Red
Level puts up gallant effort Trailing by 20 points with almost 12 minutes remaining the Red Level Tigers put up a valiant comeback that would unfortunately fall short. It was like a heavy weight fight with each blow from one opponent came a counter from the other opponent. Blake Pate had a 30 yard run in the first half to close McKenzie's lead to four points 16-12. Pate had a big night for the Tigers in his final game as a senior, but so did all the Red Level players. It could have been easy to roll over trailing at half time 24-12 and an 0-9 record, but Coach Grimes kept his team focused and fighting the entire game. "Our guys never stopped playing - just like the entire year - even when we were behind they left it on the field" said Grimes on Friday. Pate finished with two kickoff returns for touchdowns (84, 86) was 6-8 for 128 yards passing with 2 touchdowns and 10-82 rushing with a 30 yard touchdown. On Defense Pate had 7 solo tackles and 1 forced fumble.
Red Level falls to Leroy
Leroy took advantage of early mistakes from Red Level to build a
quick 20-0 lead
Leroy returned the opening kick off to the 30 yard line and scored on the next play - a 10 yard pass out in the flats that was carried the distance for an opening possession score. Red Level fumbled on their first possession with Leroy taking a couple plays to convert into a touchdown using a 30 yard sweep. On the Tigers next possession the Bears hold and return the punt for a TD. Red Level has struggled this season, but the younger players continue to fight through these tough times building character along the way. The Tigers hope to get there first win of the season against a tough 1A McKenzie team that has found there own issues the last four games - losing all four after starting 5-0. The Tigers lost 3 players to injuries and have yet to recover. Red Level will host the McKenzie Tigers Thursday Night. Bears coming The Leroy Bears are coming into Red Level in a different situation than had previously been anticipated before the season started. Red Level was suppose to be at the top or near the top of the region, but imploded to go 0-8 thus far in 2007. Leroy has went about business as usual going 7-1 with their lone loss to #1 1A - Sweet Water. Friday night the Tigers will get a chance at the upset of the year as the Bears look to claim another state title and the Tigers are thinking about the hardwood. Battle for the bottom... No one wants to be the last team in the or in last place, but that could be the battle when in Silas. Red Level is 0-5 in region 1 while Choctaw is 1-4 when they face off. It could be a close battle, but the Tigers need to find some type of offense. The Tigers have played their games close early, but because of the inexperience and small numbers seem to fade in the end. LATEST PICTURES - On right Menu Can the Tigers make the Playoffs?
Not only could the Tigers get a win - there is still a chance Red Level could make the Playoffs with four region games remaining. I can almost hear Coach Grimes doing his Jim Mora impression.... "Playoffs - did you say Playoffs? Playoffs?" If something positive could happen for the Tigers - a break here - there - possible creating a "snow ball" effect...... who knows? If that happens - possibly. Two positive notes - three games are winnable and 3 of the 4 region games are at home.
To Recap.... If Red Level beats Georgiana they will win their next three setting the stage in four weeks verse Leroy.... On the other side... If Red Level loses against the Panthers they could very well be 0-9 going into their final against #6 1A McKenzie. Luverne 42, Red Level 6 Red Level fall to 0-5 with the loss to the Luverne Tigers 3-2. Red Level continues to struggle through the 2007 season after graduating 18 and adding injuries from this season and Coach Grimes is working through his most difficult season coaching. Red Level moves back into region play next week and still has a chance to make the post season. Last year the Straughn Tigers were 0-5, but won 3 of their next four to get into the playoffs. Work for future or for playoff hope? The Red Level Tigers are off to an unfamiliar start - a winless football season. At 0-4 the Tigers are staring at the possibility of the unthinkable.... Could the Tigers post the golden goose egg?
Add the history from last season when Straughn started 0-5. The 3a Tigers turned around getting 3 area wins and making it to the playoffs in 2006. Could the same happen for the 2A Tigers? -- Starting 0-5 is close to reality as the Tigers face 2A Luverne this Friday at home. Last season both teams were undefeated and a failed two point conversion ended the game. This year, Luverne is 2-2 and both need a win and some confidence. Red Level is nursing players with injuries as the coaching staff try to answer questions on how to get a win. The likely hood of turning around the year are slim, but if there is anyone who can play the odds, it's Coach Grimes. Georgiana (2-1), Bayside (1-2), Southern Choctaw (0-3) and Leroy (3-0) are the teams that stand between Red Level and the post season - (region record). If the Tigers win every game they are in - that could be one of the greatest turn around second halves in region 1 history. Realistically the Tigers could beat Bayside and Southern Choctaw and may get a break and beat Georgiana, but Leroy? The Tigers will need help from other teams as Georgiana, Excel and Keith must loss The good news is Red Level will have five of the next six games at home. The only away game will be Southern Choctaw and the Tigers should win that game. There's always next year, but there is still a lot of football to be played in 2007 - and anything can happen. Red Level defeats Florala JV The Red Level Tigers are building for the future with 19 freshman, many that play on Friday Nights for Coach Grimes varsity squad. Both head coaches watched their JV teams play Friday Night as the Tigers scored in the final three minutes to claim victory over the 1A Wildcats. Excel 44, Red Level 0 The wheels are officially off the bus as Red Level drops their 4th straight and moves to 0-3 in 2A region 1. Considered the toughest region by many in high school sports the Tigers still have #1 Leroy, Georgiana, Southern Choctaw and Bayside to play. Next week is Luverne and ending the season with #10 1A McKenzie. Blake Pate tried to keep the Tigers in the game with play on both sides, and Excel added 10 points late in the fourth quarter to win 44-0. Rough Start for Tigers
