The Straughn Tigers are a year away
from a dominate team that will be loaded with Juniors and Seniors in
the 2008 season - Although they are short on experience in the
senior ranks, the 2007 squad should improve over last
season's 3-8 team. If only the Drivers played
football - then Ryne Taylor could have two tight end receivers to
chose from as well.
Pre-season glance -
Tigers worked hard in the off season to help develop a team that is
stronger and faster than last year's 3-8 squad. Coach Taylor
knew going into the year last season the team would be slower than
his 2005 Tigers, but the team had a mental toughness that proved
strong going into the second half of the season. "We were
a better team athletically in 2005 - but last year players
were more committed to the program."
The summer workouts and the 7-on-7
program have helped the team adjust for the 2007 season - and
Straughn should be more competitive in most games this season -
exception being Pike County, TR Miller and Andalusia. |
Offense - Ryne Taylor is going into his third year as a started
and is just a junior. He looked extremely impressive during
the 7-on-7 games, but like most high school quarte rbacks
must improve on his looks. Taylor's ability to look off the
initial routes and connect on third options - could be critical to
the passing success against the speed of Abbeville and Pike County
in region play. Taylor should have a good season for the
Tigers and will have to make up for the loss of Justin Freeney.
Finding a replacement for center Jason Morgan
and someone to take pressure off of Taylor running the ball -
creating a balance that will keep opposing defenses honest.
|
| Defense -
Size may be an issue on defense, but the cover should perform well
in the secondary for a team that will only have a handful of seniors
- play will be dominated by juniors and sophomores. The
Tigers were able to shut out one team in 2006, but will need more
consistent play to create a smoother path to the post season.
Without the talent level and senior
depth - younger players will have to learn in games needing to play
fundamentally sound. Defense has to close the points for /
against ratio in must win games.
|
| Outlook -
Straughn's schedule isn't any easier than last season - probably
even more difficult. T.R. Miller is T.R. Miller, #1 ranked 3A
Pike County is seeking to repeat as State Champs, Abbeville looked
great in the spring and has exceptional talent coming in the fall and 2A Red Level, should be
the same dominate
team this season. The final four region games will again
determine the Tigers playoff fate, but it should be another happy
one. If Taylor continues to
mature and has support within the running attack it could be a
banner - statistical year. Straughn has to play fundamentally
sound on every play.
2007 Schedule
Projected
Losses - .Red Level, Pike County, T.R. Miller, Andalusia
Must win - Slocomb, Dale
County, Elba Abbeville -
Having to travel doesn't help - must contain quarterback - and
ball control
Geneva - Geneva should be 1-1 coming off a loss to Pike
County when they visit Straughn... the Tigers 0-2 - this could be
the key game for Straughn early in the season.
Headland - new coach - new attitude - plenty of talent -
final game could determine playoff picture
Region Projections
Pike County (10-0)
Abbeville (8-2)
Geneva (6-4)
Straughn (5-5) |
