Straughn shuts out Ashford

Tigers win to host first round playoff game

 (Saturday, October 23 - 7:00 AM)

After overcoming four first half fumbles the Straughn Tigers turned around their night and picked up a 21-0 shutout win over the yellow jackets to gain the second seed of 4A region 2.   It wasn't only the Tigers, but also Ashford that had a difficult time against the Straughn defense turning the ball over twice.

It took nearly two full quarters before either team crossed the endzone as Josh Dewrell "totted the tator" over from 7-yards out with :30 seconds left in the first half to give Straughn the lead and an eventual win as the defense recorded their first shutout of the season.

The Tigers scored on their first possession of the second half to take a 13-0 lead.  The drive was assisted by a roughing the kicker penalty on a 25-yard field goal attempt.  Zack Turvin connected on a 10-yard pass to Jacob Ganous for the score.

Turvin was on the receiving end of a two-point conversion on the Tigers next score culminating a 24-yard drive and a 1-yard touchdown by Dewrell.

Straughn plays Daleville (7-2; 5-2) next week to end their season and will host UMS Wright in week one of the playoffs on Nov 5.

Tigers' out claw Bobcats

(Sunday, Sept 26 - 9:00 PM)

The Straughn Tigers had lived through an off season of remembrance.  Although considered the turning point for the Tigers, last season's 7-20 loss to Opp headed the Tigers on a winning streak that continued through the third round of the AHSAA playoffs.  The Straughn players however remember the past year leading up to the Opp contest - that was then and this is now.

Straughn jumped out early after Josh Dewrell scored twice to push the Tigers up 14-0 with 4:15 remaining in the first, but the Bobcats' workhorse scored in less than two minutes to cut the Tigers' lead 14-6.

Tigers headed to Geneva

Straughn Tigers final preparations for 2010

The Straughn Tigers are moving into new ground this season as the 4A Tigers move up in classification from 3A, and according to numbers by the Alabama High School Athletic Association, are the largest school in Covington County. "It will be exciting for our fans and another challenge for our team," said head football coach Trent Taylor who is heading into his 21st year at the helm of the Tigers.

Straughn is coming off arguable their best season ever - finishing a game short of making the 3A Championship at Bryant-Denny (University of Alabama) last year with their hard 13-7 loss to Cordova in the third round AHSAA playoffs. Straughn did finish the 2000 season 11-2 falling to Greene County in week three of the 2A playoffs.

This year 20 seniors will anchor a team that many feel could put the Tigers back in the Championship hunt and give more meaning to their annual clash with cross-county rival Andalusia.

"I would love for the region title to come down to us and Straughn," said Andalusia's coach Seymore. The annual contest could have surpassed the Andalusia-Opp match-up as the biggest county game with the added pressure of play-off position as both will compete for the 4A Region 2 title.

"That's one game the coaching staff will have little problem getting the team motivated, but we've got six important games before Andalusia," said Taylor - who is quick to keep the team focused on their goals and accomplishing them one day and one game at a time.
