level was reduced by their foul trouble late in the game.

The Red Level Tigers have had peaked at the right time and could be playing the best ball of their season at the end and one more win would send them to Troy University for the 2A Regional final tournament.

Leading Red Level and all scores for the night was Cale Nolen with 32, DJ Sankey and Leonard Palmer would add 12 points each, Jeff Day 8, Mathew Bond 6, Luke Sharpe 3.

For Luverne it was Stoney Jackson who scored 23 points, Brezman Lowery added 16 and Kevin May 12.

The R.L Tigers will now travel and take on Leroy in the sub-regional contest while Luverne will take on Flomaton on Friday.  The Hurricanes lost to the Bears 75-71 in overtime.

Tigers advance over Panthers

Red Level played Georgiana in the first game of the area playoffs, R.L was the underdog losing both of the area games to Georgiana in the regular season, but the Tigers would play their best game of the season, as the old saying goes save the best for last.

The first quarter ended with Red Level holding a 14 to 10 lead but the pace would start to increase as each team swapped buckets through out the 2nd qtr and Red level would again hold the lead at halftime by a score of 34 to 31.

Georgiana came out and made a strong run at the Tigers and would eventually take the lead holding a 55-53 advantage after 3 quarters of play.

The 4th qtr was a very very fast paced game with the teams both swapping baskets at a high rate of speed.  Georgiana was leading 66 to 58 with 5 minutes to play but Red Level came storming back closing the score slightly on each possession of the ball, off of clutch shooting by DJ Sankey.

Sankey hit three 3 pointers in the 4th quarter alone and help the Tigers tie the game at 79 to 79 with 53 seconds left to play.  DJ Sankey got fouled with 41 seconds left and would hit both free throws giving R.L a 81 to 79 lead.

Sankey would get fouled again with 30 seconds to play this time he would add 1 free throw and R.L would lead 82 to 80 but the game was not over as Georgiana's Jamie Williams would go the length of the court and some how hit a highly contested lay-up to tie the game at 82 each with 21 seconds left.

After a timeout Red Level would have the ball with 21 seconds left, The Tigers would be looking for 1 last good shot to win the game, Georgiana would use added pressure to keep Sankey from getting the ball and the inbound pass would go to Cale Nolen, Nolen would go the length of the court, drive to the lane and hit a 12 foot jumper with 9 seconds left to give Red Level a 84 to 82 lead.

But again the very fast Georgiana team would quickly get the ball down court and inside to their big man Terrance Mathews who was fouled with 3 seconds left, fortunately for the Tigers Matthews would miss both free throws, R.L would get the rebound to seal the victory and hold on for a 84 to 82 win over Georgiana. Red Level would outscore Georgiana 31 to 27 in the 4th qtr.

Out of the 31 points for R.L Sankey would explode for 18 points in the 4th qtr. The win was a total team effort with each player contributing,

R.L will head back to play Luverne in the area finals on Monday night to see which team finishes 1st and which finishes 2nd. The game will he huge as it will decide who gets home court advantage in the next round.

Red Level falls to Luverne

Red Level dropped a critical area game and remained in a battle for third place in the area.  Luverne has turned things around since dropping two out of three in the Red Level Christmas Tournament.  The Luverne Tigers were almost unstoppable from outside the arc hitting seven shots from down town and running away with the game in the second half winning 75-53.

Red Level went up early and lead in the second quarter 26-20, until three straight unanswered three pointers from Luverne held the visiting tigers regain the lead 29-26.

"Luverne shot the ball extremely well tonight," Red Level coach Fred Kelley said. "We wanted to primarily defend their big men on the post and when they hit a few shots it took us out of what we wanted to do defensively.

"We were playing great in the first half until Luverne went on that run of 3-pointers, and then we just weren't able to get it going again."

Red Level fell to 9-12 and 3-3 in Class 2A, Area 2.

Leonard Palmer had 16 points to lead Red Level, followed by D.J. Sankey and Cale Nolen with six each.

Red Level gets area win

"[Highland Home] is always tough on the road" stated a Red Level Coach, and that proved true for the first quarter as the flying squadron took a commanding 12-2 lead over the Tigers.  Red Level poured on in the second quarter outscoring HH 20-10 to tie the game at half time.

The game continued in Red Level's favor in the second half as the Tigers continued building their lead after the third (40-36) and pulled out their third area victory winning 56-48.

The Tigers had little to no movement early as slow play looked to wear down Red Level until DJ Sankey with his game high 20 and Leonard Palmer's 14 turned things around.

Highland Home was lead by Carnell Bryant 12 and Alzamar Wallace 11.

Red Level prepares for Panthers

Georgiana comes into the games undefeated in both varsity teams and could be favorite to win the area under Opp Native Coach Norris, where his wife is the Tennis Coach.  The Lady Tigers are off to their best season under coach Douglas and are 3-0 in area play.  Red Level has one of the most balanced teams in their area, but face their biggest opponent yet.

The Varsity boys are 2-1 in area play and will face the 3-0 Panthers and could send shock waves through 2A area 2 with a victory.  DJ Sankey and Cale Nolen will need top performances to stop the Panthers who will have a 3 to 4 inch size advantage in the paint.

Red Level sweeps Goshen

The Tigers (8-10) got on a roll in Goshen moving to 2-1 in area play with a tight 44-40 victory.  Leonard Palmer lead the way for Red Level with 16 point and 10 rebounds.   Cale Nolen added 13 points.

The Lady Tigers remained undefeated in area play with a 50-42 win and Lania Paulk was unstoppable down low - pulling 14 rebounds and blocking 4 shots.  The sophomore also lead the Tigers with 12 points along with Erika Crawford who had 12 points 13 rebounds and 5 steals.

B-Team

Another hard fought win for the younger Tigers as the win 59-35 to improve to 7-5.

Boys fall to 1-1 in area

Luverne overcame their Christmas Tournament woes and defeated the Red Level Tigers, 59-55.  Red Level had four players in double figures led by Brasmon Harris lwith 14 points.  Red Level (7-10, 1-1) got 20 points from D.J. Sankey and 12 points from Cale Nolen

Red Level Christmas Tournament

The 10th Annual tournament was a success as the undefeated Brantley Lady Bulldogs showed their talent easily winning the girls bracket.  The Straughn Tigers improved to 12-2, winning their 9th straight and captured their first tournament victory in the Christmas Classic.

Tournament Bracket

Bobcats split with Tigers
(Bobcat JV wins)
(Tripp Norris)

Varsity Boys = Red Level 48 Opp 46

Opp (3-8) returned home hoping to turn things around after going 1-2 in the Andalusia Tournament last weekend and Red Level traveled after competing in the Straughn Tournament as both were looking for a win.

Free throws were the factor in the game as Opp missed free throws and layups while the Tigers clutch line shooting game them a two point lead with four seconds remaining.  The Bobcats last chance failed as a bad pass was thrown right into the hands of a Tiger player and Red Level held on for the 2 point win, 48-46.

B-Team Boys = Opp 35 Red Level 29

The Opp (4-4) B-Team gained a bit of revenge from their December 7th loss at Red Level (5-3) winning, 35-29. The Bobcats held the lead the entire game jumping out to a 6-0 and Red Level would not get any closer than 4 the rest of the night.

Varsity Boys = Red Level 52 Opp 47

The Opp/Red Level Varsity Boys games each year are usually tight and come down the 4th quarter. The game last night was no different. Red Level (3-3) used its opportunities given at the foul line to earn the five point win over Opp (2-4) last night. The two teams only combined for 15 points in the first quarter as they tried to get the feel for one another. The 2nd quarter was totally different as both team scored in double digits capped off by Albert Wilson buzzer beater to cut the Tiger lead to just 3 points at the break. The third quarter belonged to the Bobcats as they chipped away at the Tiger lead and managed to tie the game at 35 all entering the final quarter. The 4th quarter would be a close quarter as each team exchanged a 1 point lead until the Tigers managed to mount a 4 point lead with a minute remaining. Opp managed to cut it to 2 with less than a minute to play but then had to begin fouling and the Tigers made the neccessary free throws to win by the score of 52-47. The Bobcats were lead by Albert Wilson with 16 points, Tyriss Lane added 8, and Lavorous Colston chipped in with 7.

B-Team Boys = Red Level 46 Opp 32

The B-Team game saw Opp (3-3) fall behind early in the game as Red Level (3-2) started off with 2 quick shots but the Bobcats responded with a 6-0 run before Red Level scored 7 more to lead 11-6 after the 1st quarter. Opp managed to cut it to 4 at the half, but Red Level extended it to 8 after a 4-0 run to end the 3rd. The Bobcats tried to cut into the lead in the 4th but Red Level responded each time and pulled away late to win 46-32. Steadman Gerber lead Opp with 8 points, Tyler Harrison had 7, and Richard Davis 6. Zane Christian chipped in with 5 and Quadir Kincaid added 4.

Tigers sweep Highland Home

The Red Level B-Team got the night started off with a 46 to 41 victory. The win improves their record to 5-2 on the season. Red Level took an early lead but Highland Home would close the gap and the contest would remain tight throughout with Red Level holding on for the win. Red Level would have balanced scoring with Preston Ryce leading all scorers with 16, OJ McGee 10, Nick Dorsey 9, Tony Calloway with 8 points. For Highland Home Montgomery would score 13 and Harris added 8.

The Lady Tigers followed suit to bring home the area win.  Red Level jumped out to a quick and early lead and never look back for a 45 to 22 win over Highland Home. In the win Red Level got to use a lot of players which will certainly be a benefit on down the road. Erica Crawford scored 14 points with Lania Paulk adding 11 and Koneisha Calloway would finish with 10. Red Level girls are 1-0 in area play and 4-6 on the season.

In the Varsity boys game, Red Level would need a win to secure the sweep over the visiting Highland Home Flying Squadron. Last year Red Level played Highland Home twice and would lose each game by 15 points.

Highland Home was a very good team last year loaded with talent and most all of them were Juniors and returning for an expected playoff run.

The Squadron started the game off "flying and firing"  - hitting three 3 pointers in the 1st period alone and would take a 17 to 15 lead after the first.  AT the beginning of the second the Tigers first three minutes would be an offensive tear outscoring Highland Home 8 to 2, taking a 23 to 19 lead.  The Tigers would play some great defense for the remainder of the 2nd QTR and hold Highland Home to only 8 points for the entire 2nd QTR, Red Level would lead 33 to 25 at the half.

The third would belong to Highland Home or to be more precise Rico Harris.  Harris would score 8 points in the first few minutes and cut R.L's lead down to 3 points, Later in the third Harris would hit back to back shots to give Highland Home the lead with only 1 minute left but Red Level's Leonard Palmer hit a huge jump shot to tie the game at 46 to 46 to set up a decisive fourth quarter.

With the last quarter left to play the game was right back to where it started, tied up.  Every possession would count and Highland Home scored a quick bucket on their 1st possession to take their only lead of the 4th, but would fight back to tie the game three more times before R.L could pull away for good.

Red Level would get 22 points in the 4th QTR and hold Highland Home to only 14 and win by a final score of 68 to 60, The victory gave the Tigers a 1-0 record in area play which should give the kids a big boost of confidence as each area game is big.

For Red Level it was Cale Nolen scoring 27 points, followed by Trevor Williams with 13,Matthew Bond 12, DJ Sankey 8 and Leonard Palmer added 6. For Highland Home Rico Harris would score 26 points 19 of them coming in the 2nd half, Merriweather would add 8 points.

The Lady Bobcats' won their fourth straight over the Tigers 64-27.   Abby Foster paced Opp with 13 points and Lania Paulk scored 11 and pulled down 10 rebounds for Red Level.

VARSITY

The R.L Varsity Boys was very close and tight throughout, with the final score being the biggest lead of the night.  Red Level held a one point lead after the first quarter, 8 to 7.

The 2nd qtr would flow a lot faster with both teams picking up the pace, but Red Level would use a 17 point performance to increase their lead slightly to hold a 25 to 22 going into the half.

Opp came out and outscore the Tigers 13 to 10 in the 3rd and would tie the game at the end of the third - setting things right back to where it started over a hour ago. The 4th qtr, the Tigers would again score 17 points and would hold on for a win over OPP by a final score of 52 to 47.

Mathew Bond would lead the Tigers in scoring with 14 points 8 of them coming in the 4th qtr. DJ Sankey would add 13 followed by Cale Nolen with 11.  For Opp it was Albert Wilson leading the way with 16 points.

The two teams face off again on Dec 17 in Opp.

Brantley get payback - defeat Red Level

The Bulldogs lost in Red Level but got a win over the Tigers at home last night
Wesley Person scored a game-high 29 points and Dexter Daniels added 22 for Brantley. Red Level (2-3) was led by D.J. Sankey with 22 points and 9 assists. Cayle Nolen followed with 19 points and Matthew Bond chipped in 10.

Lady Bulldogs win

The Bulldogs could be unstoppable as the roll to a victory over the 2A Tigers, 58-28.  9th grader Eisha Person scored 14 points and Sherry Gulley 13 for Brantley. Erica Crawford led Red Level with 14 points and 10 rebounds.

Tigers fall to Tigers

The Red Level Tigers came out flat and trailed 5 to 12 after the first quarter of play. Trevor Williams would spark the Tiger offense as Williams and DJ Sankey would both contribute to a 25 point second quarter but Red level's defense couldn't completely hold the Straughn Tigers and would still trail 30 to 35 at the half.

Straughn came out hot after half time extending their home lead to nine points and closing down on the 2A Tigers leading 51 to 42.  In the fourth Leonard Palmer got hot and would lead the Red Level boys to tie the game with 4:45 left in the game, but Straughn would pull away in the end and win 70 to 60.

Red Level was led in scoring by DJ Sankey and Leonard Palmer both had 16 points followed by Trevor Williams with 11 points.

Brantley invades Red Level

The Brantley JV won over Red Level in a hard fought contest, but pulled out a 35-34 victory over the Tigers.

Red Level girls played a tough first half but could not keep up the momentum as Brantley girls would pull away for a 65 to 38 win.  The Bulldogs coming off the Thanksgiving Tournament victory in Straughn continued with their winning ways moving to 4-0 on the season.  K.Calloway and L. Paulk would each score 11 points with E. Crawford scoring 7 and A Frazier added 6.   For Brantley S Gulley led all scorers with 27 and E Person addded 16 points.

VARSITY

The Red Level boys came into the game 0-1 on the season and needed a win to prevent Brantley from sweeping the Tigers on the night.

The Tigers came out and raced out to a quick lead but by the quarter's end Brantley had closed the score to 2 points.   The second quarter saw both teams pushing the ball up the court in a fast paced game and at the half - Red Level would still lead by 2 points over 1A Brantley.

After the break Red Level would once again build a big lead over Brantley in the first part of the third, but the Bulldogs stormed back hitting numerous three-pointers back to back and closed the score back down to 4 points.

Red Level would keep pace by swapping points throughout the fourth period as neither team could gain an advantage late.  However it was the free throw that provided the difference as the Tigers hit some timely shots from the strip to hold on for a 78 to 72 victory over the visiting Brantley Bulldogs.

DJ Sankey would lead all scorers with 26 points Cale Nolen would add 19, Leonard Palmer and Matthew Bond added 9 each followed by Luke Sharp scoring 7 points.

Basketball Kicks Off

Red Level got their Basketball season kicked off Friday Night traveling to take on the Flomaton Hurricanes as the B-team, Girls and Varsity would see action.

Troy Turman in his first game as the new B-team coach would be a good one to start off his young coaching career. The Red Level B-team jumped to a quick start leading 19 to 12 after the first quarter of play.  The Tigers also played some great defense holding Flomaton to 2 points for the second quater while adding 10 points of their own to take a 29 to 14 lead at halftime.
Coach Truman watched his B-team explode in the third quarter as the Tigers "lit" up the boards for 18 more points increasing the lead to 47 to 27 after three.  The fourth quarter would seem a tad boring as each team would coast to the end with Red Level's B-Team scoring nine to the Hurricanes three ending the contest with Red Level's 56 to 31 win over Flomaton.

O.J McGee would lead the B-Tigers with 15 points, James Baker scored 10 points, Preston Ryce and Tony Calloway would add 8 each, while Nick Dorsey scored 7 points and Trey Salter added 6.

Lady Tigers play thrilling game in Flomaton

VARSITY BOYS

The Red Level varsity boys kicked off their season playing the last game of the evening.  Unfortunately the Tigers offense was "Ice Cold" to start the game allowing Flomaton to jump out with a quick lead over the Tigers 11 to 4 at the end of the first quarter.  The second would be a little better for the Tigers offense but the defense would allow the Hurricanes to again outscore the Tigers and at the Half it was Flomaton leading 30 to 16.

Flomaton would outscore R.L in both periods. Starting the third Red level would start fight back and chip away at the Flomaton lead, outscoring Flomaton 11 to 7 cutting Flomaton's lead 10 points.

Red Level trailed 27 to 37 heading into the final quarter as Red Level's D.J Sankey "caught" fire to rally the Tigers and cut Flomaton's lead down to 3 points with 4:46 left in the game.

However, Flomaton would quickly build the lead back up to 8 points in the next 90 seconds.  Yet, Red Level would keep the game exciting cutting the lead to 4 points and had the ball with a chance to cut the lead down even more with 20 seconds left but couldn't make the final bucket. Red Level would lose by a final score of 42 to 46.

The Varsity Tiger out scored Flomaton in the second half but the slow start in their first game was too much to overcome.  The Tigers poor free throw shooting could be a result of transition from football to basketball, but was also the difference in the game - as the Tigers only hit 3 for 15 (20%) from the foul line.

D.J Sankey would lead all scorers with 15 points, Mathew Bond added 10, and Leonard Palmer would score 9 points.
