Tigers season comes to end The 2007-2008 football season came to an end with an understanding the future is bright, but this year belongs to Andalusia as the 4A Bulldogs won 42-0 over Straughn. The Tigers were never able to sustained a drive in the first few series and fell behind early after an opening first-play fumble gave the Bulldogs the ball inside Tiger territory. The Bulldogs' Brent Shiver has performed well stepping into the quarterback position this season and drove Andalusia down the field running, passing and finally handing the ball off to Michael Berry for a five yard touchdown run. As most of the season goes - Gillis Jones came on to add the extra point putting Andalusia ahead to stay 7-0. The defense of Andalusia overpowered the Tigers and on Straughn's next series Chris Kelley sacked Ryne Taylor for a loss of ten putting the Tigers in a punting down. A good punt pushed the Bulldogs back into their side of the field, but a 22-yard run by Shiver and a pass to Ryan Godwin pushed the ball inside the 40 with 3:35 remaining in the first. Andalusia got their second score on a Brannon Bryan touchdown as the fullback plowed through followed by Jones kick adding the PAT at 1:17. The Tigers miscued at the start of the second quarter - fumbling back to Andalusia and within minutes Michael Berry provided his second touchdown of the evening. Jones kick made it 21-0 Andalusia. The #4 ranked Bulldogs again showed their power - defense. And on Straughn's next series was again forced to punt giving the Bulldogs the ball near mid-field. Another pass from Shiver, but this time to Corey Morris pushed the ball down to the 26-yard line and Morris took it on the ground to add another 14 yards to his total and Brannon Bryan matched Berry on the next play with a 12 yard touchdown. Jones was good and the Bulldogs had a 28-0 halftime lead. The second half added much of the same as the Tigers offense was unable to establish itself against the upper class Bulldogs. Andalusia added two more scores in the third and emptied the bench in the year's final regular season game. Gillis was good on both PATs and the Bulldogs ended their scoring at 42. The first score of the second half was a pass to James Hogg followed by a touchdown run from Kenneth Chambers. Both coaches were proud of their teams growth through the season and proud of their season's. Andalusia was just bigger and better this night, as Straughn ends their season 4-6 and looks to the future - graduating only 9 seniors and three large classes returning for next season. The Tigers did improve on wins this season and with the exception of Pike County and Andalusia - had opportunities through the season. Coach Taylor will have plenty to build on as the Tigers wait on reclassification for the 2008 season to establish goals and aspirations.
Straughn defeats Headland
The Tigers added to their victories with a 24-6 win over the Headland
Rams. The win moves the Tigers to 4-5 on the year and sets the
stage for next week's big
Although the ending was to "liking" - the game started slow on a cool evening. It could have been the full-moon, the cool air, or more likely - the homecoming atmosphere and celebratory spirit that kept both offenses from establishing momentum. It took 10 minutes, but the Tigers finally established a ground game as Bilyon Jones and Ross Parker begin picking up first downs and Ryan Taylor led Straughn to the 18. Jones took it the distance and with 11:36 remaining in the second - the homecoming crowd could begin to cheer any anxious moments from memory. Parker added a two-point conversion and the Tigers were ahead to stay 8-0.
The Tiger defense stepped up against the Headland (1-9, 1-6)
The half time entertainment of both Headland and Straughn enlightened both crowds. The Tigers almost started the 3rd quarter where the half ended as Biylon Jones stepped in front of a Rams pass and returned it to the 3-yard line. Ross Parker ran the "pig" in on the next play to give Straughn a 17-0 advantage. Ryan Taylor found Tyler Yelverton for a 57-yard touchdown to finish up the Tiger scoring and giving Straughn a 24-0 lead after the extra point was converted. The Rams finally got on the board with 8:38 left to conclude the scoring of Straughn's fourth win - 24-6.
Ryne Taylor finished the
night 8-18 with 122 yards passing, including a Tyler Ylverton pass for 57
yards.
Headland defeated Abbeville 34-33 to capture their only win last week falling to 1-8 on the year - 1-6 in region. The Rams finish the year hosting Houston County. Straughn improved to 4-5, 3-4 in region play. The Tigers are 3-1 at home - where they will host the 4A Andalusia Bulldogs (8-1, 7-0) next THURSDAY NIGHT.
Straughn knocked out
The Tigers have their last region game of the year this Friday against Headland. Followed by the last game of the year - hosting the Andalusia Bulldogs (7-1). Nothing would please the Tigers more than to win their last two games and in the process beat county rival Andalusia at home. Headland comes into Friday's game off their first win of the season over Abbeville 37-33, holding Abbeville on a two-point conversion try with :30 seconds remaining to preserve the win. The Rams had lost 7 straight including their season opener in Florala - falling to the Wildcats 6-13. Straughn will have to stop Juwan Williams in the backfield who had three touchdowns including a 35 yard run. Chipper Garrett added a 65 yard touchdown run and James Harris throw a touchdown from the halfback position. Slocomb Red Tops 45, Straughn Tigers 24 Big play were again the difference in a Tiger game, as Straughn struggled against the Slocomb Red Tops. Last week against 4A TR Miller the Tigers had three punts blocked - two returned for touchdowns. - Last night the Red Tops had two touchdown runs over 90 yards and both by Jermaine Williams. Straughn had Slocomb backed up to the two on one play and the three on another before Williams scored on runs of 98 and 97 yards. Remove those two big plays and the game is different as Straughn's Ryne Taylor throws for 303 yards (2 TDs) and runs in from 9 yards out to keep the Tigers in the game. CJ Christopher and Kyle Harp were recipients of the touchdown tosses. Straughn looks for answers battling 3A region 2 for playoff potential as the Tigers dropped a tough game on the road in Slocomb. The Tigers fall 45-24 and are 1-3 in the region. TR Miller 30, Straughn 12 The battle of Tigers was called a "very classy game and both teams played their hearts out", but in those games some one still has to win. TR Miller pulled one out after trailing to Straughn early 12-0. The Tigers scored 30 unanswered points to pull out the game and move to 3-2 on the season 2-1 in region play and prepares for next week against Thomasville. Straughn had an opportunity and Ryan Taylor had a good game as the 3A Tigers go back into region play with a chance to be the second or third seed. TR Miller turns around, prepares for Tigers The Straughn Tigers are coming off a 48-7 loss to Pike County while TR Miller improved to 2-2 over and 2-1 in 4A region 1 defeating Monroeville 35-6 last week. Straughn's loss to Pike dropped them to 1-2 in 3A region 2, but both losses have come against the two leading team in region play - setting up the Tigers for a playoff run in 3A. Miller, although 2-2 looks as good as the 4-0 team that defeated Straughn last year. Coach Jamie Riggs was proud of his teams performance last week against Monroeville in a game that should be really close. Riggs told Brewton Standard sports editor Adam Robinson "I feel OK with where we are right now - of course, everyone would like to be 4-0, but we are making some progress each week..... [and the key to second half] is how much we can improve each week". Riggs team will face another team that throws the ball a lot with junior quarterback Ryan Taylor at the helm. "He does a good job of scrambling and throws a lot on the run - he is very accurate" said Riggs. Miller was expected to be down in 2007, but has shown signs of improving after an opening season loss and a region loss to region surprise Escambia County. One key to Straughn winning will be to establishing a running game and using Miller's expectation of Straughn throwing the ball as a tool to victory. Riggs expects the Tigers to throw the ball 40 times during Friday nights contest and using other tools available to Taylor could give the 3A Tigers an advantage. The game should be close, but Miller has the home field edge. Game time is 7:00 PM in Brewton
No Surprise The Straughn Tigers hoped they could compete and come away from Brundidge a upset winner of Pike County, but that was not to be last Friday as the Bulldogs roll to 4-0 and 3-0 in the region. Straughn is off to a better start than last season and still has an opportunity to finish with five more wins and their hardest game will likely be Elba in week 8. The Panthers Getting a couple wins under their belt before 3A region powers allows Straughn to recapture the first half intensity.
Darrell Reynolds, Jonta Carlton, Quan Bryant, Blake Beacham and Josh Moultry all scored for the #1 Bulldogs as Pike County defeated the Straughn Tigers 48-7. The game was delayed for several hours for tornado activity and completed well after 10 PM. Straughn faces TR Miller next week and falls to 2-2 on the season. The Bulldogs move to 4-0 and should hold onto the #1 ranking.
Geneva 20, Straughn 15
Straughn went up first on a Jakim Fleton field goal, but the first half saw four different lead changes. The Tigers couldn't pull out another late come back after winning their previous two games in the fourth quarter. Straughn will take on the #1 Pike County Bulldogs next Friday. Straughn heading into "storm" Last season the Straughn Tigers got off to an 0-5 start having to face five teams that were headed into the playoffs and four that were at the top of their classification. This season the Tigers have a little more experience and a lot more confidence as they begin a flight into the "storm" of their schedule. Straughn opens region play After a big opening week win over Red Level, the Tigers turn their sites on region 2 play and the possibility of returning the playoffs for a tenth consecutive year. The Yellow Jackets lost their opening game to 2A Barbour County in the final 20 seconds on a 2 yard run by Calvin Fenn.
