The 2008 softball season got underway last Friday afternoon for
the Opp (0-1) Lady Bobcats in a tournament being held in
Andalusia. The Lady Bobcats would get county rival Straughn for
their first game.
The first inning would see Straughn score first after a walk and
a double with two outs to make the score 1-0 in favor of the
Lady Tigers with the Lady Bobcats coming to bat.
Leadoff hitter Joi Rhymes walked and then was caught stealing on
the very next pitch to end any Bobcat threat in the first. The
Lady Tigers struck again in the second inning as the leadoff
batter was hit by a pitch and then a key double with two outs
scored another run to put Straughn up 2-0 and two.
Both teams got runners on base in the third but neither could
push a run across keeping the score 2-0 entering the fourth
inning. With two outs in the top of the fourth and a running on
second base a costly Bobcat error on a sure inning ending pop up
to the outfield drove another Lady Tiger runner across putting
Straughn up 3-0.
Opp would respond in the bottom of the fourth on a Sierra Thorn
RBI triple that drove in 2 runs cutting the Lady Tiger lead to
one run at 3-2. Straughn went quietly in the fifth as the Lady
Bobcats looked to even the game in the bottom of the fifth as
Joi Rhymes lead off the inning with an infield single but was
caught stealing for the second time in the game ending the Lady
Bobcat threat and Straughn got the next two Opp hitters out to
hold on for one point win 3-2.
Due to the time limits of the tournament only five innings
were played in the game. Sierra Thorn lead the Lady Bobcats at
the plate going 1 for 2 at the plate with a huge triple and 2
RBIs. Andrea Edwards and Katelyn Mikel each went 1 for 1 with a
hit and a walk. Sidney Jones went the distance for Opp on the
mound going 5 innings giving up 3 runs, only 1 of which was
earned, 4 hits, with only 1 walk, and 3 strikeouts.
